It is almost like they know they are abusing their bureaucratic power... how shocking.

Umm, did you miss the part where they tried to call on a Sunday? I think most people, even city councils, have the day off.

"It was just a few years ago that 16-foot-tall Snowzilla arose in a residential yard in Airport Heights, launching an annual procession of local gawkers and an international media blitz.

Camera crews came from Russia and Japan."

Okay, 16 foot is a big ass snowman but it's hardly big enough for people to visit from other countries. Even weird Japanese people couldn't be that impressed by it.

2008-12-22 01:22:58 PM
Bondidude: Build one of these instead. See what the neighbors think of that.

That's the first thing I thought of. I would make a huge House of Snowman Horrors with every one of Calvin's strips as a model. No safety issue to abate and a great screw you to the humorless neighbors

/Missing Calvin and Hobbes.

Code enforcement officers don't take action until they get complaints. The neighbors were tired of all the traffic. If you don't like the consequences of living within close proximity to people, move out of town.

Oh great, everybody is just worrying about their precious little snowflakes.

2008-12-22 01:44:47 PM
HabitOne: Sounds like the only reason the snowman came down is that the neighbors got tired of living next to a tourist trap.

It's a small town in Alaska. I really can't imagine, beyond photogs now and then, and a one time drive by by each resident of the town (which must be what, a couple hundred?) that there is really THAT MUCH traffic. Sounds like biatchy farkin' neighbors if you ask me.

/mine have tried to tell me not to turn around in their driveway
//fark them
///I lived in the neighborhood first

You can't be serious...there are 350,000 people in the MSA of Anchorage. Maybe you aren't, perhaps I've been trolled.

EvilAvatar: So, if that snowman is too big (or exceeds the legal volume and/or mass that has been determined by the city council), does that now mean that there is a set standard of just how large a snowman can be?

Codes don't get that specific, it isn't feasible to write in every possible structure and it's dimensions into an ordinance book.

Is building too big of a snowman a crime now?

If the neighbors complain, and there is a code violation than yes it is.

What happened to private property? 1st amendment rights etc.?

The more neighbors you have, and the closer they live to your property, the fewer rights you have. There is a saying...can't remember where it originated, but it is something like "the right for you to throw a punch ends where the other man's nose begins." What this man had on his property was impacting the property of others.

Why is traffic on a public thoroughfare controlled by a seemingly minority opinion of residents, instead of majority?

It doesn't affect the majority, and the majority doesn't care.

Can city councils just make any law they want no matter how strange - do they really have that much power?

Generally not, but it is more likely if the population is passive. It can take just one person to stop a law from passing. But it's more there are other checks and balances...the municipal legal departments can put an to a code, or reduce it's enforcement priority. I doubt a legal department would want their desks piled up with snowman violations. Also, code violations are open to interpretation. However, a municipal judge is the person that makes the final decision.

So why not just build 50 8 foot snow men instead.

Lots of kids build 8 footers.

What are they going to do, outlaw snow mne period?

Explain that one to the kids.

Im thinking I would mention to the paper that im looking for a civil engineer to design a structurally sound temporary snow structure for my yard.....Oh wait that would be an Igloo.

So i guess the city is after all them pesky Inuits too because they keep building dangerous snow structures?

Last year when leaving Las Vegas to Seattle, I had the pleasure of sitting with an incredibly hot girl and some hippy looking loser guy from Anchorage... well, he lived his whole lift there, and she was originally from New York... but my gawd she was hot.

I brought up Snowzilla in conversation, in which she said that he pretty much brings the neighborhood to a crawl, and is a big nuisance in the end.

Therefore, if that incredibly hawt chick thinks the snowman is a nuisance, I too think it is a nuisance.

\Gonna go fap for a bit.

2008-12-22 04:57:20 PM
toonz: the townsfolk should just start running around building big-ass snowmen everywhere.

This would fix the problem nicely. And teach the retards a good lesson. I remember when this was still America.

jicon: I brought up Snowzilla in conversation, in which she said that he pretty much brings the neighborhood to a crawl, and is a big nuisance in the end.

OTOH, I can see this also.

There's a big house that for the last few years always covered their house in lights for Christmas. It would always make traffic slow to crawl as people would slow down to gawk, and pedestrians darting out from behind cars in the dark wasn't helping either.

So glad they didn't do it this year.
