Recently swapped the pads and front rotors on my 3 Sport GT, and was dismayed at how many of the parts were stamped FoMoCo.

Still a great car...

Tresser: -1 for stealing headline

Yeah, the admins are doing less than a stellar job picking headlines lately. I don't know if there are some newb up there green lighting, but some of them are terrible, spelling mistakes, headlines that while funny really don't have anything to do with the article. A sure fire funny headline including workable fark meme gets passed up for some line by line quote from the article itself, that isn't even funny.

It's a shame, the Mazda relationship was the best move Ford has made in the last 10 years. I would have prefered that they merge rather than weaken a stratgic alliance that has help both of them. Unfortunately with credit markets as they are, cash flow beats out longer term goals.

Actually, it was Ford's deep pockets that allowed Mazda to create those cool cars and revive the wankel engine.

Ford is really on Edge financially at the moment and the sale of their stake in Mazda is yet another indication of how times are forcing them to Explore options they never would have considered 6 months ago.

2008-11-18 01:58:49 PM
Doesn't sound like this means much. Ford is still going to be the largest shareholder of Mazda, they will still share platforms (Mazda6/Fusion, Mazda3/Focus, etc.).

Hopefully this will lead to Mazda ditching their versions of the Escape and Ranger, which are the only vehilces in their lineup I'd actually avoid. And maybe they can bring back a manual transmission in the 6-cylinder Mazda6...

I'd say that's the Maverick thing to do. They can't always live life on the Edge like your on some Freestyle Excursion through the Galaxy.

"zoomzoom" is second only to mcdonald's "badap ba da da" on my hate-list.

yes, i KNOW they're mnemonic devices; it's why i loathe them all the more.

and i wanted to beat that discheveldly dressed-up irish 10yearold that says the "zoomzoom" the first time i saw it, and each of the thousands of times i've been unable to avoid it since.

The 6 wagon was discontinued, I'm guessing because of the 5.

I bought a Mazda5 earlier this year, and I love it. Functionality of a minivan, but handles and corners like a sports sedan...

stewbert: The 6 wagon was discontinued, I'm guessing because of the 5.

IMO discontinuing the 6 wagon was a terrible move. We had an '06 and it was a great car.

When we found out our 2nd kid was actually going to be a 2nd and 3rd kid, we looked at the 5 and found it unsuitable due to the absurd vestigal 3rd row of seats. We had to sell the 6 wagon and get a minivan instead.

If I were considering the 5 or the 6 Wagon I would look for a bargain on the last of the 6's. A cool-looking station wagon and great to drive (get the stick or the manumatic). What a great car!

So, in order to save their company, Ford sold one of the few brands they own that actually produces a good car.

And we should give these guys our money?

Most platforms were designed jointly or exclusively by Mazda(I believe the 6 is one of the exclusive for Mazda, the 3 shares mostly with the Focus)

/too bad, it was a productive partnership for both

Ford never owned Mazda, they merely had a controlling stake in Mazda. Ford needs cash badly, Mazda stocks are still worth something, so Ford sells enough to raise a few hundred million but retains enough stock to still be a minority shareholder, so they can continue to share engines, platforms, and technology.

I'd say that Ford is doing what's right.

The Ford Fusion / Mercury Milan / Lincoln MKZ were all derived from the 6 platform, much like the Focus was derived from the 3.

I drive a Mazda 6 and love it. I'm a very tall guy as well and have plenty of leg room. Plus, its zippy as hell. And people always like the split color interior when they get it.

Mazdaspeed6, god I love this car and it's not even snowed yet.
I still love explaining to people that no, it's not a V8 or V6, just a 4 banger.
The lady has a Mazda3, which we may trade in for a mazdaspeed3.

I've never had anyone sit in any of our mazda's that wasn't very impressed, especially after hearing how much we paid for them.

I hope for Ford's sake that they can continue to benefit from Mazda, because Mazda's doin it right.

The Fiesta is listed on Wikipedia as a related model to the Mazda2. So I was partially right.

The cars that aren't for heterosexuals are SUVS and Convertibles. That's about it.

2004 Mazda 3 here, 50,000km on it.. not a single thing is wrong with it, it drives like new.

And I drive this car hard.. used it for TSD Rallies on long forgotten British Columbia logging roads, I've gone over tree stumps with it and smashed the skidplate to bits. The car lets you drive it really hard, its responsive, it clips apexes, it handles at speed like a car should.

Too bad Ford.. the North American Focus is an anemic neutered car, what else you got? The Fusion.. ha.. that ugly wagon/truck thing?.. I guess the 150 is doing ok still..

Don't want a ford...

would buy another mazda in seconds.

Mazda 6 Speed pls...

Wife had a 98 626. We moved on to a 1993 Mx-6 coupe and kept that for 12 years and replaced is with an '05 Mazda6. Love that car, but I drool at the new '09 Mazda6 but can't bring myself to take on a car payment...just not worth it.

Count me in the crowd who has always thought that Ford benefited more from this relationship than Mazda did. I have always loved Mazda cars. MazdaSpeed3 for the win!

Damned stupid, remarkably shortsighted decision on Ford's part.

Mazda = all kinds of win.
