No reason to; we're aware of the crash, nothing incriminating about them, nothing secret.

This is totally fake. Everybody knows that when an airplane crashes into a building, there's no pieces big enough to be recognized after the wreck. Like at the Pentagon.

That's not funny. My abuelita used to say that when I was bad.

And as a bedtime story, as well as La Llorona.

of the plane digging a hole in the ground.

Tornados hit trailer parks/homes, not motor homes.

A co-worker plays softball with this guy, and emailed the link around this AM. I thought I'd spread the love and pics of a classic SoCal '60s era neighborhood.

It's stucco-tastic, now with added jet fighter!

I don't think they made it even that far. I think the impact would have been more than enough. That's really the only mercy here, it had to have been really really quick.

anyone know what's gonna happen to the pilot?

eynonmcwanker: anyone know what's gonna happen to the pilot?

I'd be a lot more interested in what's going to happen to the maintenance crew. The pilot did all he could to get that plane back to Miramar when the *second* engine blew. He ejected below the proper altitude, too.

He was one street away from getting the jet into the canyon behind those houses. 100-150 more feet, and he would have made it.

2008-12-09 08:50:28 PM
I'm not too sure about this one. As a former employee of ol Mac, it's sad to see one of these birds go down, however, I don't think that pilot did the right thing by bailing out, and letting the plane just land where it felt like it.. somewhere over suberbia.

Being in the military, isn't it kinda his job to be all protecty of the citizens? Shouldn't he have tried to glide it down the street, or something, like in that terrible movie where that hot chic landed the space shuttle in that spot where the shiny terminator in the truck was chasing the fleshy terminator on the motorcycle with that one kid who nearly became a racist, until he learned a valuable lesson from his brother, who eventually became the Incredible Hulk?

This whole thing is just so god damned absurd. If this had been written into the plot of a TV show, I'd be furious and never watch it again. God damn it.

eynonmcwanker: anyone know what's gonna happen to the pilot?

There will be an investigation. Probably the pilot will be exonerated, but most likely will never be allowed to fly again in an attack type aircraft.

Just a guess though.

This, I found some cell phone photos of the pilot before. He was obviously distraught. Eye witnesses report him almost begging to hear news that the plane landed any where but a house.

From what I read:

The pilot was on a training mission about the Lincoln, when the first engine failed after takeoff. ATC directed him to proceed to Miramar since there is considerable more runway for a jet to land in an emergency. On his way the second engine flamed out, and controls failed. Some eyewitness that the plane was clipping trees before he punched out, and he landed only a couple of blocks away from the site.

ugh....I would hate to have that on my conscience. I know I would have a hard time flying again.

he may not really have had time think about it.
yesterday eyewitnesses commented that the plane was clipping tree tops (in that area trees are less than 100 feet tall) before both seats (one unoccupied) ejected. also, the plane was in a sideways 'slide.'
in a perfect world the pilot would've ridden the jet down into an empty field. but with seconds to go, that yellow and black lever would look awfully tempting.

Miramar is surrounded by suburbia on the west and north sides. Packed tight. Normal approach and departure is from the east, but with one engine out, you take the shortest route you can.

Since he was coming from a carrier training exercise, no option but to come in over the houses. That's all there is. Unless you'd prefer he flew over the VA hospital or one of the larger malls in the county during Xmas shopping season.

Whenever it comes to a plane crash - My first thought isn't the pilot - its "who farked up in mainentance?"

Pilots take their job seriously - Especially ones in the military.

/ Although, I do wonder sometimes - How in the hell is McCain a pilot?

He (apparently) tried to keep it in the air long enough to be over the canyon. But if it isn't flying anymore, it isn't flying.

Not 'somewhere over suberbia'. The base is surrounded on 3 sides by houses. There is no approach from the water that does not go over "suberbia"[sic].

I'm going to guess they were dead long before those pictures were taken.
