Are 8000 UK jobs worth the same as 16000 US jobs?

Good one, Subby

I guess people can't easily buy a $400 toy.

2008-12-09 10:22:08 AM
I'm sure the CEO's bonus is going to equal the salaries of about 500 of those walking.

very nice. sucks for the workers but still.

/golf clap sir.

Article headline is misleading. 8,000 cut, 16,000 by April 2010. The Sony PS3 fanboys are already having fits over the news.

2008-12-09 10:23:48 AM
It's under 9000!

It's such bullshiat.

We're heavily into a recession (Canada), yet the teachers and bus drivers in my city are STRIKING (even though IMHO they were handed fair contract offers).

Then you got CEO pricks trying to stuff their own stockings with huge bonuses.

Way to band together during tough economic times, douchebags.

They are closing a plant in France that manufactures cassette tapes. Sounds like they are losing a highly profitable enterprise there.

What's next? Is Ampex going to close down their facility in Colorado Springs that manufactures 8 track tapes?

Holy crap! I hadn't thought of that! Oh Noes! Now where will I get my 8 track tapes?

What's your point here? A business' responsibility is to the share holders, not providing jobs they don't need filled. If a business does not need the help of an employee anymore, then they have the right to cut that position.

Lobster_of_Hate: Sony = Overpriced goat shiat.

I guess my stand is just a geeky one, but ever since the rootkit issue they had, I try not to buy anything Sony. Then they used the PS3 to push Blu-Ray (even though HD-DVD was superior). Plus for a long time their digital music players didn't originally support mp3, but their own proprietary file format. I used to think Sony was a great electronics manufacture, but I now think you can get the same products from other vendors, with less of the bullshiat.

Quality headline.

You must be living in a different Canada than me. I haven't yet seen signs of a recession, much less heavily into one.

For some reason that headline makes me think it would've made a great mitch hedberg joke.

In what way is HD-DVD superior to a Blu-Ray? I guess I fail to see the superiority and "geeky", I'm a Software & Information Systems major. As far as other things, Sony is better than most. Their televisions are high quality and the quality level of the Playstation 3 trumps that POS Xbox 360, which I currently have sitting in a UPS truck somewhere coming back from repair for the third time.

The funny thing about layoffs. If they happen often enough to anybody in the company (except those at the top) than after a while people will stop giving a sh*t about what they do and how they do it. If the guy who dedicated his life to a company and busted his ass for 17 years gets handed walking papers the same day as the slacker that called came in late and left early everyday and called in sick 3 times a month for 2 years than why bother working hard at all.

I live in the same Canada as you...

The Bank of Canada has slashed its trendsetting interest rate by three-quarters of point to 1.5 per cent, declaring Canada has entered a recession.

A dual-layer HD DVD holds a maximum of 30 GB of data, while a dual-layer Blu-ray carries 50 GB.

Clearly HD-DVD was superior.

Although Microsoft trumps everything else gaming side. Build quality was the 360's only fault. Sony's software offering this time around has been pathetic.

Hey, for the price the Sony DSCW150 is the best combination of resolution, features, and fast shutter lag times out there. You can get higher resolutions at the cost of slower lag times, and you can get faster shutter lag in the Ricoh Caplio R7 but at a rather higher price. The Nikon Coolpix are slow as molasses, and for those of you who would recommend a Powershot, try the darn things with the flash on. Best sub-200 dollar ultra compact camera on the market.

SpeedingLunatic: Clearly HD-DVD was superior.

Pro tip: when you're arguing with a nerd, he will invariably claim that his favorite technology is superior, but oppressed for strictly political reasons. If you trot out math, logic or statistics, you're "one of them."

All the evidence I ever need: Linux.

2008-12-09 11:06:45 AM
Sony blamed 'the sudden and rapid changes in the global economic environment'.

No shiat sherlock, no other group of consumers in the world can match American consumption at its peak. See what happens when America falls you foreign farkers lose your jobs. Bwhahahahah! Burn mother farker! Burn!

2008-12-09 11:08:07 AM
Laying off 8,000 people is no way to go through life, Sony

2008-12-09 11:08:51 AM
Playstation 3 sucks anyway.

Glitchwerks: Build quality was the 360's only fault

Exactly, everything else about the system is better in nearly every degree.

Up until recently, you had to sacrifice your third born, a chicken, and say a prayer to the ancient gods of old just to try and get multiplayer working right on Sony

Everything else? PSN is getting closer and closer to Live with each update and both consoles have pretty good and unique exclusive games. There aren't very many exclusives anymore, so essentially both consoles have the same games, just Microsoft has a time advance on their catalog of games. At the same time, I own both, and don't care how big of a library the Xbox has, I can't play the games because mine is always out for repair, which to me makes it a shoddy product and I probably won't buy one in the future.

2008-12-09 11:12:25 AM
So now there are 8,000 (soon to be 16,000) more people that can't afford to buy Sony's crap.

This whole economic mess is just a giant downwards spiral that we are not going to get out of by laying everyone off. There won't be any "share holders" that the buisness has to be responsible to if no one can afford to buy shares. So fark off MyRandomName and take your Reaganomics else where.

+1 on the headline

-100 for Sony, whose products used to be the epitome of class and quality, and are now barely distinguishable from knock-off brands that litter the shelves at WalMart. Sad to see a company piss away a near-legendary brand name like that - it would be like Honda devolving to produce Yugos...sad.

At least sony is still coming out with great products, like the Rolly...

Rolly is an egg-shaped digital robotic music player made by Sony, combining music functions with robotic dancing. It has several motors that allow it to rotate and spin, as well as two bands of LED lights running around its edge and cup-like "wings" (or "arms" according to the Sony sonystyle USA website) which can open and close on either end, all of which can be synchronized to the music being played. The product was unveiled on September 20, 2007, and went on sale in Japan on September 29, and its currently for sale at the Sony sonystyle USA website for $399.99 USD.

It would be fun to play around with one for say, an hour...but seriously $399.99!!!!!!
