Utilizes hard drive technology - fast I/O - compact - LCD screen - doubles as external hard drive - voice recognition.

Sounds like an iPod that you talk to... I'm giddy.

Feh.

I wish someone would come out with a hard disk recordable system that doesn't use lossy compression, and has digital imputs and outputs. sigh..

2003-01-11 01:24:35 AM
As if iPod was "good" to begin with???

2003-01-11 01:25:24 AM
Regardless of what you may hear, USB2 is NOT as fast as firewire.

2003-01-11 01:26:04 AM
voice recognition?! wont be needing these blasted fingers anymore!
theyve also added an fm tuner and voice recorder, items you can recieve free with a subscription to sports illustrated or drop the 15 bucks for at radioshack.
TECHNOLOGY IS WOOSHING BY ME!

2003-01-11 01:27:33 AM
and there's no picture?

ms feiss would say: "..like, there's no picture of it, and it doesn't go like beep beep cuz it knows my voice and stuff?"

I just got an iRiver SlimX, and I must say it kicks ass. It plays mp3s as well as normal cds and many other formats. And the firmware is upgradable, so it will grow as other formats come along.

The only drawback is you have to burn the mp3s to a cd to listen to them, but thats not a big deal. A regular cd is around 70meg or so, but with mp3s you can have abour 700megs, which is a lot of music.

It's a hell of a lot cheaper than an ipod(around $130). I already had the cd burner, most people do these days.

I love this thing! It's small (about as thick as 1 cd jewel case) and fits in my jacket pocket. And the price was right! Check it out if you are shopping for one, iRiver's website.

I would still prefer firewire over USB 2.0 connection. Doesn't cost much to add if you don't already have it on your system. If they are smart they would support for Ogg files if the design/cost is feasible.

I thought voice activated computers were cool once. ONCE. There is alot of freeware available to make your machine open programs, type, etc. You get tired of yelling at your machine really fast, and then you start to just feel stupid. It's alot easier and convenient to just press a button. Who the hell wants to be seen in public yelling at their walkman "PLAY THE VILLAGE PEOPLE!".

2003-01-11 01:28:32 AM
So... it is a clone of the iPod... but with useless features like voice recognition and a radio tuner? I can't wait to meet the lazy sum'biatch who needs the ability to change tracks and navigate a menu via voice command.

2003-01-11 01:28:41 AM
When they come out with a 20Gig Solid State MP3 player, then I'll buy one

2003-01-11 01:30:47 AM
WOW, are you saying that an mp3 player developed today will be more technologically advanced than one made two years ago? a-farking-mazing!

2003-01-11 01:31:24 AM
My car was broken into last night. They didnt take my MP3 player. Im glad the crackheads are morons.

Dmiller: As opposed to the 20Gig mp3 players with vacuum tubes?

2003-01-11 01:32:15 AM
keep waiting DMiller...

I believe this technology, like cell phones, will continue on the "tiny and shiatty" expansion tree over something that actually works tree...

TommyymmoT: Did we detect some sarcasm there? My Cray III mp3 6000 still works as great as it did that Xmas morning in 1977 when I found it under the tree. It holds up to 2 songs, and uses less electricity than a washer and dryer. And when it comes to designing computers, Cray still kicks ass.

2003-01-11 01:37:15 AM
ipod is still sexier

2003-01-11 01:37:18 AM
Pfft. My 20 gig Archos Multimedia Jukebox does MP3s, pictures, AND videos, plus it doubles as a music and voice recorder and a digital camera. It kicks ass. And it's still cheaper than an iPod.

2003-01-11 01:37:39 AM
With all these companies stealing ideas and designs from Apple as of late, I'd of swore Apple stole those ideas and designs from Xerox...

2003-01-11 01:38:24 AM
One of the few practical uses for voice activated technology that I see would be for people who are paralyzed or with severely limited mobility.
DrToast - That looks like a shiatty 3rd world Ipod knockoff that fell off the back of a truck in Hong Kong

2003-01-11 01:39:09 AM
Wow, voice recognition. That really kicks iPods butt, dont it? NOT! Whats so great about voice recognition, anybody whos too lazy to use there fingers needs to be shot. It uses usb 2.0 which sucks ass, and it acts like a add-on hard drive, so does the iPod. I still say the Ipod could whip its ass with both hands tide behind its back.

2003-01-11 01:40:14 AM
Uh... how is this better than my 20 gig iPod? I doubt this thing would be able to navigate my 2000+ mp3s easily by voice.

2003-01-11 01:41:53 AM
I see, they are going for that highly sought-after "crippled and gimped" market. I would normally feel bad for saying that, but business and morals do not mix well.

2003-01-11 01:43:06 AM
IMNSHO, it sounds like a dud. What sort of "feature" is voice operation on a MP3 player?

The iPod looks interesting, but I don't listen to enough music to make it a worthwhile purchase. Unfortunately.

Interesting however Apple made popular HDD-based MP3 players with the iPod.
Come to think of it, they pretty much single handedly brought USB into mass popularity as well by replacing ADB on all their systems.
Ooh, there's the Newton ushering in the PDA market.

Hm. I'll shut up now. My work is done here.

Does one say Snoop-Dogg or Snoop double o gee?

2003-01-11 01:44:35 AM
Woodchipper, I'm pretty sure Apple only made USB popular on Macs. It was already a staple in the Windows world (it is made by Intel) AFAIK.

I agree, if they want to be better than iPod, they shouldn't try to look like it.

2003-01-11 01:46:07 AM
On another note, how stupid would anyone walking around with a headset on look, saying things like "NAVIGATE TO BLACK SABBATH" loudly?

2003-01-11 01:49:00 AM
Nobody has asked how long this player will remain compatable with unsecured media. That is, once they launch the subscription music service supported by the iPod knock-off, how long until a firmware update which restricts where files can be downloaded from?

As of late, one of the key drawing points of Apple has been their contempt for digital media fascism... er security.

2003-01-11 01:49:16 AM
If it doesn't play Vorbis files, who gives a crap? MP3 is doomed to fail.

2003-01-11 01:50:00 AM
Quobobo - Maybe as stupid as someone who carries a cell phone with a bluetooth/earpiece and loudly carries on a conversation in public places?

2003-01-11 01:50:53 AM
Shouldn't this say ?

2003-01-11 01:51:13 AM
Does one say Snoop-Dogg or Snoop double o gee?
it depends. either one is OK, but you can also say Snoop dee ow double gizzle the shizzle.

I just thought it was funny that Dmiller used the term "solid state". That must have been some huge Xmas tree.

Ummm.....no. USB took off because it was a good idea.

Ooh, there's the Newton ushering in the PDA market.

Too bad it was a huge dud and hardly anyone's heard of it. Plus the thing is farking huge.

Hm. I'll shut up now. My work is done here. :)

I use the APE format for archiving all of my audio files; can't deal with a lossy format after spending at least an hour or two on transferring/segmenting an LP. If I do make MP3s, then they are all at the 256 bitrate.

2003-01-11 01:57:43 AM
have you guys been watching Snoop's Doggie fizzle televizzel?

"My Cray III mp3 6000 still works as great as it did that Xmas morning in 1977 when I found it under the tree."

Why not just use the Cray III emulator for the C64? Much smaller.

Well, two out of three ain't bad. It was both huge and a huge dud, but it was very much in the news in its heyday. Remember Doonesbury making fun of the handwriting recognition?

Yeah, like VHS did. Long live BetaMax!
