I've already downloaded the pre-release tapestry.

2008-12-20 06:47:45 PM
I saw the tapestry in Bayeaux. All these movies are sure to ruin the wonderfulness of that graphic experience.

2008-12-20 06:49:38 PM
I've waited my whole life to hear "The Normans are coming" uttered on Film

I hope that line makes the cut

Then what the hell was Lord of the Rings about?

2008-12-20 07:19:47 PM
I do believe Harold's been "Godwinsoned" by subby.

2008-12-20 07:42:04 PM
Marklanders for the win!

oldebayer: I saw the tapestry in Bayeaux. All these movies are sure to ruin the wonderfulness of that graphic experience.

Read a book on the history of the tapestry (which goes from when it was presumably made until present-day).

Did you know that Napoleonic soldiers came within minutes of cutting it up to make a cover for an artillery wagon?

Ah, here it is: The Bayeux Tapestry: The Life Story of a Masterpiece by Carola Hicks

Err, "I read a book..." didn't mean that to sound so imperative!

I'm a big fan of LOL Bayeux

A priest snatched it from them and hid it in his home for thirty years, according to my sources.

/Was trying to troll in the manner of those who insist their most precious graphic novels are sure to be ruined as movies, but my troll-fu is weak.

2008-12-20 08:34:16 PM
Well, thanks for spoiling the ending, subby. Now I don't have to see any of the movies.

2008-12-20 08:56:31 PM
Will they make the battle of Stamford Bridge a prequel? Will there be steamy scenes of William's illegitimate birthing? Will Orlando Bloom fire the fatal arrow?

To be honest, it may be one of the most influential years in human history.

I came here to say this.

Heard that a few days ago on Jeopardy.

William the Bastard lay down on the sands of Cornwall and swallowed a mouthful of sand as a symbolic gesture of conquest. Three days later, well, you know the rest.

France surrenders!

Oh, wait...

2008-12-20 10:46:32 PM
But no movie for the Battle of Stamford Bridge?

Bah. No respect for the Norsemen. (Besides the Normans)

2008-12-20 10:50:05 PM
I hear one of them stars Samuel L Jackson as King Harold...

2008-12-20 10:50:29 PM
Wow. That's weird; I was reading a book on the Norman Invasion last night, and thought, "Hm I wonder why there are no movies about this?"

2008-12-20 10:51:31 PM
2wolves: Marklanders for the win!

I'm a former Marklander, so I'm really getting a kick out of your reply.

I laughed, subby.

I wonder if subby knew about the arrow in the eye before this article.

Also, did it make for a highbrow headline? That tidbit seems to be less that common.

2008-12-20 10:55:02 PM
I am very excited, this is definitely a time period I'd love to see brought to life.

The line in the article that stated "Well in Hollywood terms this would be a buddy story" just told me that all three will probably bastardize the history to a point of nausea. I have hopes though.

Nor should they get any. Stamford Bridge was a fluke and a massacre. The Norsemen left their armour on their boats! Dumbasses.

So you know what I was thinking? Why hasn't anyone done an adaptation of Ivanhoe? I mean, it's a great book, and it's got Robin Hood, so at least it has a recognisable character but it's not a Robin Hood heavy tale. I think it has potential.

They made one. 1952 or 1953 (can't recall offhand), with Robert and Elizabeth Taylor. Quite a good movie, actually.

And I'm glad that there's a full three movies coming out about this. That means there's a decent chance that one of them will be good.

/also, well played, subby. Well played.

From wiki:

" The section depicting the death of Harold can be interpreted in different ways, as the name "Harold" appears above a lengthy death scene, making it difficult to identify which character is Harold. It is traditional that Harold is the figure with the arrow in his eye, But he could also be the figure just before with a spear through his chest, the character just after with his legs hacked off, or could indeed have suffered all three fates or none of them."
