So I work on the north side of Spokane, Washington, but I live in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. So I drive an hour to work and an hour back. On my way home, I pass by three or more 'health spa' type places. One is in a building with one window, which is covered with plywood, and a poster of a 'pretty' asian girl is on display. Another is next to a martial arts place, and the windows are blacked out. The last one I see every day is in a TRAILER set up on Division.

These places are all... multi-functional, as someone put it.

So human trafficking stops on a dime if prostitution is legalized?

If it's legal and regulated, it means Johns can report the goings-on in such places without risking arrest. It also means cops can run stings without breaking the law.

It would certainly help, and I'm not opposed to the legalization of prostitution at all. Human trafficking is, obviously, done for other reasons as well, and there's a lot more than that which needs to be done.

TheGreyPiper: No, I think you can be consistently opposed to both. That's a pretty tenuous leap of logic yer makin there.

No. You can't.

Prostitution is an industry. It was an industry yesterday; it will be an industry tomorrow. No law you pass and no action you take will change that. This is inescapable. Every decision you make and every position you hold must reflect this.

It is unregulated; all of the logical consequences of unregulated business apply. Every decision you make and every position you hold must reflect this.

It is illegal; all of the logical consequences of engaging in activity you cannot report to the police apply. Every decision you make and every position you hold must reflect this.

Given all of the preceding, it is fair to say that these abuses are logical, foreseeable consequences of this "well-meaning" legislated morality.

The choice is legalized prostitution or human beings being kidnapped, sold, and raped. You don't get to abstain. You don't get to argue. It's one. Or it's the other.

Legalizing it won't stop it all, no. But I can find the people doing it much faster, and much more efficiently, if I can focus on the *illegal* whorehouses.

No, but it allows you to refocus your efforts. It also drains the market for illegal brothels.

That's a very interesting statement.

You know -- not believe, but know -- that one hundred twelve-year-old girls of your acquaintance are not involved in prostitution.

I can only conclude that (a) you know too goddamn many twelve-year-old girls, (b) you've been shot down one hundred times, (c) that the thirteen-year-old girls need the cash more, and (d) you might be the creepiest motherfarker on God's green earth.

I salute you, sir.

chevydeuce: Okay, maybe it sounds stereotypical...But why is it that most (all) of these "massage parlor" and "tanning salon" brothels are staffed/run/owned by Asians? Yes, there may be the occasional black/hispanic/other ethnicity working there, but by and large, it's always, ALWAYS Asian, or Pan-Asian women who are running the place....

There's a couple of answers. One is that prostitution is more accepted in most Asian countries, so being a brothel owner is not quite as stigmatized as in other places.

However, the better answer is that Asia, in case you weren't aware, is a pretty crowded place with a lot of poor people. For many people there just aren't many opportunities to get out of poverty, so human traffickers have an easy sell when they tell girls (or their parents) that they have great, well paying jobs in America as maids, seamstresses, or some other innocuous job. They smuggle them into the country or, if they have passports, take the passport/visa away when they get here, and basically imprison and force the girls into prostitution, taking all the money. In Europe and the East Coast, you see the same thing, only there are more Eastern European women (Ukraine, Belarus, Albania, etc.) for similar reasons.

Shaggy_C: I'm pretty sure my stripper girlfriend is a prostitute on the side, so I'm really getting a kick out of some of these replies. Really, I can't see why human trafficking even occurs. There's plenty of slutty hos out there who like the idea of working a job with no real schedule and tons of money. Believe me, I know all too well...

Believe me, these women are NOT getting 'tons of money'. They are kept imprisoned, with no contact with their homes, family, or outside world, and get nothing but bare minimum food and clothing. They get constantly raped, both by their pimps and, essentially, by their customers. If they get out of line, beatings and killings ensue. It's modern slavery.

wait wait wait, so the assertation you're making here is that people only bang 12 year old prostitutes because they can't go to legal of-age ones?

or is it because they want to bang 12 year old?

in which case, how will legalized prostitution in any way halt the flow of underaged human trafficking?

SnakeLee: Federal prosecutors say that Nguyen booked more than 70 flights in 2006, 2007 and 2008, allegedly carrying prostitutes to work at these brothels. The prostitutes were shuttled between Seattle and California or Seattle and Texas, Woo said. Woo said the women are from various Asian countries and that some are in the United States legally and others are not.

I know it's always funny to joke about going to prostitutes on fark, but the people who engage in human trafficking for prostitution are the most low life pieces of shiat on the planet. I'm glad they got caught.

peachpicker: LandOfChocolate: The sales manager of Mattress Liquidators, next door to the Avalon, also applauded agents and police for the crackdown. "They need to clean up this neighborhood," said Karsten Logan. "From 85th to 105th, it's kind of a prostitution area."

Yeah, I'm sure the guy selling discount mattresses really hates prostitution.

Say that's that, Mattress Man...

It's probably more of a NIMBY reaction because the brothel is costing him/her costing sales and bonus money. Visitors to the local rub and tug is not the kind of foot traffic most stores want in their mall.

Landlords "allow" these adult oriented businesses because they pay a higher rent than they would normally get for that space. They only time they get cleaned up when the adult business becomes a nuisance and the major tenants threaten action or the Landlord is a expecting a neighborhood revitalization project. Montgomery County (MD) shut down several AMPs with much controversy during the height of the real estate bubble.

Now that the bubble has burst, I can see a few AMP/Tanning Salon rub and tug businesses opening up and operating unmolested by local PD until the next bubble. Mortgages and Real Estate taxes still got to get paid.
