I was planning on making fun of subby's questionable literacy, but after RTFA, I realize that he must simply have temporarily caught the dumb from the MMRF slide show.

It's OK, subby. Here's the antidote: http://richarddawkins.net/

Yeah, it is pretty farking lame, and it doesn't really help in a 21st century military. I had to verify everyone had two sets of dog tags before we deployed to Iraq, and ensure they were spelled correctly, had the correct religion, and had the correct social security number.

I was suprised at the number of NO REL PREF.

Hell, one of the civilian psychiatrists at Fort Riley, Kansas who worked with soldiers with PTSD, killed himself a few months ago.

I'm already wary of anyone who thinks they can tell me they know better than I do what's going on in my head. The Mental Illness Industry is almost as much of a social ill as religion. Combine the two and holy Fark, the stupid is frighteningly strong.

That's the problem, by commercializing it so much and catering to a la carte customers, they people who actually NEED the help get lost in the shuffle or get looked down on because of negative perceptions of the industry.

I find it amazing that they use Pat Tillman as one of their shining stars, yet he was rumored to be an atheist (he definitely wasn't a christian)

*CAUTION*

Side effects of trying to decipher that mess of a headline may lead to increased headaches and possible suicide.

A. Mandatory. Religious. Presentation.

Given to people in the military, who don't have the "option" of walking out or quitting, at the risk of their very freedom.

If anyone thinks this is not a problem, please do this nation a favor and strongly resist any suicide prevention lessons.

As an atheist myself, Dawkins is NOT the answer. He is too militant and to much of a douchebag to be the rally point for anything.

On topic however, Dawkins is a well adjusted citizen compared to the MMRF drivel that was vomited on that web page.

Dawkins has always struck me as a gentle, if brusque individual. I don't see much by way of "militant" in his bemeanor, interviews, or writings. Maybe that's just me though.

I suppose this isn't the place to point out that the 特攻隊 (a.k.a. "kamikazes") were quite "purpose driven airmen"?

That.

Anyone who says Dawkins is "militant" does not know what that word means, and is merely trying to be the "calm, acceptable" atheist. Dawkins is not remotely militant - he's never advocated any violence, any civil rebellion, or any social unrest, as far as I know.

Hitchens isn't militant either - he's just a bit of an ass. As if there's some horrofic crime in that.

DamnYankees: Anyone who says Dawkins is "militant" does not know what that word means

Dawkins is simply very British. Courteous, but he's not about to take any crap. He calls it as he sees it and is very direct. Hardly militant, but people insecure in their faith like to use "militant" as a smear.

DamnYankees: Hitchens isn't militant either - he's just a bit of an ass. As if there's some horrofic crime in that.

He is an ass. I find him funny, but he is an ass.

This isn't "The Military", this is an overzealous chaplain in the Air Force.

If the Air Force is like the Marine Corps, Chaplains are the first stop of counseling. They don't necessarily give religious advice, they are also secularly trained counselors. Whether that constitutes a conflict of interest is another valid issue, but it's why this chaplain was probably given jurisdiction over this particular brief.

So basically I'm saying lets not spread the idea that this is somehow widespread based on this one asshole.

I'm agnostic and I didn't really see any "preference" for one religion or another in the Marine Corps on an official level. I did see a couple of whiney biatches who threw little temper tantrums because the Christians wanted to pray before operations.

//Our chaplain got arrested on ship for having kiddie porn on his laptop.

Not surprised, my time in Uncle Sam's Canoe Club put me in contact with a LOT of evangelicals with rank, and they were happy to tell you all about their zombie/cannibal savior in situations you couldn't exit without "insubordination".

I think we're missing the part about being more Like George Washington.

Silk Hose!
Lipstick!
Eyeshadow!
Jewlery!

George was a Dandy. Many things he wore are not legal for men to wear in todays Army, even off duty.

Yes, with a millenia-long grudge match going on between islam, Hinduism and Christianity, coming off a horrifying terrorist standoff, what we need is more religion in the world's militaries.

Air Force leadership is packing that branch with Christian Fundamentalists. I thought this was common knowledge. Hell, the official recruiting slogan "Above All" is also the name of a very popular Christian contemporary song.

I remember the AF before the religious cranks started showing up. Luckily, I was in aircraft maintenance, which seemed like a whole different service than the rest of the AF.

I think the loneliest job in the squadron was the Chaplain. The only time anyone ever really saw the guy was when he'd come around the flight line on occasion to hand out snacks and drinks.

Exactly. Dawkins is exceedingly nice. Unless, of course, one's definition of 'militant' includes all people that refuse to shy away from making polite, logically sound, fact-based arguments just because they might offend some people.

Religion, any religion provides a sense of hope when the reality of your world seems bleak. People who believe in a religion also tend to live longer. Whether or not you believe a certain religion is stupid or a complete farce is up to you, but the benefits of believing in something that gives you hope can not be ignored.

It's amazing that assholes like you have no ability to perceive either the irony or hypocrisy in the stupid things you say. "Personally, I always felt Manson to be a nice, sweet-tempered individual. Unless, of course, you were one of the Pigs who needed butchering in the coming Race-War."

"Cannot be ignored"? Really? You'd be astounded at how good I am at ignoring things that have nothing to do with me. Why, just today, I ignored "Dancing With the Stars", Britney Spears, the looming cobalt shortage, and, oh yes - religion. You'd be surprised what you can ignore when you put your back into it.

Step #1: Identify the cause. Do you feel like your life is wasted? This is because Osama Bin Laden killed your countrymen on 9/11, and then fake Americans (republicans) decided to throw your life away on Iraq.

Step #2: Get transferred to Afghanistan. Doesn't it feel good to actually fight America's enemies, rather than Texaco's enemies? This should immediately make you feel better about yourself and your country.

Step #3: Vote democrat. Many of you already did this, with great success! You're already on the way to preventing the chickenhawk GOP Frenching up our military.

Step #4: Do your part to change military policies. If the military allows in homosexuals while simultaneously banning Republicans from serving in the military, our army's gayness will DROP by about 300%. Imagine if a limp-wristed pretty boy replaced every Bin Laden apologist GOP soldier in the military. If we had done this years ago, North Korea probably wouldn't have gotten nukes!

These are four helpful steps for soldiers to deal with thoughts of suicide.

/For the record, I love God's eerie betrayal of the "GOD'S WILL" crowd that said the Lord elected Bush
//Don't forget, it was GOD'S WILL that America be governed by the most liberal senator in history.
