(Wall Street Journal)   "India demands action from Pakistan." Pakistan hints that maybe India should try to be a bit more romantic from time to time. A shower couldn't hurt either   (online.wsj.com) divider line

A little Pakistani play couldn't hurt though. If only India wasn't so polite...

two nuclear-armed countries.

just out of curiosity, does india have any ability to prevent further attacks? Don't they have lax, inept security with many vulnerabilities and weaknesses? Couldn't terrorists do this all over again next week and the week after without much trouble?

"warned that relations between the nuclear-armed rivals would suffer if swift action isn't taken."

I'm sensing a dramatic decline in global warming, after the initial, but short lived nuclear winter.

I'd rather have a nuclear war happen on the far side of the world, although I guarantee we'd get involved.

In Hyderabad, they put a mirror under your car as you drive into the parking lot of a tourist site or shopping mall, then you walk through a metal detector and get frisked as you enter.

But India is a densely populated, crazy place with numerous internal terrorist groups. They need to work on intelligence more than security. And they certainly need to work on their police force. How a few guys can hold a building hostage for 3 days is beyond me.

I do so like the vaguely racist comment by subby regarding how Indians don't shower and they all smell bad.

Nicely done.

Hmm, I wonder why 38 people were killed in Virginia massacre. If that loser hadnt killed himself I wonder how long the hostage situation would have played out or how many more would have died. Glass houses etc..

Just FYI, I have an office in India and was in Mumbai 2 weeks ago. I love the country and the people, but they will be the first to tell you their intelligence and security force is crap. Corruption is rampant throughout the civil service.

The problem is, the Pakistan government are as afraid of the Islamic goons as is India. Thus the whining about the US strikes in the border areas, but the total inability to stop them.

And the fundies in the ISI are entrenched like J Edgar Hoover was in the US.

I do know the colossal failure of the government. But saying How a few guys can hold a building hostage for 3 days is beyond me is a bit much. And FYI I am an Indian, so I know how far the govt of India let down its citizens. Not making excuses for it, but a 3 day hostage situation was a 3 day hostage situation. Definitely it should be improved. Just pointing out it could happen anywhere with a moron and a gun.

Fair enough. I watched some of the action at Nariman House and it looked a bit disorganized, to say the least. Then again, there is the Russian strategy for hostage rescue and we know how that works out. I shouldn't try to second-guess what was going on in Mumbai.

The only way to stop terrorism is to deny them safe bases of operation.

Pointy Tail of Satan: The problem is, the Pakistan government are as afraid of the Islamic goons as is India. Thus the whining about the US strikes in the border areas, but the total inability to stop them.

Here in Pakistan they do that too. They'll check under your car, in you trunk and under the bonnet. They'll pass you through a metal detector, swipe you with a wand and check your bags manually. And yet somehow they miss all the terrorists. Now, I'm not sure how it works across the border but if it's anything like here then these sort of measures are mostly useless because nobody's doing their job properly. I can't keep count of the number of times I've walked through a metal detector, it's gone off and the security guy's just let me through without flinching. Plus they have special lax policies with women, something I'm surprised extremists haven't picked up and used to their advantage yet. Whatever function these checks are supposed to serve, they end up acting mainly as an outward farce of security.
