(Wall Street Journal)   There are 68 bowl slots, but only 61 teams have enough wins to go to one. So Michigan may get an invite to the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl, the Roady's Humanitarian Bowl, or the Sucks to Be You Bowl   (online.wsj.com) divider line

This is why I hate college football. I wish it was about the game, but it's about the money.

I wish I could write headlines like this.

2008-11-21 12:40:23 PM
And with teams playing one or two more games, there'll probably be 70+ bowl eligible teams.

Clemson, Virginia, Louisville, Memphis, UTEP, Hawaii, ULL, FAU, Bowling Green & Akron are all 5-5 with 2 more chances to win 1.

That doesn't include the 16 teams that are 5-6, 4-6 or 4-5 who are still technically in the hunt to reach 6 wins.

2008-11-21 12:48:38 PM
So, we need 68 teams to fill all the bowl slots.

Right now I see 71 teams that either are or definitely will be bowl eligible by the end of the season. Won't be a problem.

What about the Toilet Bowl?

2008-11-21 01:13:27 PM
Would it be that tragic if the San Diego Credit Union Bowl and the Boise Bowl went under? The bowl system has become nothing more than an extra way for college coaches to thump their chests and keep their jobs. Meanwhile, every other sport in America determines their champion through a playoff bracket. I don't even think the bowls and a playoff are mutually exclusive, but the argument about the "tradition" of the bowls, if not already dead, dies here and now.

No, that's where the Lions, Chiefs, Browns and Bills play to figure out who's the worst.

If you don't win 8 games, you don't deserve a bowl. Any bowl. All the bowl games prove each year is that the FBS division in college football is about $$$ and ratings, not about championships or team effort.

Little known secret: FCS (division 1-aa) football is just as exciting to watch and has playoffs.

Every possession that doesn't end in a turnover should count as automatic points for both teams.

Miami got schooled last night because of incredibly poor ball control, and Georgia Tech did everything right to get them to do just that. It wasn't even as close as the score suggested!

On the topic of bowls, once you get past the level of, say, the Outback bowl the pickings get fairly uninteresting. I mean, how psyched are you when your team barely makes it into the Meineke bowl? I certainly wasn't given any thrill by watching Penn State in their concession game last year after losing to Michigan State.

Of course, I'm a playoff proponent, so what do I know?

Perhaps Miami should learn to read their keys and keep their assignments, especially when playing against an option. All they needed was discipline

No. The bowls are too diluted as is. If you let teams in with losing records then going to a bowl is utterly meaningless.

I honestly would rather that they starting inviting FCS teams with winning records to the bowls than FBS teams with losing records.

I'd think you'd get some interesting results, too. Some of the 6-6 "meh" teams from larger conferences treat their invites to the lesser games and play as if they're in the "Apathy Bowl".

Screw Michigan, give it to Baylor out of sympathy for being in the Big XII South.

2008-11-21 02:35:29 PM
Even more evidence that they need to be gone: through 5 weeks of the season, NO ONE was qualified to go to a bowl game.

This is as stupid as saying "there are 12 NFL playoff spots, but only 4 of the 8 divisions have a team with 8 wins! This proves that there are too many playoff spots!"

2008-11-21 02:37:28 PM
The bowls could (should?) be converted to a playoff system - a 16 team playoff would only require 15 games and could include all conference champions + a couple of other worthy teams. If they started in early December, they could still conclude the 1st week of January. Bowls not involved in the playoff would see their matchups improve, and they could all move to Jan 1, since the playoff system would only have 2 games that week.

I know I've been harping on this for some time, but should they really give a spot to the winner of the NFC North?

2008-11-21 02:46:22 PM
Hawaii has to win TWO more games (2 out of 3) as they play a 13 game schedule. Idaho, WSU, and Cincinnati are left on their docket. They could easily beat WSU, and should beat Idaho, but Cincy looks like a definite L. 6-7 = no bowl.

They should play the winner of the AFC West, that would eliminate at least one shiatty team from the playoffs.

My thoughts exactly. They are spread out enough that some teams could play in two.

2008-11-21 02:49:12 PM
KiwDaWabbit Why are you looking at the NFC North first? Look at the AFC or NFC Wests first. At least Minnesota and Green Bay were competitive with Tennessee, as was Chicago.

According to ESPN, there are currently 26 teams with a shot to be bowl eligible. The odds are good that Riddick is still alive that this is will be a non-story.

Oh wait, I mean, EVERYBODY PANIC!! Division 1-A Bowls are becoming financially less viable which offers incentive to do something about it!!
