(Contra Costa Times)   Oakland Raiders offensive coordinator Greg Knapp stripped of play-calling duties. Raiders fans stunned to learn that plays were actually called and not just made up in the huddle, sandlot-style   (contracostatimes.com) divider line

I think he just misunderstood. I don't think he thought offensive as having the ball so much as offensive as in loathsome or causing offense.

I understand some people need a job, but why the hell would anyone WANT to work for Al Davis? He needs to do what Stenibrenner did and step down in his old and crazy state of mind.

Knapp was absolutely god-awful when he was with the niners. How in the world this guy got another opportunity is beyond me. It would be like Canada hiring George Bush to be their president. Man, the NFL really is a retread league.

Of course, the Brewers just hired Ken Macha, a guy who singlehandedly cost the A's the 2003 LDS and the 2004 and 2005 divisions, so I guess baseball isn't much better.

What the NFL needs is an influx of qualified OCs and DCs. It is like a labor shortage... the scrubs get passed around between teams until they either get in a system where their flaws can be covered by someone else's successes (terrible OC with a lights out defense) or they drop back down to the college game.

Consider, if you will, that nobody with any brains, talent, or a shred of sanity, would work for Al Davis. Knapp's resume probably stated "still breathing and willing to work for Al Davis" and that was enough to get hired.

Well that should take care of all of their problems. Now they're on their way to the Superbowl Big Game.

Why in the hell do people hire this guy as an OC? I watched this man call plays for 2-3 years in Atlanta. It's like he calls the total opposite of what he should call.

I want to be the bottlecap on this play

I'll see that playbook and counter with KC's playbook until 3 weeks ago:
1st down: dive up the LG's butt
2nd down: dive up the RG's butt
3rd down: swing pass to the line of scrimmage
4th down: punt.

It was not so affectionately called the R2P2 offense by Chiefs faithful

haha I love it. I think Al is starting to realize that the players Lane didn't want suck and so do the coaches Lane wanted to fire.

You give al to much credit. He is a great owner. Get over it.

When the Raiders got the ball you could take a knapp for the next 4 downs!

I wish he was in the NFC east(anywhere but DC). Thanks Al, Deangelo will make a great $400,000 nickleback.

Knapp was horrible in Atlanta. He acts like he's calling plays for the latest Madden video game. It was God-awful to watch for those few years he was here.

4NSpy: Did I tell you that your call on Steve Smith was right on the money---well done!
The Panthers played their worst game of the year and still won.
It may be really tough to get to 8-2 this week with the mighty Lions coming to town.

Hey, you can thank Al Davis and Dan Snyder for that one. I'd say Snyder is probably a close 2nd to Davis. The difference being Snyder isn't senile....yet

Why does Carolina have such an easy schedule?

It really isn't extremely easy, nor is it really hard. Their division got much tougher this season (falcons? wtf?), but the "tough games" on their schedule turned out to be against teams that are vastly underperforming.

The only real game they should be sweating out is the Giants in week 16, but if the Giants keep playing like they have it'll be against a team that doesn't care that much.

I hope this means something for the offense. Seriously, Oakland put up a big zero as far as performance goes in offense the last two weeks. The good news is at least the defense woke the hell up and actually killed a good number of drives.

2008-11-12 07:18:06 PM
The Raiders are averaging an NFL-low 13 points per game. Offensive coordinator really isn't an accurate job description. (There's nothing coordinated about the Raiders' offense.)

2008-11-12 08:06:38 PM
In the last 10 years, the Raiders have drafted only 12 offensive linemen, and 2 of their last five were from Weber State and Cornell. Maybe that's one of the reasons their offense sucks.

In addition, they've drafted about 30 DB's and WR's in the same time period.

It's fitting that the best player on the Raiders is one that you never hear about. You only hear about Corners when they get burned, or return picks for TD's.

You'd hear about him more if he had a name like "Champ". But that name just looks like hell to try to pronounce. Although, once you do pronounce it correctly, you probably feel pretty cool for pronouncing it correctly and should want to say it more.
