But if you don't develop your knights before bishops, you're screwed.

Is it some sort of requirement on Fark that every headline with the word "bishop" in it makes the same goddamn chess "joke"?

FTA: Auxiliary Bishop Robert Hermann of St. Louis said that "any one of us would consider it a privilege to die tomorrow -- to die tomorrow -- to bring about the end of abortion."

Well, why don't they give that a try and see if it works?

FTFA: Many bishops urged Catholics to make opposition to abortion a priority when they voted last week. But exit polls showed that Obama won 54 percent of the Catholic vote....

Eating food to sustain you and your family + having money to pay your bills so you can work >Telling other people they must have children.

...Auxiliary Bishop Robert Hermann of St. Louis said that "any one of us would consider it a privilege to die tomorrow -- to die tomorrow -- to bring about the end of abortion."

That's terrorist talk.

Obama administration enact proposed abortion rights legislation, they would see it as an attack on the church

No, an attack on the church would be revoking the tax exempt status of the church, because they are trying to stick their noses into politics a little too much.

Wikipedia entry (pops)

This has to pass. It would basically remove abortion from the hot-button issue list indefinitely.

Still being drafted last night, the bishops' statement is expected by church leaders to warn that the legislation would reduce religious freedom, make tax money available for abortions and alienate millions of Americans who oppose abortion.

REDUCE RELIGIOUS FREEDOM? Christ, these f*cking Catholics have been hanging around the Evangelicals for too long. I honestly think it's no surprise that abortion is the single issue that has driven Christians closer to the behaviour of Al Qaeda than anything else. So much of the rhetoric is morally absolute zero-compromise, it's no wonder some people started shooting doctors and bombing clinics (and just because Eric Rudolph is in jail, don't think it won't ever happen again).

However, kudos to the growing movement of abortion opponents who realize that the best way to reduce the number of abortions is more sex education and access to birth control. You guys get it.

2008-11-12 06:27:31 AM
if the Democratic-controlled Congress and the incoming Obama administration enact proposed abortion rights legislation, they would see it as an attack on the church

In that case, a few well-placed smart bombs should clear up any mis-understanding about what a REAL attack looks like....

Restrict religious freedom? No, not even close.

Make tax money available for abortions? So? My tax dollars go to fight wars and a whole bunch of other things that I don't agree with. Guess they'll just have to suck it up like I do.

Alienate millions of Americans who oppose abortion? No one's forcing them to have an abortion if they don't want one. Besides they deserve alienation if they think they can dictate their religious beliefs via the law.

Edsel: You taking bets?

This thing has been knocking around for at least twenty years. It is an expression of the most "liberal" position on abortion, that of Planned Parenthood, NARAL, NOW, etc. It most certainly does not represent the clearly expressed views of a large majority of Americans. There isn't anything close to a majority in Congress that would support this, for a variety of reasons, not least of which is its assault on federalism.

So, yeah, I'll take a bet.

2008-11-12 08:09:11 AM
Legislating the scripture would be just about the biggest threat to religious freedom imaginable.

Well, you've at least inspired me to write my congressman and senators to support this bill.

2008-11-12 08:36:23 AM
For those in support of FOCA, why is it a good thing?

15 year olds getting abortions on demand is a good thing? They can't even get their ears pierced. Or should we allow minors to obtain other medical procedures without parental notification?

Partial birth abortions would be legalized. Is that a good thing? When is the murder of a viable child ok?

Taxpayer money going to abortion clinics is a good thing?

FOCA wants to nullify any judicially upheld restrictions on abortion. It is wrong.

2008-11-12 08:44:55 AM
I voted for Obama, but I will be outraged if he wants to pass this legislation. This is an awful bill.

The federal and state restrictions on late term abortion are absolutely sound and should not be overturned.

The local girl that died after ODing on meth to try and kill the fetus might still be alive. Good thing.

fenianfark: Partial birth abortions would be legalized. Is that a good thing?

No such procedure. However, Dilation and extraction is sometimes the safest procedure to terminate life threatening pregnancies.

fenianfark: Taxpayer money going to abortion clinics is a good thing?

Yes.

No it's not.

Polls have shown that most Americans want to keep abortion legal. Its the only the fringe Right (the same fringe that wants to restrict birth control) that wants to make it illegal - because that's the best way to punish women for having sex.

fenianfark: For those in support of FOCA, why is it a good thing?

Actually, yes, in many states they can get their ears pierced without parental signature/approval. Otherwise, straw-man argument.

Partial birth abortions would be legalized. Is that a good thing? When is the murder of a viable child ok?

There is no such thing as "partial birth abortions". Any abortion (such as dilation and extraction) done late enough that the baby is viable is due to life-threatening conditions, usually for the mother, sometimes for the child.

When is the murder of an adult woman okay?

Taxpayer money going to abortion clinics is a good thing?

Yes. Safe and done by professionals is always better than back-alleys and home-remedies. And if you think by banning abortion you stop those back-alleys and home-remedies, you're delusional. Having options helps. Not taking them away.

FOCA wants to nullify any judicially upheld restrictions on abortion. It is wrong.

Most of those 'judicially upheld restrictions' are still being fought or, like the so-called partial birth ban, are medically wrong. Why is science wrong?

/I know, I know, don't take the bait
//Can't help it
///A friend of mine was date-raped as a teen and her fundie parents refused to let her a) have an abortion or b) even give up the baby for adoption (state where parental consent is necessary for both). The 'date' got off without so much as an official reprimand. My friend killed herself rather than have a child of rape.

I heard one of the bishops last night on NPR. He sounded quite reasonable until he started talking about how this issue is a "moral absolute" and there was "no possibility of compromise on this issue."

Translated: we get to have our own way, and everybody has to go along with it! And if you don't like it, we'll, we'll, we'll kick you out of our Magic Sky Wizard Club tree house! So just shuddup and obey Catholic dogma, heretics!

Fark these guys. Let 'em run off and join the Taliban.

2008-11-12 09:23:15 AM
The bishops also say they're afraid Catholic hospitals would be required to perform abortions or lose their federal funding.

Sounds good to me. Besides, taking money from a government that allows a practice they say is wrong is pretty hypocritical.

Sleeping Monkey: Polls have shown that most Americans want to keep abortion legal. Its the only the fringe Right (the same fringe that wants to restrict birth control) that wants to make it illegal - because that's the best way to punish women for having sex.

That's an extraordinarily simplistic expression of the polling results. The truth is far more nuanced than that.

According to a few fundies I've had discussions with, that would be counted as a "win".

Her parents were pretty hung up over the suicide part, but yeah. The feeling I got was far more relief than sadness her daughter had been driven to that point.

Then again, any real sadness on their part would've meant admitting that they'd had a huge part in why she'd chosen that route...

// actually had one nutjob tell me that it was a good thing for women to bleed to death in the street. I hope he dies in a fire.

... you know, nothing brings all the misogynists to the yard like abortion debates. What the hell.
