"It's horrible. They have to choose among their children," says Wolff, whose nonprofit group was formed to fight childhood malnutrition. "They try to keep them alive by feeding them, but sometimes they make the decision that this one has to go."

kids can barely afford to eat? right. let's have another one or four. that'll make things more interesting.

Raj Patel, author of "Stuffed and Starved: The Hidden Battle for the World Food System," says the right to food should be seen as a human right. But, he says, powerful corporate food distributors control too much of the world's food supply to ensure a robust global food supply.

Quick quiz: Which of these nations have suffered famine in the 20th Century?

A) The United States
B) The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics
C) The People's Republic of China

Here's a thought (someone's probably already said this but...) maybe if people who can't afford to feed themselves decided to stop having kids, there wouldn't be so many hungry kids

"You want to help world hunger? Stop sending them food. Don't send them another bite, send them U-Hauls. Send them a guy that says, 'You know, we've been coming here giving you food for about 35 years now and we were driving through the desert, and we realized there wouldn't BE world hunger if you people would live where the FOOD IS! YOU LIVE IN A DESERT!! UNDERSTAND THAT? YOU LIVE IN A FARKING DESERT!! NOTHING GROWS HERE! NOTHING'S GONNA GROW HERE! Come here, you see this? This is sand. You know what it's gonna be 100 years from now? IT'S GONNA BE SAND!! YOU LIVE IN A FARKING DESERT! We have deserts in America, we just don't live in them, assholes!'"

Every time an American bites down on a steak or hamburger, they're contributing to global hunger, Roberts says. As other countries become more affluent, they're copying our meat-heavy diet. The problem: It takes so much grain and other resources to produce meat, he says.

Great...blame America...again. I knew we, as Americans, would be to blame...damn liberal media.

To that end, I propose we "accidently" drop chemicals over the population that "just happen" to cause infertility and sterility in both guys and gals...either that or use the "gay ray" to make them all homo's!! (just kidding about the gay ray, the military couldn't get it to work...so don't flame me please)

Speaking about food, I went to eat Mexican today. I specifically told the waiter that I did NOT want white onions in my tacos. When I get my order, the first thing I do is look in my tacos and what do I see? WHITE ONIONS! I couldn't eat that crap. I had a meeting with some clients right after lunch and I didn't want to have onion-breath.

I wish those Haitian attention-whores would stop feeling sorry for themselves. Food problems exist everywhere. Suck it up.

2008-11-18 05:08:09 PM
The ones with the most food are generally smart enough not to have a litter of children. Funny how that works.

2008-11-18 05:09:16 PM
It's sad, sure. So, go help them you selfish bastard.

As for me, I think the best-possible course of action is to allow the problem to sort itself out.

Why do bleeders always think everyone ELSE has to take up their cause d'jour?

While response to Ishmael was mostly very positive, Quinn inspired a great deal of controversy with his claim (most explicitly discussed in the appendix section of The Story of B) that since population growth is a function of food supply, food aid to impoverished nations merely puts off and dramatically worsens a massive population-environment crisis.
...
He suggests that current population growth is unsustainable both for human beings and other species, and that apparently benevolent policies now will wreak havoc when considered from a longer-term view...Quinn has also suggested that the low fertility rates of developed nations are irrelevant as counter-evidence to his thesis, because the growing food production of developed nations is what is driving population growth in the Third World.
...
His argument is simple: more food, more humans. Not necessarily more humans in Nebraska, for example, but wherever the extra food from Nebraska is going. His argument rests on the physical fact that more food eaten directly translates to more human mass. He specifically states that starvation in problem areas is not necessary provided the extra humans are moved to areas that can sustain them. He objects to food aid that simply keeps an already unsustainable population growing.

There is no global food shortage, there are just parts of the world that have more people than the environment can maintain, or areas where the people aren't civilized enough to make it work. Agent Smith was right about us.

2008-11-18 05:15:03 PM
I'm not worried. There are lots of fat rich people near where I live. I plan on eating them if food becomes scarce.

And technology or disease (or both) will take out a chunk of the problem, either through better distribution tech, better farm tech; or a new pandemic disease that rips through the world.

I'm not really heartless, but along with all this food aid has got to come reproductive education, and condoms, lots and lots of condoms.

2008-11-18 05:22:23 PM
Well at least it's not the corrupt governments of those countries stealing the billions in food and aid from the last 25 years.

It's also not from teaching that birth control is a sin.

What could it be?

FTA: Every time an American bites down on a steak or hamburger, they're contributing to global hunger, Roberts says.

The U.S. is a net food exporter. The largest in the world. In other words, the U.S. produces much more food than it consumes. We feed more of the world for free than any other nation.

Not only that, but U.S. native birth rate is generally at or below replacement level. In other words, we aren't the ones breeding like farking rabbits.. The only reason the U.S. population increases year by year is because of immigration.

Blaming world hunger on the U.S. is just downright bizarre.

FTA:
"If the rest of the world were to eat like we do, the planet would collapse," Roberts says.

Yep. And if the rest of the world would make use of their farmable land like the U.S. does, and only breed at or below replacement rate (which means population shrinks or stays steady instead of increasing) like the U.S does, then there would be no problem whatsoever.
