I'd laugh my ass off if Madden made the checks out to:

HB #32
CB #24
QB #16
C #00

etc

I hope EA goes bankrupt.

This won't do it, but maybe their crappy games and decisions will.

2008-11-17 04:01:10 PM
Are the players names actually in the game? Or is it just QB #16? If it's the latter, I don't see what case they have. They aren't using your name or your likeness in the game, what's the problem?

If they win, what would that do for the college games where they do the exact same thing to avoid breaking any NCAA rules?

2008-11-17 04:03:22 PM
Um, maybe I'm missing something, but EA is a third party in this suit. It's the players union that has to pay the fine since the union signed off on the deal.

It would be nice if EA and John Madden pressured the union into giving fair representation and compensation to the retired players, but it's not their responsibility. It's the responsibility of the union and the players in the union and considering how often they're willing to throw their own teammates under the bus, I highly doubt that the multi-millionaires playing today give a damn about the guys who played before them.

The article isn't really clear on the details, although at one point they complain that someone could figure out who the player was. I guess if they needed to "figure it out" it wasn't obvious.

Probably WR #81, QB #9, etc.

Well, yeah, but that wasn't what I'm referring to in this case. There have been quite a few receivers who used 81, and quite a few QBs who used #9.

For example, Art Monk wore #81 and Sonny Jurgensen wore #9. They are both in the Hall of Fame.

I don't think anyone that has seen you post thought you were thinking "Redskins" with that post.

BTW, I think that it sucks that they're not getting paid but think that Madden has no reason to mention it because all it's going to do is call attention to him, which is stupid, just as it was stupid for people to get mad at Jordan over Nike using sweatshops to make Air Jordans.

Isn't that code the same as the previous year? I mean, I've heard some stories about how they just update a few things here and there.

EwokHunter: Isn't that code the same as the previous year? I mean, I've heard some stories about how they just update a few things here and there.

They update the game about as much as you'd expect for a single company that has to turn it around in less than a year. People give them a bunch of crap for this which has always made me scratch my head. Most games get way more time in development than this.

Should they eventually skip a year to work on real improvements? Probably. But it isn't gonna happen, which is why sports games tend to evolve slowly IMHO.

This is my understanding of the whole issue:

Its the NFLPA's doing. Basically, the NFLPA's licensing agreements allow them to license all their members' names and likenesses. (Retired players can still remain members of the NFLPA.) Doing that, however, would mean that the active players would receive the same compensation as the retired players.

Since the NFLPA doesn't give a shiat about the retired players, they didn't license their likenesses to EA, thus securing more money in residuals for the active players. Thus EA payed slightly less for likeness rights (since the deal wasn't as sweet), yet the NFLPA and the active players pocketed more money from the deal.

He plays like a man I knew, tough, kind, liked puppies, dalmations, cute dogs with their little spots everywhere. Firemen! Our boys who battle the flames are great. I had a puppy once as a child, but my mother said he left one day after I saw him playing out in the street. Firefighters are the unsung heroes of the nation. These men and women fight fires so we can play football. Dalmations!

John Madden and Terry Bradshaw are the reasons that I stopped watching football 20 years ago. After those two windbags expire/retire I may give football another chance.

tdpatriots12: People give them a bunch of crap for this which has always made me scratch my head. Most games get way more time in development than this.

Most games are relatively original.

Madden could easily get away with a release once every two or three years, as long as they can have more updates of team rosters (and maybe release roster update disks).
Madden rarely, if ever, delivers something groundbreaking or spectacularly different from previous years. The only reason people keep buying is to get updated teams.

tdpatriots12: Should they eventually skip a year to work on real improvements? Probably. But it isn't gonna happen, which is why sports games tend to evolve slowly IMHO.

Well, it would've had a better chance at improving if they hadn't completely bought out all rights to every NFL image and all the player names, etc. That way other companies could bring in more new ideas and then there would actually be a choice.

I mean, yeah, you can still get the other games and their different perspectives on the game, but people want to get to play as their team, with the players they like watching, not fake character football players. (yeah, they're all technically characters, but you know what I mean). I don't want to play as the Seattle Seagulls with WRs D. Twig and whatnot. And if there's no real market for the non-real football games for other companies, then it's going to kill the evolution/growth of the game.

/then again, this year I don't want to play as the Seahawks either
//also, I'm still waiting for a hybrid GTA style sandbox game and Madden where you get to navigate your way throughout the week...you have to drive to practice through traffic, escape cops, etc, take flights (except in the game you'd get to fly the plane or maybe you sit in the back and you get to go to a poker minigame or something)

only for current players. The legend teams or historic teams or whatever are ID'd by position/number, exactly like the NCAA games.

SobrietyFighter: btw, madden does have names, while the ncaa sports series have numbers...

Not all of the "historical teams" in the history of Madden games have used full names, or even partial names.

IIRC, the "All-Time Cowboys" squad has consistently only had numbers instead of names.

evolve means that you don't just pick something from around the beginning and something from present and say that it represents the evolution. Go year by year and there are very few things changed. And it's all mostly graphics anyway.

I'm just saying, it took something like 2k sports to bring in something weird and new like first person mode, which led to Madden finally putting in something like superstar mode, which, IMO, is the most fun way to play by yourself, and if you play as a WR, helps you to understand why WRs are such attention whores.

It's not so much the gameplay, necessarily, it's how you go about it.

You underestimate NHL Hitz 2002. That game is pure sex. People on fire, group celebrations, checking through the glass as a regularity, people with shark heads... it's a classic.

I don't know how I'd feel about the GTA/Madden game. Does it still have a good football sim? Otherwise I'll just play GTA and drive up to the stadium and then pop in Madden.

What you are describing sounds like Adam "Pacman" Jones 09.

It sounds pretty fun but I can't voluntarily buy a game that uses the z where an s should go to try to be cool. Maybe I can borrow it and copy it to my xbox.

F*ck Pacman, you could go all out Mike Vick, run a friggin' dog fighting business if you want. Or go Manning, where your offseason schedule is: "Film commercial in NYC," "Film commercial in LA," "Film commercial in Indy," "Film commercial and appear on SNL in NYC."

Can someone who owns a copy of Madden PLEASE stop by and answer the Farking question - does the game list names of players on the historic teams or not?

Anyone?

/please list which game year.

2008-11-17 06:52:21 PM
Let's say that when you log in to the game you can decide how much you want to play. Like there's a checklist where everything's checked, and you can just play football if you want by deselecting everything else, or you can play the GTA/RPG type thing by itself. Or the minigames.

/this would probably take forever to create and require more space than currently available on any disc format
