Very cool. I was really hoping he'd win. After the collapse of the Giants down the stretch I didn't really see any other good options.

Unless they were going to give MVP to the collective O-line of the Giants, there is not a MVP-worthy player on that team.

Probably, but they could have given it to Eli. Lots of idiot sportswriters out there would think that would be ok.

Very true. With all the crap the Colts had to deal with this year, Peyton is a good choice.

well deserved Peyton.

nice to see that Warner got one vote ;-)

They've all but swapped out Peyton for Eli in the NY metro area - I don't think anyone's noticed.

As a niners fan, this pains me to say it, but I think there's a better than average chance that when all is said and done, Peyton will unofficially-officially go down as the greatest QB to have ever played.

I watched Marino and Elway in their primes. I watched Montana make those two look like high schoolers, then had the pleasure of watching Steve Young, himself a top-10 QB. But it's just becoming too hard to ignore what Peyton has done and is in the process of doing.

When he's done playing, he'll have 60,000 yards, 400+ TD passes, at least one SuperBowl, at least 3 MVP's, the 2nd highest career passer rating, 3rd highest completion %, and highest or 2nd highest yards per attempt. Not to mention that week in and week out he makes throws that most NFL QB's couldn't make even in a video game.

That's an awfully fine resume. It'll be hard for me to admit that there's a better QB out there than Montana, but Peyton may force me (and all of us) to do just that.

Peyton's the best QB in the league right now and has been for some time.

That being said...Peyton's play and stats are directly related to the health of his team. I know that sounds obvious, but people seem to think Peyton carries that team, he doesn't. The team carries him. When he loses his running game or a receiver, his stats go to shiat. He's got a lot of talent around him, no different than Brady or Cassell in NE.

/just sayin'.

Seems like the opposite. His best reciever took a huge step back this year and he still won MVP.

Um, Kerry Collins? He took a team expected to finish 3rd in its division to the league's best record. Manning took a team that should have competed for the league's best record to a wild card berth.

Or, maybe one of other four QB's with a higher rating that Manning?

Or, Adrian Peterson for single-handedly getting the Vikings to the playoffs.

Or, Ed Reed who had 8 picks in the last six games to get his team into the playoffs.

Manning is good, but he didn't deserve it this year.

After Peter King confirmed (new window) on Monday that Peyton Manning is apparently the farking highlander, it was going to be a travesty if he didn't win.

Not sure if this was serious, but isn't that like saying "If Detroit had scored more than their opponents, they'd have won".

It's like madden saying "If the ball crosses the goal line, they'll get a touchdown".

You make some good points, but he still needs to do more in the playoffs to go down as the best ever. Even with the Super Bowl win, he's only 7-7 in the playoffs and generally hasn't played all that well (21tds, 17ints).

He needs at least one more title to go to the very top of the list. I think Brady with 3 wins and 4 appearances is ahead of him at this point.

I'm surprised that Drew Brees didn't even get ONE vote. I know his team didn't make the playoffs so that pretty much rules him out but it pains me as a fan of football that he may get ZERO love after torching league defenses this year. The man threw for over 5k yards and he's not even a footnote. That is sad.

Collins is this year's version of Trent Dilfer. Take a team with an amazing defense and running game and don't fark it up. Hell, had Young kept playing, they probably still would have gone 10-6.

Passer rating says nothing about who is most valuable to their team.

Peterson fumbles too much, and has an awesome defense helping him out.

Ed Reed MIGHT not even be the best player on the Baltimore defense.

I would rather it go to Kurt Warner. Sure his team mailed it in after they made the playoffs, but he played very well when the games mattered and is doing something with his team that Manning does every year because the quality of Mannings team is so much better all around him.

I'm the first person to mention 2nd place finisher Chad Pennington? By any of the criteria stated for voting Manning, Chad Pennington was at least as valuable.

I loathe the Vikings and still think Adrian Peterson was far more deserving, but since they only give the MVP award to quarterbacks nearly every year, it comes as no surprise.

Manning's supporting cast is comparable to that of Warner's. Fitzgerald and Boldin are sick, their running games were both equally bad this year, and the defenses are comparable.

Warner also played terribly in games that mattered as well. Better pray he doesn't have to go to the east coast in the playoffs.

actually, one of the funnier ones was his fake United Way commercial (SNL?).

The fact that he comes off so serious all the time yet can poke fun at himself is why his commercials are enjoyable.

I think all pro sports should have a Most Valuable Player and a Best Player award. Its the best of both worlds. Have a guy who may not have had the best numbers but whose team would have folded without him? MVP. Have a guy who put up gaudy numbers for a crappy team? Best Player.

Except Miami actually has a running game, and one of their most effective offensive formations is fully dependent on Pennington staying the hell out of the way.

This is true. Also doing it with several decent, but middle of the pack receivers (with the exception of colston, but he missed a lot of time). I would have liked to see drew brees at least get mentioned, but definitely due to the lack of wins he was not mentioned.

Passer Rating is a measure of how well you pass the football. This does not directly translate to your overall value.

no, I'm being serious. I really think Drew Brees had an MVP year. The saints wouldn't have finished 8-8. By far, the NFC South was the most competitive division in football this year, and someone had to lose. Unfortunately, it was New Orleans. I think that if they strengthen their defense, the saints win divisions. 5,000 passing yards is unreal. he was 20 some odd yards away from breaking a 25 year old record. Brees is the real deal.

Now, if they can get some play from their defense and their running game steps up, he'll get mentioned.

He threw for 3600 yards out of the wildcat formation? Impressive. Why all this talk about Brees, then? Pennington must have finished with about 30,000 yards passing.

Peyton will go down as a greater all around QB (game management etc...), but no one has and possibly ever will be as good of a pure pocket passer as Dan Marino. The man could drop the ball on a dime from 60 yards away if he wanted to.

Miami lost both starting guards this year, which has seriously impacted their ability to run the ball. The reason the running game has found success is largely a result of their becoming a pass-first team over the latter half of the season with Chad Pennington throwing to such offensive stalwarts and All-Pros such as Greg Camarillo, Davone Bess and Ted Ginn. Wildcat shenanigans aside, the offense goes through Pennington, and he certainly means as much to Miami's success as Manning does.
