It's about time "The Man" did something right.

I'm with you Twiztidlojik.

"A state-mandated defibrillator may have saved the life of an Oswego woman who apparently suffered a heart attack while watching a swimming meet Saturday."

What kind of swimming meet was this? One run by the Chippendales?

2003-01-12 06:04:54 PM
We got those all over my skool.

Sigh.. So many defillibrators, so few people with hearts prone to stopping.

2003-01-12 06:06:47 PM
I blame Dubya. Oh wait...

2003-01-12 06:08:45 PM
It probably would've been easier if the lady was just not fat. Then the heart attack could've been avoided completely. But thumbs up to defilibrators anyway.

2003-01-12 06:11:00 PM
Freakemart - Where does it say she was fat?

2003-01-12 06:11:22 PM
Henchman - not swimming meet - swimmer's meats... she passed out 'cause he had a big dong.

2003-01-12 06:14:27 PM
She has 2 kids, is a teacher, and has a heart attack at 43. Is there any doubt?

2003-01-12 06:15:42 PM
Freakemart --

My father-in-law had a heart attack at 50. He was in perfect health (underweight if anything) and was a doctor.

Heart disease does not strike only fat people.

I've seen information on these units - technology has come a long way! They're practicaly idiot-proof and they will not deliver a shock if a heartbeat is detected. In other words, no shocking your friends for fun. Cool stuff.

On a related note, though, I was playing with an older HP defibrillator once (my brother was a volunteer EMT and ambulance driver) and was checking my pulse with the paddles on my chest when my brother energized the defib unit (sudden rising bzzzZZZZZZ!!!) just for fun. I nearly needed the thing right after that.

2003-01-12 06:16:40 PM
I shall propose a law requiring people with heart problems to buy their own darned defibrillator. They'd probably have more heart attacks if they had to lug one around, but at least they'd get some use out of it. :)

Crazyfloyd99: I wonder if she can sue for being denied a happy death?

2003-01-12 06:18:26 PM
That may be true. But the evidence is there.

Galland: Doesn't Cheney have some kind of mini-defib thing installed in his chest?

I have a friend that wants that thing hooked up to a website: "shocktheveep.com"

2003-01-12 06:19:32 PM
No evidence jerky, just flaimbait.

2003-01-12 06:20:59 PM
for a moment i thought i saw devibrator. =)

2003-01-12 06:21:35 PM
hey, i live in rochester. eat rochester actually. they just put these things in our school, ones still empty. someone opened one, and the flashing red light on top turned on, the principal got all red faced because it automatically calls 911 when its opened.

2003-01-12 06:22:42 PM
Spinstopper--I'm glad you said that. When I first read this I couldn't believe they'd have these things in the schools. I was just wondering how long it would be before some idiot kid killed another one with those things....next thing you know they'll have cardiac needles around with adrenalyne (sp?) and see how many kids act out Pulp Fiction with it...Good to hear the defibrillators are much safer these days..

2003-01-12 06:22:45 PM
Who gets sued if someone uses the device and she still dies?

2003-01-12 06:23:25 PM
East Rochester you mean? Hey, I live in Fairport ^_^

2003-01-12 06:25:53 PM
How long before something like that scene from The Thing happens and everyone gets pissed. Not long I bet!

Our school has these all over the place, too. We had a kid die three years as a sophomore. He collapsed and went into cardiac arrest after finishing soccer practice at his town club. The next day was our school's day of service, and since then they've dedicated the day to the kid.

He was a really nice guy, I didn't know him too well but he always used to smile in the hall way when he walked by. Totally not the kid you'd expect to have a heart problem, he wasn't fat and he was pretty active.

2003-01-12 06:33:01 PM
err oops...that comment was directed towards Sensurround.

I don't technically live in Rochester, but I'm moving there soon. (I have attended RIT so that's why I like the area.)

2003-01-12 06:35:38 PM
I have used these things alot in the field and they are awesome. They are even popping up in private homes now. They are simple to use and give the victim a much higher chance of survival than just cpr alone. AED's should be in malls, business centers, anywhere that people congregate.
Age and fitness may play a role in some heart attacks but I have seen very healthy people hit the floor pulseless.

2003-01-12 06:36:44 PM
sigh...just another example of government spending and waste, taking money away from those unfortunate rich and wasting it.

2003-01-12 06:37:06 PM
See ! See ! If the damn Repuglicans would let us spend more money, we'd all live forever. But no, they want to hog all them defrig-a-majigs for themselves. Butt-heads.

2003-01-12 06:37:41 PM
TheOmni: If you went to RIT then you should know how boring and dull Rochester is. I'm transferring out of RIT to get away from this god-forsaken land.

2003-01-12 06:38:38 PM
I read this and I had to submit it. I moved to Rochester from Oswego 6 months ago. Funny thing is, I've never seen one of these things anywhere. Then again, I do try to stay away from government buildings...

2003-01-12 06:39:32 PM
LadyLazaruss: When I first heard that these defibrillator units were going to be available to be distributed to schools, restaurants, etc. a couple of years ago, I too was more than a little concerned. So I did some research. A lot of thought went into the design of these things, making them almost impossible to misuse, but extremely easy to use correctly, regardless of the language of the person using the machine (the instructions are all in pictograms, and the device has only three or four buttons, if I remember correctly).

And, yeah, it calls 911 right away if you open it :)

2003-01-12 06:48:43 PM
Alterian. Yeah, you sure sound like an RIT student.

Is no-one going to complain about the missing apostrophe?

2003-01-12 07:35:14 PM
Interesting...I didn't think that high schools would generally need defribulators.

I live about 2 hours south of Rochester in Corning...I don't understand why people choose to go to college out here because it's so damned boring. I mean, don't you want to go to a fun real city?

THATS why it didn't work! Crap.

The woman, Judith Schneider, 43, of Oswego, Oswego County, had to be resuscitated three times at the pool by the defibrillators....."On the way to the hospital, we had to shock her again about three or four times."

Man, she was really determined to die!

Cleckmoon

You're funny :)

2003-01-12 07:57:15 PM
why won't the government let the free market determine where defibrillators are located? Goddamn liberals, destroying honest businesses and wasting my money! People should be free to choose defibrillator-equipped or non-defibrillator-equipped businesses! taking away that choice is just pussy communist thinking!!!

2003-01-12 07:58:25 PM
OK since everyone is on the same bandwagon, I have to be the lone voice of dissent. Do you think if we pass enough laws noone will ever have to die ever again? I mean, if we put fully staffed triage units every 5 miles along each highway there would be fewer fatalities from accidents. People die, its as natural as rain on a goddamn sunday morning. On the other hand, I have 'DNR' tattooed on my chest, so maybe I'm just scared some idiot won't know what it means and would revive me anyway.

No Blood For Defribilators!

You know, because it's a democratic rag...I got nothin'

Behold the result of the aging Baby Boomer generation. We can all look forward to Coke with Geritol, the Delta 88 SUV, matching belt-and-shoes specials at Old Navy, more movies with ancient-as-dirt leads being romantic with 18-year-olds, and ICU's in every office park.

Campaign slogan in 2012: "Don't trust anyone under 60."

2003-01-12 08:43:35 PM
UrinalPooper--Funny name. Reminds me of my dorm back in college that used to be an all mens dorm and was switched to coed. Every week someone would find a drunk girl passed out or in the process of passing out trying to use the urinals left from when it was an all mens dorm.

And by the way, I agree with what you said too. They don't seem to be able to accept that people must die someday. Things like Alzheimers and dementia are solid proof our bodies just can't handle living to be that old.

2003-01-12 08:47:02 PM

Actually they will only deliver a shock if a heartbeat "is" detected. If the patient is in defib then the machine will shock to stabilize the heartbeat. If you don't have a heartbeat the machine just tells you to continue CPR.

east rochest*, yes excuse me Alterian. actually i just moved into the edge of Pittsford, Pittsford Manor. I'd call it an upgrade.

Sensurround: You're obviously a rather large TMBG fan...did you happen to catch the showing of Gigantic up at the Little?

TheOmni: There are only two good things about RIT...the anime club and the hockey. Everything else I won't miss at all.

2003-01-12 09:05:32 PM
I don't much care for hockey, and I've found a lot of other things that I love at RIT.

2003-01-12 09:06:57 PM
RIT Hockey is great....I just go to watch us beat the crap out of the other teams.

If you're bored and want to talk you can reach me at the aim name Amber Thelyn
