In all reality, this is not a bad approach. Rather than acting like cannabis users are criminals deserving to be alongside the rapists in PMITA prison, give them the opportunity to take measures to improve their lifestyle if quitting or cutting back is the way to do that. That's about the level of involvement the government should have in regards to cannabis.

I'm one of the people they're targeting with that initiative, and I say to them heartly, fark off. I'm about to get promoted and get a raise, meanwhile I'm blazed 90% of the time I'm not at work. I'm also absurdly punctual and haven't missed a project deadline in months. Things don't necessarily go hand in hand, and we shouldn't all be painted with the same brush. People will simply stereotype against smokers more upon seeing those ads.

It would be, except I knew a lot of kids when I was in high school who smoked, and still did great in class and got into Ivy League colleges. And there were plenty of people I knew in college also who smoked and still did better than I did and got into grad school and all that good stuff.

And meanwhile here I am, living clean and not even a TotalFark account to show for it.

I had an awesome dream last night. My brother was alive (he died almost a year ago). We were hanging out at the lake, and it was just beautiful. The weather was crisp, but not cold. You know, cold enough to keep the bugs away, but you can still wear shorts if you want. And the air was clear enough to let you see for miles.

Anyway, we were smoking a tiny little joint that seemed to last forever - one of those ones that you need a clip for, but you don't have a clip, so you risk burning your fingers, and you wish your thumb was really small. We kept passing it back and forth, and every time I passed it, I thought, "he can go ahead and finish it because I'm already perfectly stoned and there's no way I can get another puff out of that thing." But he kept taking a few puffs and passing it back.

Anyway, from this dream I learned two things:
1) I really miss my brother; and
2) I love smoking weed.

I don't think the target of this propaganda health service message is actual users of marijuana. They'll all tell you they're just fine. The real target is potential users who don't know how it really works. "See, if you start, someday it will be really hard for you to quit and you'll need counseling and health care and blah blah blah." I used to smoke the stuff all the time, decided one day I wasn't having fun with it, and haven't touched it in like ten years. Here's the little secret they don't want you to know: it's not physiologically addictive the way cocaine, heroin, caffeine and tobacco are. It can be habit-forming and hard to quit, but that's a psycholocical addiction, more akin to an addiction to pizza or TV.

I am a "heavy smoker" in NY (getting kick etc.) and Fark causes me to slack more at work that weed ever did. Also the hopeless and irritable feeling just comes from being a New Yorker more than a marijuana abuser.

Humans have been using this substance since at least 2700BC Link (new window) so I don't think anything is going to stop people from using it.

I guess if you need help controlling any behavior it is nice that the state offers some help. But they should simply legalize it, tax it, and let us live our lives. The fact that they continue to waste resources on this subject is silly and for the most part everyone knows it.

I stopped smoking weed for a couple of years and then smoked with a buddy while on vacation for a few days and still felt the affects a week later.

I haven't touched it since.

It just doesn't do it for me anymore.

I don't have any of these problems and I would consider myself a heavy smoker. I'm not in debt and don't need to steal for it. It's just another line on my budget. I've also not been late to work or missed a meeting in 2 years. I'm definitely not depressed and motivation is not a problem for me.

Where I do have a problem is with alcohol. I'm not a happy drunk. I'm a mean drunk and I binge drink. I've had to pretty much give up alcohol as I began spending more time apologizing for things I don't remember than I actually spent drinking.

Anyone who is recommending that I give up weed and go back to drinking as a legal alternative definitely does not have my best interests in mind.

I feel like I should say something about prohibition in this thread just to make it fair.
