Zombie Protesters?

/Yes Gopher, they stink on ice.

Otherwise it was business as usual at the once-ornate compound that is now entirely covered by tents apart from a few patches of border dedicated to growing rice.

They're growing their own rice? Sounds like they're in for the long haul.

FTA: Diehard protesters occupying the Thai prime minister's offices brushed off a grenade attack that killed one person and wounded 23 on Thursday

Excellent choice of words. Toss in grenades, bombs and other incindiary devices and only 1 protester is dead. Yes, they are truly diehards.

Were they given an ultimatum that day?

"24 killed or wounded." True, although 23 were wounded, with only one killed.

Just sayin'.

NPR had a story on the "protesters" a week or two ago. They are supporting the monarchy...and the military and former government of status quo that actually ruled. They favor the old regime where all the power and profits went to them in Bangkok. The exiled (he's got an office at the airport 'cause he can't get into his regular office) prime minister's support was populist and he favors spreading the wealth to the provinces.

People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD)?

/I know their is a Pad Thai joke in there somewhere.

2008-11-20 11:08:39 AM
The problem is that both sides are idiots, and all of their actions are just to piss the otherside off, not to bring the country forward.

From PAD claiming that votes from Bangkok should be worth 2x as much as those in the north (those who voted for PPP, old TRT) because people from Bangkok are more educated. (Way to go and earn that D for democracy that you use in your name)

To PPP electing Taksin's brother in law after piggy piggy Samak was kicked out.

The King has drastically declined in health, in his recent interviews he barely has a voice.

I pity the King, a man who did so much for his country, who is probably of of the most loved by the people political figures in history, has to watch his country destroy itself internally during his last years.

The man worked his ass off trying to better the country, and now these asshats do all of this while claiming to love the king, wear yellow polo shirts and waiving yellow flags.

Oi E-heeah Ba-nok....

thai people get pretty scary when it comes to politics. When I was there in the spring, the only place I could get booze was at the hotel because it was an election day and they ban sales of alcohol... it was seriously locked in a metal cage at all the stores. This was in bangkok. It was flowing as usual in Phuket.

Apparently they can get a little stabby and shooty during election days if they get full of chang. sweet sweet chang.

/fell in love with ice cold sang som in those two weeks
//wish that and chang were available here... singha doesn't do it for me.

On paper, Thaksin sounds like a Good Pro-Western Leader. However the Thais have a genuine respect of their king, and trust him more to be a good leader. To (again) Western people it doesn't run with the popular government idea, but then again World != Western Culture and Western Culture != Best For Everyone.

2008-11-20 12:07:51 PM
funny thing about "That's a moray!"
Thait people, mostly women, have taken to saying odd western sayings, but completely getting them wrong (ie engrish) so they keep saying Dezmoray to reply to things that have happened to their friends.

I believe "dead" is a favorite adjective. awww A nii dead narak!

awww this is dead cute...

BTW they lock up the booze because they are such alchies and the idea of a free day off is too much for them, most would drink all day the night before and during the election day and not turn up!

But then again, I never had trouble finding booze no matter if it was an election or Buddhist holiday...

that was another reason I heard as well. Either way, the irish gent I met at the hotel bar and I found an open bar just around the corner from the hotel that had no problem taking our money :)

I preferred the Chang over Singha also, but I was later told Chang was only for truck drivers and poor people. Ah well, I guess they don't recognize a good thing we they drink it. It couldn't be my bad taste.

I agree with some of his policy, like Health Care and Microcredit, but don't use word good Pro-Western so loosely. Thaksin is corrupted as sin.

I know it's hard to imagine in the west, but vote-buying and intimidation in local election is very real in Thailand.
