Rising tobacco use in developing countries is believed to be a huge reason for the shift, particularly in China and India, where 40 percent of the world's smokers now live.

So, the plants really are trying to kill us off. M. Night Shamalamadingdong was right!

2008-12-09 02:37:21 PM
Meanwhile, HMO's, PPO's and other medical insurance programs continue to deny coverage of smoking cessation products, thereby ensuring the majority of insured smokers have no incentive to quit.

That's one way to keep the bottom line happy, eh?

I once knew someone who had both cancer and the crabs. I said to the person that I guess lightning can strike twice, huh?

Idunno subby, I think I'd rather be the world's top killer than the world's top killee.

Wrong. In the US at least, obesity and its attendant maladies will decimate large swaths of the populace, especially those most at risk, Hispanic, black, etc.

Couldn't rising cancer deaths primarily be attributed to longer life spans/cures for other diseases?

If you're old and are not dying to a traditional disease/getting hit by a bus/getting chased off a cliff by a band of naked women, chances are you're gonna go out by cancer.

2008-12-09 04:28:43 PM
I don't get the headline.
I get that there is horoscope reference. But it says Cancer is going to be the number 1 killer, not killed.
So confused.
Someone please explain

Thanks to modern medecine, we're living longer, and so we have more time to be exposed to carcinogens, hence cancer nudging its way to the top.

Oh and before you decry the abundance of carcinogens due to "our blind obsession with technology," just about everything is a carcinogen in sufficient quantity, so there's no easy scapegoat here folks.

Cancer is a disease of the old, and we're getting old.

They don't really have any incentive to cover that stuff. Don't they pretty much deny coverage for smoking-related illnesses as well?

Hit the nail on the head old chap.

Yes. Reminds me of all those Concerned Parents that wanted to change the driving laws so kids between 16 and 18 couldn't drive after dark or whatever. "Car accidents are the number one cause of death for teenagers!" Yeah, what else is a teenager going to die of? Old age?

A friend of mine wore a parachute at all times. He got the ripcord tangled on a "what the butler saw" machine, the parachute opened and the wind dragged him out to sea. He was never seen again.

This is why I never go on piers.

NEWSFLASH!!! You will die of cancer if you keep polluting your body with garbage. It isnt just smoking....

look for food with
1. Nitrates
2. Artificial sweetners
3. arti....

well...let me simplify.

1. Eat natural foods (meaning actual fruits vegetables etc...not crap in a box)
2. Dont smoke
3. Excerise every now and then
4. Get a little bit of sun every day.
5. Avoid places with a lot of air pollution.
6. Avoid putting a bunch of wacky chemicals in your body.

Do that...you'll be fine!

People for the most part just dont have the discipline to take care of themselves. They would rather stuff their faces with garbage and treat their bodies like crap rather than do what it takes to stay healthy.

There are exceptions to this rule...some people will still get cancer. But MOST of it is preventable.

I live outside the US. Ill tell you i feel MUCH better after i got off cola, and processed foods. I am convinced these are key.

Because most people think, "Life sucks, and then you die." I disagree. I think life sucks, then you get cancer. Then you go into chemotherapy. You lose all your hair, you feel bad about yourself. Then all of the sudden the cancer goes into remission. You look good you feel good, you're going great, and all of the sudden you have a stroke. You can't move your right side. And one day you step off the curb at 68th by Lincoln Center and bang, you get hit by a bus. And then, maybe, you die.

Bush is a cancer, and he killed at least million Iraqis. Not sure how many innocent Afghanis he was indirectly responsible for.

Oh well. Guess he won't be tried as a war criminal anytime soon.

Stay classy, America...
