That headline would have been so much more enjoyable if the word "stalker" was removed.

2008-12-17 01:09:06 PM
Hopefully she will learn the history of psychiatry there.

I wonder if he would have a problem with them medicating her?

Maybe this stalker can hang out with the Jennifer Garner Stalker monk guy

Not ironic.

Anyone who can't get enough coverage of Tom Cruise should probably seek psychiatric help...

2008-12-17 01:34:17 PM
I say let him loose, why would Tom have cause to be nervous he can just cure him with his "Magic Powers".

2008-12-17 01:35:24 PM
That stalker needs a touch assist. Come on, Tom!

Should we even have an ironic tag on Fark?

2008-12-17 01:40:37 PM
Probably not ironic, but very funny and excellent use of the irony tag. I can just imagine bender singing "now THAT's irony!!!"

NathanielTaggart: Not ironic.

It would be REALLY ironic if Tom Cruise was the one that decided he had to get psychiatric care.

I still think it's ironic, but maybe not by your strict definition. Nonetheless, let me get you a badge...

Not 100% ironic. But still, the tag is reasonably deserved.

Bravo.

Technicalities and language police be damned. Best use of Ironic tag since the Alanis link, subby.

Actually watching a Tom Cruise movie as we speak. Am I gonna die?

FriarReb98: Actually watching a Tom Cruise movie as we speak. Am I gonna die?

Yes, but for completely unrelated reasons.

2008-12-17 01:56:49 PM
Is she being sent to a psychiatric hospital because she's a stalker, or because she has the bad taste to stalk Tom Cruise?

2008-12-17 01:57:23 PM
Car_Ramrod: Yes, but for completely unrelated reasons.

It's actually not that bad of a movie if you're into the subject matter at all....

TastyEloi: Is she being sent to a psychiatric hospital because she's a stalker, or because she has the bad taste to stalk Tom Cruise?

Aren't BOTH of those reasons good enough?

probably infected with Thetans, just have them purged.

Can't spell THETAN without:
"Tom CruisE psycHiatric hospitAl treaTmeNt"

Magical powers? No.

He could cure the stalker by having them hold his metal rods.

Completely unrelated but I was just thinking how funny the phrase "I worship Thetan" is... and it makes you sound like you have some kind of gay lisp and are actually saying "I worship Satan" to boot!

2008-12-17 02:32:42 PM
It's close enought that it makes my head hurt trying to decide if it is or isn't ironic. Maybe I should see somebody about that.

2008-12-17 02:34:11 PM
what would be Awesome... Cruise intervenes... attempts to use the Ronbottian "touch therapy" or whatever false bullshiat to "cure" his stalker... which of course fails and she kills him...

Where is your Hubbard now?

2008-12-17 02:37:10 PM
I would be willing to accept that it is irony if someone could describe what happened here that is contrary to expectations. Either that or please describe which definition of ironic you'd like to squeeze this one into.

NathanielTaggart: Not ironic.

irony n., pl. -nies.

1.
1. The use of words to express something different from and often opposite to their literal meaning.
2. An expression or utterance marked by a deliberate contrast between apparent and intended meaning.
3. A literary style employing such contrasts for humorous or rhetorical effect. See synonyms at wit1.
2.
1. Incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs: "Hyde noted the irony of Ireland's copying the nation she most hated" (Richard Kain).
2. An occurrence, result, or circumstance notable for such incongruity. See Usage Note at ironic.
3. Dramatic irony.
4. Socratic irony.

It is ironic because Cruise is an advocate of Scientology which rejects the modern practices of psychology. Because of this the humor of the situation is that the stalker of a famous Scientologist is sent to a psychiatric hospital instead of when most would jokingly expect the stalker to be forced to take some Scientology classes to handle their mental issues.

/kind of sucks the humor out if it when I explain it.

If Tom had anthing at all to do with the "sentencing" of the stalker this would truly be ironic on exactly the grounds you stated. However, he didn't. Ergo...

wildsnowllama -

It's still not technically ironic for that reason AFAIK, according to the definition you listed in bold. It would be ironic, I suppose, if the stalker was in fact taken to a Scientology treatment center. That would be quite unexpected, wouldn't it?

At present, it's just a funny coincidence. Again, there's no incongruity between what happened (stalker sent to psychiatric hospital) and what we'd expect (stalker sent to psychiatric hospital). It's just funny because of the coincidence that the "stalkee," Tom Cruise, detests psychiatry. I could be wrong (this stuff tricks me, too), but I don't see this as anything more than humorous coincidence.

No, I disagree. I believe it can be ironic. As I stated in my original post, the situation itself can be viewed in a humorous way by making some abstract connections. He may not have sentenced the stalker to the psychiatric hospital, but Tom hasn't denounced the action either.
And it has been stated above that it may not be a full blown irony but the components are there for the purposes of humor, in this situation I believe that I can safely call this "irony" while still fitting within the context of the true definition and not just calling something that is a coincidence "ironic" as many improperly do.

/I can also believe in the Tooth Fairy and Santa Clause on an internet forum until I'm blue in the fa... fingers...

Well, we can say it is ironic if we can say the statement...

"I fully expect where law enforcement and Scientology collide for activities to occur according to Scientology standard operating procedures."

If this is your expectation, then indeed this was an ironic happening. I can totally accept that different people will have different expectations and therefore different ideas about what is irony.

Do you have any junior agent badges? I too would like to complain about the non irony and I want to make it official.

Oh c'mon, give it credit for being sort of ironic on multiple levels. The other bit of incongruity here is that Tom Cruise is the one most deserving of being sent off to a psychiatric hospital, but out of the two named individuals in the headline, he's not the one going!

Tom Cruise is Tom Cruise crazy
Just be glad it's him not you
If you had Tom Cruise's troubles
You might be Tom Cruise crazy too
You'd flash your big white shiny smile
You'd buy expensive shoes
But you'd be the only man on Earth
Who couldn't enjoy Tom Cruise
Oh no, you couldn't enjoy Tom Cruise

Well played, Subby, well played.

Nice understated irony in headline.

Apparently the Ironic tag nearly gave it away.

Seriously, thetan is such a great and fanciful word. Too bad it has been used to further advance the powers of evil cults, rather than as a great sci-fi concept!
