And what are these people going to do when gas increases to $3 or $4+ per gallon after the market recognizes an OPEC reduction in output?

FAIL

Are you serious? Here are some answers:

Families living in the northern states
Farmers
People with RVs, boats, and trailers
Contractors
People who like to travel far and value safety over cost
Surfers - 4x4 is necessity on the beach
Off roaders
Many more . . . . . .

I recall a comic strip about this a few weeks ago, be nice to see it again. It was a perfect example of this very news.

Low gas prices now mean even higher gas prices down the road.

Enjoy it while it lasts, or even better, save it up. You're going to need it.

Genevieve Marie: This is ridiculous. We're about to start bailing out auto companies who heavily invested themselves in creating SUVs because there was a public demand for them, ignoring the long term effect on energy consumption. The government also ignored it, refusing to regulate vehicle size at all, and Japanese cars with good fuel economy took over the market for predictable reasons. Now we have major businesses in crisis and we're heavily dependent on foreign oil- all for lack of some kind of coherent energy policy. The first energy crisis was in the seventies; not planning for it in the long term was a massive policy failure.

No need to regulate anything, actually the opposite should take place. Stop helping failing companies and let them wither on the vine; they'll serve as examples for others.

The best lessons are the ones that hurt the most. We'll be better for it in the end.

BobtheFascist: Gas is cheaper, but dealers are loaded with SUV's with low price tags. Some new, some trade-in's. If you have a need for an SUV (Yes, some people really do) now is the time to buy one.

I'm one of them, unfortunately. I have a gaggle of children and in-laws living with me and the last thing I need to explain to a cop if I get pulled over is why I have 3 mexican kids crammed into the trunk of my itty bitty Honda & 4 bouncing around in the back... At least I can get a 3rd row in an SUV and they all have seat belts to hold them down.

netweavr: When the Vets come home you're going to see an even bigger spike in car/home purchases all across the board.

Interesting theory but the Vets have been in costant rotations back since the war began. Though you might start seeing some 19 year old privates driving cars worth less than 30 grand again...

We have not hit bottom yet, folks, so enjoy those gas prices while you can. You'd just better hope the dollar holds up the Yuan, because if it doesn't...the Chinese like gasoline, too, ya know? Won't be much value left in the US $ by the time Bush's cronies finish up the last two months of this smash and grab they're perpetrating. 7000 anyone?

UberDave: Pocket Ninja: This is a rare moment in time. Yesterday, I scaled the lofty, bubbling heights of the reclaimed landfill outside town and cast my eyes south, south to where the sun's trailing beams fell over huddled forest and trickling brook, curving subdivision and low strip mall. And there, along lighted path, I beheld the Hummer dealership on high, gleaming like Apollo's temple; and at its feet the waiting rows of Ford trucks and Chevy Tahoes. And above I viewed a vision of two crows circling in the sky, and the greater of the two did open his beaked maw and gas did fall from it, trickling to the earth in drops that trailed back to me along the sunlight's beam. Each drop smaller than the last, each drop a lower price, and when I did look again the crows had merged into a mighty Phoenix, ablaze with light and astride a chariot pulled by a fleet of Hummers while F150s and Tahoes careened beside, all brilliant and aflame in the bejeweled and oily sky. And so God has spoken through me, and so I will obey.

This just proves there's some messed up shiat in that damn landfill. You need to stay away from there man...

I laughed at PN's original post... but I laughed harder at this. :)

Yawn.

This is a troll attempt at a repeat of an article. This particular plant is one of only two plants equipped to build the Hybrid versions of these vehicles. I can only assume that the article is directed at unread jerk-offs who thrive on self-righteous indignation - and was certainly custom made for Fark as can be witnessed by the comments in this thread.

Also, folks, if I might suggest something: When you fill up, pretend that gas is $4 a gallon. Take your receipt and multiply the total amt of gas sold by 4 and subtract what you paid. Bill yourself that much and put it in a jar. You are going to need it within the next 6-8 months to offset what you'll be paying for gas by then. This will also help in keeping you in the 'GAS IS F'ING EXPENSIVE, F THIS I'M NOT DRIVING ANYWHERE I DON'T ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO' mindset that we as a country need to stay in or we'll never get to the point that alternative energy is readily available.

or... whatever.

jabbedxorz: I won't consider gas prices low until they get back to where they should be.

It should be $10 a gallon. Because cheap gas means we keep f*cking around, kissing Big Oil's ass and continuing to feel we have the luxury to stave off a very concerning future without alternatives.

The best part is because the demand for oil is going to go up, the price will increase as well. Usually I'd say let the idiots suffer, but thanks to them I'll be paying more at the pump soon.

I just bought an 08 Chevy 1500. With the V-8 it gets almost the same fuel economy as my beat up old S-10. And with the "tightness" in the market I got it for about a third off.

Now I'm having to get used to driving something much wider and longer than the old S-10. And with way too much power.

People never change.
So amusing.
Even the posts in thread show NOTHING has changed.
No new wisdom.
No enlightenment.
Peoples still believe in supply and demand where oil is concerned.
Peoples still believe the price of oil changes, not the amount you get changing with the value of the dollar.
An best of all, peoples that think they have ANY control.

No, nobody actually needs an SUV. Need to tow your boat? How often, once/twice a year? Rent a pickup for $20/hour. Need lots o' seats to haul the soccer team? Get a minivan. Need to go off road? Really? No, you don't. And if you really, really do, an old VW Beetle can go anywhere a Suburban with 4WD can.

They're just oversized, technologically primitive station wagons.

Genevieve Marie: TraeHova: History: it loves you... even if you don't love it back.

Was Jimmy Carter right? (Pops)

Good article.

Yes, this should have been a preventable crisis. Had those steps Carter took been made permanent, we'd be in a lot less trouble than we are now. Letting automakers get away with producing vehicles with such horrible fuel standards for so long was a big mistake, and the effects have been incredibly far reaching.

And yet I'd lay money that we have several people come in this thread and brag about how much gas their SUV takes and how it's ok that they use a vehicle with a V8 for normal city driving; after all, they can afford it! It's a little sickening.

I won't brag about how I can afford it(I almost couldn't), but I do drive a 97 Grand Marquis. It doesn't make economic sense to me to purchase a new or used car right now with better gas mileage, because the car payment + increased insurance premiums will cost me more than it does to fill it up twice a month, which I never do anyways.

Also, you try selling an 11 year old car with some of the worst depreciation of any vehicle around. Bluebook trade-in is only 1,025.

2008-11-11 03:46:53 PM
I drive a mid-sized crossover that gets 32MPG. As of yesterday I was officially getting twice as much gas for my dollar than I was 6 months ago. That means every tankfull costs me $28 less. Does this mean I am driving more to make up for it? Or that I am going to run out and buy a new pickup that only gets 15MPG? Hell no! That extra money is going into top-shelf single-malts and premium hand-rolled cigars - which I have been doing without :-). It's all about being a smart consumer. At least it will make the next 8 years more tolerable.

I'm looking at an SUV now. I can afford $4 a gallon, as my work is only a few miles from home. I need something to pull my boat, and I have two huge dogs who don't ride in the car well.

Even with an SUV, over the course of the year I most likely use less gas than someone driving a hybrid with a 20 mile commute, so please biatch at them before me.

Thanks.

BobtheFascist: Gas is cheaper, but dealers are loaded with SUV's with low price tags. Some new, some trade-in's. If you have a need for an SUV (Yes, some people really do) now is the time to buy one.

True. Shop around right you could probably get a great deal on a used SUV for about 8G, low mileage and excellent shape. Or spend about 22G on a Prius Hybrid, even with fuel savings, barring a major energy crisis (not even compared to the likes of the recent one) the SUV buyer may come out ahead for the life of the vehicle even weathering future fuel spikes.

I myself will be driving my current SUV into the ground, and hoping by then electrics will make a comeback. 8 year old Escalade with 120 thousand miles and still looks great, and so far only had to bring it to the shop to change the tires. Although knowing how to drive and some basic preventive checks when I change the oil helps with that.

/will miss the era of large vehicles
