Remarkable. It's hard to see how school's EVER got away with racism like that.

FTA...

I mean yeah, they had to ride in the back of the team bus, but not letting them play in the bowl game was going too far said Quarterback Joe Oliverio.

/Just kidding!
// Was in 2nd grade when our elementary school desegrated. We couldn't figure out why some teachers were pissed about it.

Heh, reading the headline, I thought it was going to be this year (I know the bowl invitations haven't gone out yet, but I'm drunk) and some small school declined because of the stupid BCS system.

Man, was I surprised at how wrong I was.

I like that the mood seemed to be more of a, "we don't want to go without our buddies" as opposed to a more righteous, "we are standing up to the system" kind of statement.

FTFA: "...There was a lot of anger," former offensive tackle Jack Dempsey said. "We just threw the ballots on the floor and left. It was, 'Let's get out of here and go get a beer'."

WIN.

Evans was interviewed on Election Day, hours before the ballots were counted and Barack Obama became the first African-American elected to the presidency. Sitting at his dining room table in a well-appointed condominium in a tony part of the city-just around the corner from where he went to grammar school- Evans reveled in America's transformation.

what does that mean?

I went to the school that wound up winning that bowl game, so I'm getting much less of a kick out of these replies than I did yesterday.

Well, that's actually been enlightening for me. The school (ETSU...now Texas A&M-Commerce) only has 2 Tangerine Bowl banners, celebrating their 1953 win (33-0 over Tennessee Tech) and their Jan. 1, 1958 win (10-9 over Southern Miss.) Until I read this article, I really didn't know they had a third Tangerine Bowl title, the one referred to in this article. I guess they choose not to celebrate it. Maybe out of respect to Buffalo, I don't know. From what I can see from the records, though, ETSU would have been Buffalo's opponent if they had chosen to go; Missouri Valley was the substitute school, representing the East.

If you'd consult a dictionary, you'd learn that tony means fashionable or stylish - from the term "high-toned".

Cool story, even though the only two people I know that go to UB are complete and utter douchebags that probably would have sided with the Bowl organizers in that case.

Ah well. I never would want to go to UB (too friggin huge), but I hope they do well.

The ESPN article has Florida State as the other team though. So did the article in the UB school paper last year. Don't understand why FSU decided not to go either.

nice story. good for Buffalo for giving NY a reason to watch college football.

//SUNYAC hockey is more prominent though. SUNY's not really known for the athletics.

Maybe they decided that one was fraudulent since the opponent who originally earned the bid wouldn't have been allowed to play at full strength?

go Bulls!

coincidentally 50 years later UB is the only D1 school to have a black athletic director, head football coach, and head basketball coach.

At least there is one positive sports-related story in Buffalo this year.

And one of the few D1 schools that have a woman coaching a mens athletic team (Vicki Mitchell, Cross country)
