Next time you see a hippo, let this thought cross your mind:

In the wild, alligators and crocodiles give hippos a wide berth. Hippos are also responsible for more human deaths in africa than tigers. They're nasty animals.

I don't care if it's pink, I want one for Christmas.

This many times over. Had an anthro professor that would tell us of the time that he was in Africa and had to wait until hippo mating season was over before some of the local villagers would take them to the village across the river. He figured that it was wiser to listen to them and did just so since the roads were non-existent and not the best place for an American to be traveling on his own.

That makes perfect sense, since there are no tigers in Africa.

It's like zee story of zee heeppo: Zee heeppopotamoose, he is not born saying, "Cool beans. I am a heeppo." No way, Joesay. So he try to paint zee stripe on him to be like zee zebra, but he fool no one. Then he try to put zee spot on zee skin to be like the leopahrd, but everyboody know he is a heeppo. So, at certain point, he look himself in zee mirror and he just say, "Hey. I am a heeppopotamoose and zere is nothing I can do about it." As soon as he accepts zis, he live life happy. Happy as a heeppo. You understand zis, Luban?

from this article (new window)

"The poachers are believed to be veterans of Congolese bush wars and former Hutu rebels who fled to eastern Congo in 1994 after killing Tutsis in the genocide in neighboring Rwanda. They hunt because they are hungry, but also for profit - the meat, though tough, is a pricey delicacy and a three-ton hippo fetches thousands of dollars in village markets across northeastern Congo.

I know that a hippo's sweat is called "blood sweat" because of its dark reddish color, wonder if that has something to do with it?

2008-12-19 01:48:13 AM
To mark territory, hippos spin their tails while defecating to distribute their excrement over the greatest possible area.

FTA:
One onlooker told the Austrian Times: "He looks very pretty but that colour might not help him much when he gets around to breeding. He doesn't look very manly."

Yeah, because hippos associate pink with femininity, you anthropomorphizing retard. Now for all I know, color is selected for when choosing mates, but for them to assume it makes the hippo less manly is stupid.

Coincidentally, Africa has no tigers.

I remember seeing on a Nature episode that hippos have glands in their skin that, when needed, naturally excrete a pink substance that works as a sunscreen.
