"The Blair House, the President's guest house for visiting dignitaries, is available to President-elect Obama and his family starting January 15, as is historically the case," said Sally McDonough, spokeswoman for First Lady Laura Bush.

So basically they are letting him come five days before his inauguration, but not even earlier? So what? He has a place in Washington already, he is a Senator. It is not like they cannot find a place to stay for a week while his kids start school. It is not like he will be packing the truck and moving his furniture himself.

Okay, you Obama fans out there, let me aid you in being informed before you start freaking out. The tradition is for President-elects to move into the Blair House five days before their inauguration, which is January 15. This tradition is not being changed. The Obamas were "exploring" (in other words asking Mrs. Bush) what she thought of the idea of moving into the Blair House earlier in the month because of their kid's school commitments. But, as you'd expect, the Bushes have a number of functions already booked for the Blair House due to it being the end of their administration. This isn't a sleight in the slightest.

Now you may feel free to proceed with your Bush-bashing. But it may feel a wee bit hollow. Sorry. Heh.

i don't see one piece of controversy here. obama's not complaining about it. the hotel seems to have handled it courteously. why is this a (greenlit) story?

The Obama transition spokesperson emphasized the White House has been "extremely accommodating" to the Obama family, adding that the entire process has been "smooth and friendly."

When Obama was a Senator, where did he stay when he was in DC?

DarthBrooks: When Obama was a Senator, where did he stay when he was in DC?

He had an apartment so disreputable and filthy that Michelle wouldn't spend the night there. Once he got secret service protection, they made him move to more easily defendable digs.

My guess is the trollbait headline.

You know what's funny? The banner ads that are going towards Drew's book all hinge upon the idea that the media is generating fear, presumably to drive readership.

They need a new one. How about: "People in power are DESTROYING all you hold dear."

In short, screw you subby, and doubly so for the idiot who greenlighted this. You're both part of the problem.

Stupid headline and nonexistent controversy. At least all the posters so far have realized that. Kudos to everyone except subby and whoever greenlit this.

Trollbait headline is failing miserably so far. The first guy who shows up and pulls the race card on this one is going to look pretty silly.

Wow, so they get the same guaranteed five days before inauguration as other Presidents-elect, but nothing more? That's waisis!

Thanks Darconix!

Bush is the worst president in living memory.

How's that?

2008-12-12 01:02:45 PM
How does this 'Blair House' traditionally booked for the president elect get booked to the point where the president elect himself is unable to get a room?

I'm sorry but who's managing this house? And whatever happened to holding several rooms for the obvious? What happened to seizing a room for the sake of national security?

But then again, I've seen Bush Jr. do some sleazier things in his crappy life, so I wouldn't put it beneath him or his librarian wife to do such a thing.

Maybe for the comments, they're the best part of the link. For example:

Rebekah December 12th, 2008 11:03 am ET

oh horrors, poor Obama actually has to follow protocol about something!!!!!! and Laverne, he ain't POTUS yet!
Since he didn't have to follow other rules such as being a citizen of the US to run for pres and promoting and accepting voter fraud (ACORN), it is shocking that someone would actually enforce any rules on him.

That's some quality stupid right there.

Only a Month left, you figure Bush would be using up his vacation time

Bush needs time to move Bin Laden's family out

Bush keeps his rubber ducky collection in there.

Why would he let Obama in early, he has another month to protect us from evil doers and can't be disturbed by secret Muslims without oil...

Eh, not bad. Let's see if anyone bites.

What I don't understand is how the previously schedule guests couldn't be displaced for the next leader of the free world. I bet if they just asked whoever was staying there they'd be more than happy to stay somewhere else. It just feels like it went down like this:

"Hey man can we move in a little early?"
Not even looking at the guest list, "Nope, sorry, all booked up."
"You sure? You didn't even check."
"I said we're booked!"

Or whatever the polite Washington way of doing the same thing.

I don't think it's a race issue. It looks more like a laziness issue on the part of the Blair House people.

2008-12-12 01:07:08 PM
Ok, I can't wait for Obama to become president too but come on. This is not news nor is it a snub. It's the president's guest house. The current president is still... president. God forbid he use his guest house as such until the day that the president elect traditionally moves to it. Oh noes, Obama can't move in EARLY! :-O!

Can we take off our tinfoil hats and think that possibly had John McCain been elected he too would not have been able to move in to the guest house early because the current president had made the silly assumption that his guest house remained his guest house until he was gone.

I'm thinkin Obama owes Bush a thank you for allowing him to move in the traditional 5 days early, before his inauguration. Just because other presidents did it doesnt mean it's some sort of rule or law now, he's still bein nice.

/god i feel dirty for calling Bush nice. look what you people made me do
