Mayostard: I used to consider buying a Toyota as my next car, but their slogan "Moving Forward" (which was overused in every f*cking memo/email sent by managers at my old job... I mean, once every other sentence), and the Saved By Zero jingle, forced my hand towards Honda or Nissan.

Yeah, I'm petty.

Well I'm petty too cause I just bought a new Honda Civic and I was going to get a Corolla. Truly the commercial pissed me off that much.

trappedspirit: I thought their position in the charts determined them a good band a long time ago? Or is it just not cool to admit to liking them? I forget what it's like to have to appear cool.

*shrugs*

I listened to good music back then, so I wouldn't know.

The Fixx epitomized the vapidness of the 80s I was trying to get away from. They were everything that was wrong with that decade.

The Fixx was my favorite band in high school (late 80s). Thomas Dolby was my favorite solo artist.

Of course, I haven't listened to either in about 10 years (I listened to Thomas Dolby a little about 10 years ago because I kept meeting him in 1999).

I have never seen this commercial.

/ex-wife took the TV in 1997 and I never replaced it

When I saw that commercial I thought the lead singer sounded like Neil Diamond, but I didn't care enough to google it.

The Head-On commercials, while annoying, represent one of the biggest advertising success stories of the last 5 years. They knew it would be annoying and then people would talk about it with family, friends, etc... farking brilliant, imo.

2008-11-11 11:21:00 AM
I remember some years ago Nissan had some awesome commercials for their Maximas. No people or scenes of a dealership were in it, just zoom ins of the body and interior, set to music by the Who (Won't Get Fooled Again I think) and the Smiths' How Soon is Now.

2008-11-11 11:21:35 AM

HKWolf: Sybarite: Cy Curnin, the band's lead singer and co-founder, recently told The Las Vegas Sun that while he likes the royalty checks and the new attention on The Fixx, the quality of the recording itself disturbs him and will therefore just cash them and STFU.

This very much. Just shut up and take the money.

Wasn't Cy designing hats about 10 years ago?

He became a haberdasher?

It's because yuppies have babies as a lifestyle choice, instead of whatever other reason is that people have babies, I don't know.

kliq: I hate how the people just sit there and take her abuse. I want one of them to say, "Brooke Shields...you're hocking mini-vans? Work hard to come by these days?" or "Do you hang around pregnant women to make up for your own guilt about being a postpartum mother?"

Awesome.

Oh no. "Good" music eh? That's funny. The rest of us were forced into listening to shiat. The 80s were so horrible. I can't believe I survived them. And I'll be damned if I admit to liking any part of it now. That's farking awesome.

It's hard, I know.

Other 80s treasures I hated:

Van Hagar
Duran Duran

Basically anything that was overhyped and overproduced.

I agree. Speaking of Outback Steakhouse, anyone remember those commercials from some time back that sounded like Blue Öyster Cult had been dragged into the studio to do them? "Kangaroo can survive in the desert... how about you? Out-back!"

But this shiat works too.

Now see, I cant fault this guy. Yes I hate him, yes his shait routine is insufferable and should be used as torture at Git-Bay, but he took his "gift" of gab and is making a farking MINT at the bank. I gotta admire that, someone that took the ball and ran like hell with it.

Saved by zero is this year's "this is arrrr coontreeeee". Still nowhere near as bad as the burger singing Air Supply obnoxiously for wendy's last winter. Those radio spots made me stabby.

I'm gradually making my peace. It wasn't until recently I could appreciate some of the bands I snubbed back in the day like the Psychedelic Furs, Echo and the Bunnymen, Big Country and even bands like U2 used to really annoy me when they first got big.

I just hated the sound overall: that echoey chorus-ridden drum-heavy production.

Now I see that many bands were into 60s music and R&B the same as I was, and I can appreciate them...

But certainly not then. Still hate the Fixx, though...

INXS was a guilty pleasure for me. I worshipped the Police, but I agree that with Ghost in the Machine they got a little too polished. I hated Duran Duran at the time, but listening to them now, I have to admit they had good pop chops and their bassist was pretty darn good. No arguments about the others, but I will admit to liking one Madonna song: "Live to Tell".

Adding to the list:

Michael Jackson
Guns and Roses

We are reaching the point that I am two weeks away from stopping by my local Toyota dealership, buying a brand-new Toyota Tundra with zero APR financing, driving the car off the lot, doing a U-turn, then plowing it through the front window of the dealership at 60 mph while screaming, "SAVED BY ZERO,"

Said it before, but worth giving props again... I went to an '80s Fest concert a few years ago that featured Rick Springfield, Tone Loc and The Fixx. Rick Springfield was awful, just horribly full of himself. Tone Loc was kinda fun, just enjoying the ride. But The Fixx were a class act -- they weren't in it for nostalgia; they're still a working, touring band, aging gracefully, writing and performing new stuff and doing their old hits with aplomb. They still sound incredibly tight. Color me impressed.

I can't say this enough:

I farking hate that commercial, I farking hate the people responsible for it, and I hope everyone involved with that commercial, from the intern that fetched the coffees to the ad wizard that visualized the big red zero, dies slowly and painfully from pancreatic cancer. FARK! Just thinking about it makes me want to stab a nun...

Ever wonder what his answering machine greeting sounds like?

Whenever any of his commercials are on, my 4-year-old son comes and tells me "Daddy, there's that guy who's always yelling at us!" He then grabs his Nerf gun and proceeds to unload a clip of foam-and-suction-cup arrows at the screen.

It is so funny. Normally this kinda stuff doesn't bother me, but it always seems its during the football games and the consistent commercial breaks make this god awful "saved by zero" spot even worse.

I know, I know, the money, but god, why does any decent band allow their songs to be used in commercials? Once it's used with a catchy commercial, no matter how good of an artist and how great of a song it was, it's permanently branded as that product's theme song. It will never go back to just being its own work again.

Agreed now about Duran Duran. Then they just annoyed me. Greatly. I liked "True Blue" by Madonna, but only because MTV had a contest where viewers sent in their own videos for the song, and they played it non-stop for 24 hours. I was indoctrinated.

G&R was my guilty pleasure at the time. Now, I wonder WTF I was thinking...Axl. What a chump.

Michael Jackson I never understood what the appeal was, but then again I loved "Don't Stop Till You Get Enough." That was when he looked sort of normal, so maybe that was it...

Raccoon Dog: sandralark: theres something about the five dollar footlong commercial that just gives me the willies. in a bad way.

It is the C major to F minor chord progression. Go play it on the piano. You'll get the willies.

THIS! Even hearing those two chords in my head made me a little bit angry just now. Plus, they also have this new line in G7 whose words are completely incomprehensible to me that makes me even angrier. We know it's just in there to set up the C major again!

And don't get me started on the credit report guys. Their complete lack of talent across the board - from writing to singing to acting - is worthy of Fergie.

/shudder

2008-11-11 11:43:25 AM
I love the commercial. Its just kind of soothing when they come in with the music: the extended Saaaaaaaaavvvvvveee gets me. I love it. Good melody. Then the repeated Save by Zero! really entices me to in fact, save. Hell it could be 0% financing for a shiat sandwich and I would really consider with that tune!

Hint: I'm joking.

Divide by Zero!

Those are counterproductive. I realized, when I watched those, that I was just observing how weird that visual effect was, and completely didn't listen to the commercial at all. I'm sure I wasn't the only one.

2008-11-11 11:46:06 AM
Other commercials that make me want to commit mass genocide:

The new Overstock.com wholesome country values commercials.

The Sarah McLaughlin commercial with all the animals in cages.

The FreeCreditReport.com commercials, obviously. There's just no reason why those wouldn't make me stabby.

Sonic Commercials.

Shamwow/Oxiclean/etc.

Ingles Sin Barreras!!!

Those are just the ones I can think of at this moment. In general, 98% of all commercials piss me off. And don't give me that "I have DVR, I don't have to watch commercials" or "I haven't watched a commercial in 15 years" horseshiat. I have the DVR, and believe me, when I can get away with it, I don't watch the farking commercials. But if I'm channel surfing because there's nothing on, and I happen to find a show I'm interested in, I'm going to farking watch it. I'm not going to record it so I can watch it an hour from now, I'm just going to watch it now. I'm not going to just turn off my TV everytime the commercials come on. Because then I'll just get pissed off when I think I've waited long enough and flick back on the TV and bam, there's Vince the Shamwow guy telling me about how it even works wet.

The early 80's MJ was listenable, but not for extended periods of time. These days I find that even if I still detest a band's output, I'll give props for stellar production. MJ is one of those. Others include The Bee Gees, Fleetwood Mac and Hall & Oates. Although, I have to admit, Fleetwood Mac and Hall & Oates are guilty pleasures to this day.
