As a result of that report, federal officials made the decision to order all 104 passengers from the plane and re-screen them and their luggage

Is rescreening all the passengers an instinctive reaction like rebooting a computer if you think it's acting funny?

hyperspacemonkey: Anesthesiologist and lawyer, huh? Muslims have a higher rate of graduate degrees, professional degrees, and college degrees than atheists or Christians (in Canada anyhow). Significantly higher than the national education levels in fact. Islam makes science and other learning a religious necessity. It is basically the most scientific religion in the world, with the Prophet M and other scriptures praising learning, science and the study of nature, logic and math.

I wonder if their educated culture has anything to do with their persecution? The lower the level of education, the more prejudices appear (according to studies). Muslims are separated not only by religion but by learning. The culture they mix with is the educated, usually. No doubt that must account for some of the misconceptions and distrust they have to deal with every day on this continent.

Yes, because if there is a bastion of science and learning anywhere in the world it is the Islamic world. Just look at the high-tech utopias of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Jordan, Egypt, and all the others.
This is why the best and brightest from Europe and the US have been flocking to their universities and colleges for decades.

Travelling by any means in the U.S. these days carries the risk of exposure to all sorts of idiots and slow-witted authorities, but air travel is surely the worst option of all if you look even vaguely foreign. (An Irish guy I know is especially big and swarthy, and always gets pulled out of line - 'randomly' of course. Randomly always.) Amtrak is an entirely federal transit authority, but they're a lot less paranoid, stupid, arrogant, and abusive than TSA and failing airlines. I ride all the time. Perfect? No, of course not. But so much better than flying.

Flying only makes sense nowadays if you're trying to get somewhere in a hurry. And only if it's a good distance. A lawyer I used to work with was a former Washington lobbyist who worked in energy and travel and had collected many interesting facts about such things (some of which were a little unsettling). He told me that taking into consideration all the other activities related directly to flying, on both ends, the net travel time point to point for a typical U.S. airliner was around 65 mph for any distance under 500 miles. Meaning that you make about the same time driving, busing, or taking a train, unless you travel more than that.

You, the passenger who reported them, and the pilot are all equally wrong. And by "wrong", I mean a lot of things which I can't say without getting a moderator angry with me. Cowardly, contemptible, and stupid don't even begin to cover it.

I will need citation for that one, but I will say that, at least in Canada, muslims will remain muslims in university because they want to remain close to their culture, or they couldn't make friends other than the Society of Islam ____Chapter.

/Do it by nationality, and the Chinese and Indians would dominate. At least in Engineering, Comp. Sci and Medical. And here we have a perfect example of a person jumping to conclusions. Because I posted a reason why people are paranoid, you automatically assume I think it was perfectly ok to toss the family off of the plane. In reality, I don't think it was right to toss them off. What you fail to grasp is some people, such as myself, try to understand what motivates people. When you understand why they do something, it makes it easier to rectify problems.

Now go back to school and try to learn something useful.

I've never taken Amtrak but I have checked their prices several times and I would primarily attribute their low popularity to their ridiculously high prices. When the price of a train ticket is the same as an airplane ticket, nobody is going to take the train, especially when its much slower. I'm pulling these figures out of my ass, but for me at least, train tickets would have to be at least a quarter the cost of a plane ticket before it would be worth it.

On the original subject, my female friend who is Indian gets searched every time she goes through security. Randomly. And if you Americans think you've got it bad, you should see the racism in places like Hong Kong airport.

AirForceVet: Next time I fly out from some Southeaster airport like Atlanta, if any white person makes any comment about engines, I'm reporting it as a suspicious remark made by white supremacist terrorists.
Good idea! See how far that gets you ... most likely it will land you on the TSA's no-fly list.

Procedural Texture: Talk about the weather or quantum physics or porn or sports. Have the conversation about security after you land. Same reason you save your bomb jokes for later. Same reason you don't yell fire in a crowded theatre.
Is that reason a hatred of free speech?
On the one hand, we as Americans have the right to free speech.
On the other hand, the airline owns the airline and you are a customer under their rules.
On the gripping hand, however, the airlines get federal bailouts and have federally supplied security in the form of the TSA and air marshals, so how about some free speech, RKBA, and all the other rights we are entitled to as citizens?

On a completely unrelated note, I preferred my headline on this one ... first time I haven't recognized the superiority of the winning headline as compared to mine.

I agree with Spatty. Is it really too much to ask for, for everyone to get a barcode tattoo that links them to a database of records? Why not just ban clothes and all bags in airports as well? Heck, why don't we just turn airliners into jails in the sky to make sure that no funny business can happen.

Yeah, you would never be a good businessman spatty. thats the problem with this country right now, old people and there old ways. they are so out of touch with the generation Rx.

2009-01-02 06:44:38 AM
Soon after 9/11 I was taking a domestic flight from NYC to Atlanta and the guy waiting in front of me at security was a tall light-skinned black guy wearing a skull cap. We kind of looked at each other and I said, "You're so going to get searched, but you probably know that right?" He laughed in agreement. Ah, good times.

I know many people who are taking holidays in Canada instead of the US because of security hassles. My SO is Swiss and he has to get a new $300 biometric passport or get a visa, for which they wanted loads of personal information and personal recommendations. Personal Recommendations! I couldn't believe it. It's like applying to college. And this is just for a tourist visa. The good thing about the economic crisis is that the US is finally opening up again to foreign students and tourists. Get over yourselves.

TFA: "the passengers said AirTran refused to rebook them, and they had to pay for seats on another carrier secured with help from the FBI."

That was completely wrong as well. What excuse could Airtran have for refusing to rebook these people? Did Airtran refuse to rebook the passengers who made the complaint and caused so much delay and stupidity?
Further, Airtran should have at least covered whatever extra costs they may have incurred when forced to rebook on another airline. Simply refunding the cost of their original tickets is a completely jerky thing to do.

Last time I flew to Europe (post 9/11), I missed my flight. The airline I originally booked with got me on another flight with a different airline, and I flew out within an hour. No added expense, no hassling me. Didn't even comment that I was at fault for missing my own flight. I had planned on just sitting in the airport or even going home again depending on when they had their next scheduled flight to London. I wished I'd taken more care to remember which airline it was, especially given the bad experiences I have since with both Airtran and Delta.

while admiring that you are total fark, (i can't seem to get there). I think your comment on this story is inflammatory and out of line. If you have flown commercially in the past 8 years or so, you have seen the signs that say ANY comment, no matter how trivial or incredible WILL be taken seriously if it has anything to do with the security of a passenger jetliner. This does not seem to me to be about racial profiling, but in fact seems to me to be a really stupid ass comment made by a smirking teenager, with the result of inconvienence and imposition on everyone.

Fark them--- there are some things you simply DO NOT say on an airplane. And if you want to turn that into a racial card playing incident, then, you sir, are a troll.
