So of all the suicide bombers who have not walked away from a successful suicide bombing, he expects to be the only true muslim who ever did this and walk away unharmed? He must be one faithful boy.

If these recruiters are such faithful muslims, whey don't THEY try it out and see what happens?

If you all have not seen this movie, I'd highly recommend it:

Paradise Now (new window)

I'd be more inclined to regard a brainwashed 14-year-old as a victim than a villain. Of course, I'm sure that there's plenty of Internet Tough Guys here to tell me that when they were 14 no one could have ever persuaded them to do anything wrong. Then again, they'll have the advantage of being able to remember being 14 very, very clearly.

I'm right there with you. Kids are impressionable, but when they commit crimes they have to be reviewed case by case without a doubt. Painting people broadly with a single brush is never good. I despise the farkwits that set this kid up.

I may have done some stupid/illegal things when I was 14, (can't go into details, statute of limitations hasn't expired yet.) but I wouldn't have fallen for the "God won't let you die" trick. I would have at least demanded a demonstration from one of the recruiters.

The idea that this kid thought he'd survive a suicide attack doesn't come from the linked article. It's just a misunderstanding of the headline.

If all the trusted figures in your life conspired against your fourteen year old mind over an extended period, they could likely convince you of just about anything. It's a rare kid (most likely an ODD kid) that could withstand such pressures. If you're like me, your memories are extremely dusty.

You're probably even older than I am and I've mostly forgotten what the experience is like to feel so much pressure while being so vulnerable.

That's why they tell you never to accept a bag from a stranger at the airport... Or is that to prevent you from being "tricked" into being a drug mule? I can never remember..

Yes, he's a victim. Just like the 50 people on the bus that he would have blown up.
Those who trained him and sent him out to be a suicide are the villains.

However, 'conspiracy to commit murder...' is a crime.

So how does this play out. He serves 5 years in the detention facility, gets transferred to big boy prison, and is eventually let out? And then does what? My guess, blow himself up. Of course he regrets what he did and feels "tricked", because he got CAUGHT! I wasn't the brightest bulb at 14 but I'm sure strapping explosives to my chest and walking into a crows wasn't in the cards.

Of course they are victims being so young. But the questions come as to if and when they should be released because when individuals are brainwashed young - it is very, very difficult to "unbrainwash" them.

2009-01-02 03:06:20 PM
How do you train to be a suicide bomber? It sounds like a job anybody could do without any training at all, assuming you don't have to build the bomb yourself.
