Weaver95: spickus: FightDirector: the tanks would have looked full, but actually could have had 20% or less of a full fuel load - the rest being water.

That sounds like an awful lot, are you sure?

that's a worst case scenario, but yeah - it can get bad if condensation buildup happens in your tanks.

So if the aircraft had 40 gallon tanks, 8 gallons of water could condense in one day? How humid is it there?

Oh, no offense taken. Just a bit of CYA there. I really don't have any idea if the temperature shift was enough to condense that much - but it's certainly something to think about. Ideally before jumping on the "OMFG Bush had him killed" bandwagon. There'll be plenty of room on there once we've exhausted the mundane possibilities like rational people.

THEN we start rioting.

Can't help you about the de-icers, but this might help regarding the first part of your question:

FightDirector: ...If he just checked the fuel levels, instead of explicitly looking for water mixed in with the fuel (which is evidently not an uncommon step to skip during preflight), the tanks would have looked full, but actually could have had 20% or less of a full fuel load - the rest being water.

2008-12-21 04:25:30 PM
FightDirector: Just talked to my dad about this (private pilot with about 3000 flight hours), and his take was that it does look suspicious (insofar as he attempted to enter the Witness Protection Program and was denied, and with the downchecking of previous flights in a short timespan).

However, it's "entirely likely" that he simply didn't check for condensation inside the tanks during his preflight - the abrupt temperature shifts recently are precisely the type of situation in which water will build up in the tanks. If he just checked the fuel levels, instead of explicitly looking for water mixed in with the fuel (which is evidently not an uncommon step to skip during preflight), the tanks would have looked full, but actually could have had 20% or less of a full fuel load - the rest being water.

There's a WHOLE LOT of "suspicious circumstances" about it, and the timing doesn't help. But there very definitely is an explanation that doesn't involve a murderous government. Well, more murderous than normal anyway. I'm NOT SAYING that Rove/Cheney/Bush didn't have him killed. But without more information, there's certainly reasonable doubt. Coincidence isn't proof.

How about this, the "fact" that he tried to enter the Witness Protection Program and the near calls with flying were completely made up by VR. The same VR that shares its journalism philosophy with the National Enquirer. Screw facts and sources, just write the story.

I was a com/nav tech in the Marine Corps Core, I recall the plane captains taking fuel samples from ports low in the wings quite often. I wonder if there is something similar in civil aviation?

Accusations are made. Now, we look for evidence and explore the possibility that the accusations are true with an open mind. You know, like rational people.

Depends on how effective the seal is on his fuel tank, weather conditions, temperature inside the tank itself, blah blah. you're always going to have some level of condensation which is why you're supposed to take fuel samples to see what conditions are like in the tank.

Fuel sample duty was one of my least favorte jobs too. no matter how careful you are, you always get some fuel dumped on your head. Do that for a squadron of planes and you end up stinking of fuel for the rest of your shift.

Do we have any kind of solid news about this? Y'know, like Time or Newsweek or Reuters or something? I've been following this story as best I could but so far I haven't seen any news sources so much as covering a plane crashing, let alone all of this other info. Maybe it's real and anything from reliable news sources is lost in blog spam.

No, so far all we have is (a) Wacko blogs crying "Conspiracy!!!", and (b)apparently knowledgeable pilots who have read the weather reports and say that it was almost certainly icing that caused the problem and (c) libs who say there is absolutely no parallel with the 50 people with close Clinton connections who died in mysterious circumstances.

BTW, nothing Hitler ever did was conspiratory. Everything was absolutely on the level, and he never resorted to underground and secretive things to hold onto power. King Herod was the same, and also all the Roman Emperors or European kings. ANYONE who says otherwise is in need of a tin foil hat. Al Capone was a saint by the way.

There are plenty of Democrats who love to " help " him out while making his situation very public and therefore making it much harder for the so-called bad guys to touch him.

hahahaahahhahahah. you think the pelosi/reid/schumer are leftists who have the balls to contradict the bush admin with anything heavier than a sternly worded letter.

i'd call rove and tell him to go fark himself and that i'm going to put him in jail with my testimony - if i could hang out off the grid until he's out of power AND know that my testimony would be used to put him in jail later. but i would NEVER call any of the congressional dem leadership for help or support. that's just retarded. they're pussies. that's why congressional approval ratings are so low. most of america hoped that someone might be held accountable for shiat like katrina, but they just don't have the cojones to do it. individual congress-critters are fine, but the leadership - dem or rep - over the last 20 years has been pathetic.

Then again, naming your organisation the "Velvet Revolution" is more inclined to inspire giggles rather than serious thought.

Well, there are plenty of experienced pilots buried all over the place. The thing is, investigation after investigation shows that "they thought they could make it". *IF* it was icing, he may have thought he could beat the weather to his destination.

"Flying" magazine used to have a feature called "I learned About Fling From That", in which pilots would recall how they had almost gotten themselves splattered on a mountain/tree/airfield. It makes for chilling reading. So do the NTSB reports. It is usually a chain of events. The ones that live to tell about it somehow break the chain.

Every time I go and get faith in the american people, I come here and lose it instantly.

Anybody who trusts and believes what the government says is an idiot, never has a single government kept the interests of the people when the people lose interest in the government. We need to watch, investigate, call to trial, and scrutinize every aspect of government till nothing is left unturned. And then do it again just to catch the liars.

If this guy was assassinated we need an investigation, even if we lightly suspect he was, even if we have a slight hunch he was, it needs to be investigated. If politicians get away with killing one citizen without being called to the carpet, they can kill many citizens without hesitation.

Politicians need to be put face trial, guilty politicians need to face firing squads.

A man paying attention to the situation might note that a named source - one Michael Connell - just died under unfortunate circumstances that easily lend themselves to the idea that he was killed because he was a named source.

If that's what named sources have to look forward to, you're going to be seeing a LOT more unnamed sources in the future.
