Ferrous Capuchin: Rage Against the Machine - Killing in the Name

A powerful amazing song ruined by an awkwardly shoehorned-in solo that sounds like a vocoder thrown into a box of feral cats. True crap.

A lot of RATM songs are like that. Morello chilled out a ton when playing in Audioslave, but most of the guitar solos on Rage songs just seemed out of place.

Came here to say this.

How about the guitar solo from 'Should I Stay or Should I Go'...

2008-12-09 02:50:23 PM
Oasis - Champagne Supernova.
Nice Try, but that was actually Paul Weller playing the solo on the recording, not Noel Gallagher.

Also - where is the Doors "Light My Fire". Awful, awful solo...

2008-12-09 02:50:24 PM
No "No Sleep Till Brooklyn" solo with Kerry King?

2008-12-09 02:50:31 PM
Lenny Kravitz butchered American Woman. I am in complete agreement.

MattyBlast: The Joker - Steve Miller Band.

EVERYTHING by Steve Miller.

This guy was taught one-on-one by Chet Atkins, and he still sucks.

And btw, I know this is a Spike list, but that's one of the most poorly written articles I've ever seen on a major website.

There was a live version of Kenny Wayne Sheppard doing Blue on Black (I think) where he totally biffed the solo. Dont remember if it was an awards show or what, but he lost it. It was a total trainwreck.

anyone remember?

Hoopy Frood: And no mention of "The Cover of Rolling Stone"? For shame.

That was beautiful.

ryan_coke: You forgot about this guy. He Should be at number 1 only because he thinks he can actually play.

/Worst lead guitarist ever.

DNRTFA, but I'm assuming that all 7 are Metallica songs since all of his solos are pretty much the same nonsense.

He doesn't play nearly as well now, but his older work still kicks ass.

D-Liver: Cue the solo snobs who point out obviously talented guitar players and say they are total shiat.

*checks thread*

ryan_coke, glad you could make it.

/better more popular guitar player than you.
//and you and you and you and you and you and you...

FTFY and Kirk 'Mr. Bad Solo' Hammett.

elheat77: Doors - Light My Fire

/That is all

Yeah but that solo is the best thing EVAR when you're trippin' balls. I mean it painted a beautiful picture that discribed my life!

/not really

Favorite solo: Push comes to Shove - Van Halen
Least favorite solo: I don't really have one.

2008-12-09 02:52:22 PM
The solo for "Smells Like Teen Spirit" obviously fits the song perfectly, but technically speaking, it's just a few bars of tuneless nothing.

Um, it's the farking verse vocal melody.

2008-12-09 02:52:29 PM
elheat77: Doors - Light My Fire

/That is all

No, that isn't "all" and it certainly doesn't count as one of the 7 worst guitar solos.

Most of his solos with Audioslave were pretty embarrassing.

I thought the "Generic Blues" by Weird Al solo was tops!

/make it talk son, make it talk.
//OK now make it shut up.

2008-12-09 02:53:49 PM
FTFA: This is solo is so simple, it's retarded. All guitarist Jay Jay French did was take Dee Snider's chorus and copied it as the solo. Real creative, dude.

which means he took the melody and played it on the guitar. so we're taking points off because they decided to play something that fit the song and not throw a random "meedly meedly weedle weedle wee-ow wowwowwowwow" solo into it?

/o come all ye faithful

Don't get me wrong the song is awesome until it hits the elevator music solol.

I can safely say that I will never play this song on Guitar Hero again without laughing my ass off. Nice!

Yup. Like the voice, tuneless nothing.

rocinante721: Slaxl: Misfits - We are 138 was the first guitar solo I could ever play... it's not hard to see why, a complete novice can play it. still like the song though.

Never heard Neil Young's CINNAMON GIRL?

... which incidentally is one of the best solos (soloes?) there is. One note; plays the Hades out of itfarking This.

2008-12-09 02:57:02 PM
This list is justifiably made up of crappy guitarists. Everyone who's ever touched a guitar knows Cobain's stuff is easy as hell.

But good guitarists have some really really awful solo's as well (People are mentioning Morello quite a bit). There's no better examples of stupid, pointless, awful guitar solo's almost anything from Ted Nugent. Unless you count Drunk Carlos Santana. I swear in half of his new crap, he's just winging it.

/crappy guitarist

Damn kids and their ADHD. Just when I thought I had caught up....someone slaps me back down.

Incidently, "Cult of Personality" is the best song on Guitar Hero. Ever. Period. End of discussion.

5. Twisted Sister "We're Not Gonna Take It"

Said that the first time I heard it.

"Simple but effective."

Apply that to all the songs on the list/mentioned in the thread you want.

With all due respect for Elvis fans, nonetheless I humbly submit to you:

The guitar solo to "Heartbreak Hotel".

Stan Freberg skewered it in a parody recording, and called the solo "close enough for jazz".

No CC Deville? Every single time he picks up a guitar...

2008-12-09 03:00:20 PM
Kirk Hammett - most over-rated lead guitarist ever. He's really good at playing a scale over and over with a lot of wah!

2008-12-09 03:00:34 PM
Yes because being technically brilliant is the most important thing for an artist right?

/What no "Smoke on the Water" ???

Forgot to add that if you know 3 power chords (doesn't matter which)and turn the distortion and reverb up, anyone can sound exactly like Nirvana. Turn down the distortion and reverb a little and it's closer to early Pearl Jam and STP. Sorta. Might have to learn one or two non-power chords to round it out.

2008-12-09 03:00:59 PM
Beastie Boys "fight for your right" Kerry King solo.

/oof

I'm working on that right now actually...

mmmm Hades... Kalmah! Best solo evar. No joke

Are the people who hate Light My Fire's guitar solo thinking about the 3 minute radio version where only the very end of the solo is left in or the 7 minute original version, with the extended guitar/keyboard solo section.

Because the organ--guitar solos in the original 7 minute cut are very good.

As an Elvis fan I take offense to that statement. Partially because it's true.

Farkwaddle: Forgot to add that if you know 3 power chords (doesn't matter which)and turn the distortion and reverb up, anyone can sound exactly like Nirvana.

If only Nirvana had thought to make a famous, critically lauded acoustic album. They could have brought in some of the dudes from Meat Puppets, maybe.

elheat77: And I am telling you that you are wrong. Let's go in circles

Oh I'm not wrong. I do appreciate a good solo when I hear one, and other than your personal dislike of it, there's not much to go on.

I'll admit Krieger's solo isn't fancy, but it brings a good mood to the song. I hate it when the radio play the single version that doesn't include it.

You could do a hell of a lot better in your choices to criticize.
