jbuist: someonelse: jbuist: Who Dey: Plus, the misspelling absolutely kills me. It's hilarious!

"Muslem?" Is that the mis-spelling?

Muslem is an accepted spelling.

By whom?

"muslem." Dictionary.com Unabridged (v 1.1). Random House, Inc. 12 Nov. 2008. .

Both of my dictionaries only have "muslim" and "moslem." I didn't know "muslem" was even a variant. But at least I have the capacity to acquire new knowledge, so I'm still gonna point and laugh at him.

This guy may still be a moron, but it appears CBS 21 is doing the misspellings. According to the article, "anyboyd" was a spoken word. Maybe he mispronounced it, i can't crank the volume at work. Don't reporters usually use (sic) then?

Not really. Some of the same people who drafted the Second Amendment were among those who had previously drafted the Treason Clause in the original Constitution (new window). The idea of the Second Amendment was to facilitate the organization of the militia, to allow the people to protect themselves from Indians, Brits, French, Canadians, Spaniards, and reverse vampires.

Peter_B_Risen: Most gun enthusiasts are upset that Obama will probably reinstate the assault weapons ban. The problem is that in the last 5-6 years AR-15 style predator/target rifles have become one of the most popular selling guns in the US (and they are being bought by hunters, not terrorists) There are three companies in the US that exclusively sell these rifles and are doing very well and employing hundreds of people (including Rock River Arms in Obamas state of Illinois). The assault weapons ban will put all of these people out of work.

The assault weapons ban was ineffectual and stupid, but I sure don't know anyone that hunts with an AR-15 -- and I know plenty of people that own them. Might make a good gun for boars. . and other long pig sized animals, but that's about it.

Personally, while I think assault weapons are a little over-the-top, I still recognize that the AWB is an infringement on a Constitutional freedom.

The problem here is similar to the problem we have with drugs, it's not so much the object itself we're afraid of, it's the knowledge that they could be used destructively by irresponsible and criminally-minded people.

The solution? Background checks.

Not perfect, but it's the happiest medium we have so far, in my opinion.

Will a couple of hunting rifles really protect you from smart bombs and cruise missiles?

You assume our government would use our military and technology against the general population as they do in Iraq. This would never be the case. The very threat of sporadic, insurgent-like attacks is enough. Regardless, would the David vs. Goliath argument justify suppressing more citizen's rights?

From The Army Times
Beginning Oct. 1 for 12 months, the 1st BCT will be under the day-to-day control of U.S. Army North, the Army service component of Northern Command, as an on-call federal response force for natural or manmade emergencies and disasters, including terrorist attacks...They may be called upon to help with civil unrest and crowd control or to deal with potentially horrific scenarios such as massive poisoning and chaos in response to a chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or high-yield explosive, or CBRNE, attack.

Pincy: This is what gives you gun nuts a bad name. Obama is not going to take away your right to own a gun. Your over reaction is making you look like the same paranoid tin foil hat wearing conspiracy theorists you like to mock so much on the left.

Correct. He isn't going to take away your right to own a gun.

Having said that, this is what he has planned on doing:

1. Reinstating the failed Assault Weapons Ban. You know, the ban that had *NO* effect whatsoever, other than increasing the price of pre-ban firearms.

2. Closing down the non-existent "gun show loophole". In other words, he is going to require that you get government permission to buy from a private citizen. This would *ONLY* apply at gunshows, though, because federal law permits you to sell your private guns without going through NICS. It's a camel's nose, though, with the long range goal of requiring all firearms transfers to have government approval.

3. He wants to make guns "childproof". I don't know why, because any method used to make them child proof wouldn't work in keeping teenagers from using them (ie., heavy springs, complex locks, etc.), and in 2005 there were a mere 59 accident firearms deaths involving kids 12 and under. Some fraction, perhaps even the majority, would involve an ADULT handling the firearm, and the child being killed (ie., the proverbial rare hunting accident). Given the huge supply of guns out there already, and the vanishingly small amount this might help.

Those are just the things he admits to wanting on his website. At least two of those three are a non-starter, and quite possibly unconstitutional.

If he presses for these, or even just signs them into law, he will certainly lose Congress in 2010, and probably lose the White House in 2012 if the renewed AWB doesn't have a sunset provision.

That way they eventually just assume everyhouse has one.

I can see Obama if not going after some increased measure of gun control or registration making it a law that all armed citizens need to post signs to that effect outside their homes. I can't tell who that would be worse for, those with guns, or those without.

This man is why everyone thinks you're crazy. Denounce him forcefully.

Most of us do.

Then again I think a national firearm license wouldn't be a bad idea. Just base it on the current driver's license:

1) Valid in all 50 states allowing me to carry/operate my firearm/vehicle in public.

2) Granted to anyone that can pass a trivial test and pay a nominal fee to their local state every X years.

/not that worried about Obama/Congress making a grab for my guns
//bigger fish to fry

National firearm license would be a nice way to drum up some new tax dollars thats about it. Waste of time. How about a alcohol license, tobacco license, fast food license, license license...

In a roundabout way, the first AWB may have made it impossible for a second:
a. AWB created huge demand among many who didn't previously care
b. Sales of AR15's etc skyrocketed since ban, putting them "in common use"
c. Heller 2008 specifically forbids banning a general class of weapon that is "in common use."
