Oh well, so much for going down to AC.

Yeah, that's what I want, to hang out with a bunch of harridan crones banging the slot machines with a Marlboro hanging out of their mouths in perpetuity.

SEXY!

haha awesome

the indoor smoking bans have had an unintended consequence in my area, local VFW's are having to quit their BINGO games because no one is showing up since they cant smoke, which causes them to lose precious fund-raising money

I am at least somewhat proud of people for cutting back on gambling. You kind of get sick of hearing stories about people who don't pay their bills because they outspend their income on shiat they don't need. Now if we could only get businesses to think in a similar way.

AC is overrated anyways. I'd rather save up and take a trip for the Vegas experience than got to Atlantic City. At least Vegas is more walkable (?) in a safe way.

I say by April (again).

I, for one, am happy about this.

It's just not the same at AC without a drink in one hand, a cig in the other, and one of my free fingers betting on the pennies.

I live near AC, where it has a largely-ignored facet to the issue: Labor unions and employee health. You can debate whether 2nd-hand smoke causes cancer, but there is no denying that working a full shift in a smoke-thick room is bad for the eyes sinuses, etc. You get unions involved because someone is fired for being excessively sick due to a hazardous work environment, the whole thing just becomes a mess.

Saying "well then you don't have to work there" does not fly in the legal world of OSHA and safe workplace laws. You can't hire someone and then expose them to unreasonable risk.

AC pretty safe, just don't take a stroll around the walk way late at night and some places in Vegas you isn't safe either late at night

TRaditionally that's been true, but not this time. Gambling is way down, and Vegas has taken a tremendous hit. Gambling used to be a recession-proof industry, but apparently this here recession is a tad stronger than the others.

2008-11-16 10:55:59 AM
AC has actually spent lots of money cleaning up it's act the last few years. There are now great restaurants, nightclubs, high-end shopping, and better casino experiences to be had. Unfortunately for them the gaming industry as a whole is hurting pretty bad, and AC is feeling the worst of it. If you enjoy that sort of thing it's a good time to take advantage of bargains. The casinos are practically giving away rooms right now.

Gamings actually been hurting for a few years. It started declining well before the recession. That being said, this will only make things worse for them.

How about banning gambling altogether (No I don't mean lottery tickets or Bingo)?

Why not lottery and bingo too? Those games benefit the operators just as much as slots or roulette do. Or those are ok since are.. what? More socially acceptable to you?

I get that many people don't like gambling and that's fine. Don't gamble. It's not like anyone is ever forced to get in the car and drive to the nearest casino...

If your argument is that people get addicted and it ruins lives/families, I guess you're also 100% for banning alcohol, right? Booze not only ruins more families/lives through addiction.. it also actively contributes to deaths of unrelated people. Porn probably needs banned too since people can get addicted to it and that can lead to families being torn apart.

This is so hilarious. Every piece of anti-smoking legislation I've seen in Missouri (even K.C.'s citizen-submitted ballot initiative which ran concurrently with the city council's version) has had a casino exception, pretty obviously because the casinos would Bring Down The Thunder. Do non-smokers just not go to casinos, or do they hate casino-goers and think that they should DIAF?

I live in a town that has a casino for every 30 people, something like that. And more opening up all the time. All the restaurants have casinos in them. A gas station closes up, it's reincarnated a month later as a casino.

And it's not even real gaming, it's some retarded casino-lite version where you can play poker on machines, some places have live poker games, but no place has real gaming machines like in Vegas. But they must be real money-makers, because every vacant building will now become a casino.

I don't go to the casinos, so what's my problem? They are nasty, smoke-filled pits that attract the people who can't afford to gamble in the first place. It makes this town, otherwise a decent place full of history and interesting people, a mecca for trashy dumbasses.

2008-11-16 11:12:04 AM
People want to gamble more, if anything. Just read something about all the real estate fail going on in Coral Gables, FL - the only industries doing well involve booze and slots.

And that's a pretty effective argument for smoking bans in bars, casinos, etc. When they put it into effect here the labor health issue was barely a side-note, with the emphasis on customers being able to enjoy a smoke-free atmosphere. That pissed me off because, as I said, if there really were a demand for non-smoking bars, someone would just open one by choice. Since the majority were in favor of the ban, the place should be packed 24/7. The reality is that people just like to vote for any anti-smoking legislation even when it doesn't effect them.

When I would make regular trips to AC in the 90s, we always went to Bally's because they had two-floor casino: half smoking, half non-smoking. Worked just fine.

And there ya go... problem solved. I'd "wager" that Bally's would have eventually made the whole casino non-smoking if the take from the non-smoking floor outweighed the stink floor by a noticeable margin.

downtownkid: Unfortunately for them the gaming industry as a whole is hurting pretty bad, and AC is feeling the worst of it.

Part of AC's problem is that casinos have opened in PA. There used to be busloads of seniors traveling to AC everyday from where I live. Not anymore. There is one casino within 10 minutes to where I live; another within 35 minutes. They're packed all the time with people who would otherwise have spent their money in AC.

Yeah, my in-laws love to gamble and smoke. They dragged us to a Casino in their home town. Now my wife, their daughter, has asthma and we lasted about 1 hr. before insisting they take us home.

The nickel slot area was just disgusting.

The three major bars here in my town are non-smoking and business is doing well for them. All the skanky people go to the low rent bars, where the meth is, and stay out of these places. The rest of the non-skanky smokers just step outside for a moment.

This is a small town, though, so the market is a little different than urban areas.

The truth is smoking has been on the decline, but recessions are good for death merchants, so I would expect to see an increase here soon.
