The one 200 meters from my house is still open....

Then again maybe that's only the US branch that's collapsing.

I think they're going to stay open until after Xmas, so you've got one lanst chance to get down there & load up on Pick & Mix

Not the one where I live, though it looks like it may collapse.

/The last time I was there it smelled like Lysol and dirty diapers.
//Not the shopping experience I go out of my way for.

If we can just get this out of the way:

Woolworth GmbH != Woolworths Group PLC (currently in administration) != F. W. Woolworth Company (no longer trading as Woolworth, now Foot Locker) != Woolworth Cyprus (also no longer trading as Woolworth)

Our local branch was open, and thronged with greater than usual hordes of the great unwashed, as of 90 minutes ago.

Sweet mammories of 16 year old saturday girls in the back stockroom on late night stock taking, stuff that would get me a federal sentence in less enlightened places, or a cash reward from the letters page of Penthouse in more liberal societies.

Nobody should mourn for Woolworths, they deserve to die, but the spiriti of the hot n horny saturday girl will live forever.

Woolworths UK aren't like the US ones from what I gather. The UK ones are/were known for their rather excellent selection of sweets and Pick'n'mix. One of the few places you can get candy letters.

The "spiriti"? That brings this Latin loving Saturday girl pic to mind, complete with heartwarming story of her "hot" days at Woolworths.

I'm strangely amused that Martin Scorsese, Elvis and Colin Powell did that job for their neighbors.

Of course UK candy letters have extra U's and far less Z's than the US equivalent.

Did anyone figure out what in the hell these Saturday Girls are, and why they sound hot?

Meh. I liked Friendly's waitress uniforms better. If a girl looked good in that blue gingham/polyester, you knew she'd look good in anything. Or less.

Anything and everything in America is temporary bullshiat that will fade and die as far as the world goes. Right now, might makes right, but that doesn't last either. It's a two bit whore almost at middle age.

SBinRR: Did anyone figure out what in the hell these Saturday Girls are, and why they sound hot?

In many high street shops, the staff are augmented on the weekends by poorly paid teenagers. These mainly consist of girls aged 16-19, often wearing a uniform, or a too-tight blouse.

I don't remember being in a US Woolworths since like 1978 maybe. In St. Louis there was one at River Roads (the mall is gone) and at Northwest Plaza (going that way).

I was in one in South Africa in 1999. Which was interesting because they had clothes and groceries. It was kind of like a JC Penney's but with a food department.

Thanks for that info. I was thinking it must be something like that, but wanted the confirmation.

I thought Roses had long faded away too, until Wednesday, driving through South Hill, VA and passed one. Granted, there was a big sign proclaiming 'FINAL CLOSEOUT SALE', but who knows how long that's been there. Didn't go in though.

There used to be one in Ashland, VA too, which I stumbled across long after I thought they'd shut down, back in the 90s. I was convinced Rose's HAD to be on it's last legs after going inside that one. It just seemed to be a bunch of shelves with random stuff on them, no rhyme or reason. I guess doing it that way must cut down on stocking and reshelving costs.

/it even had a 70s feel and smell to the store
//used to go to Roses all the time as a kid in Martinsville, VA in the 70s. That and Globeman's.

2008-11-28 11:27:47 PM
Wow, I had no idea they were still around. They used to be everywhere in my area (Toronto, ON) but I haven't seen one in probably 10-15 years.

..yeah.

I'll have to look to see if the one on the high street is still open. It woudl be a shame to lose somewhere within a two minute walk where I can get a bedsheet and set of pillowcases for a fiver, or a new frying pan for two quid.

Kroger is the second largest retail grocery chain behind walmart. The Kroger may have left, and been replaced with one of their many child grocers...
