I guess. It could also be to, you know, help their defense a bit.

This will end well. For Wes Welker.

Not so sure about this. I mean I have no idea what kind of physical shape Law is in. Im assuming Mangini knows what hes doing, wouldnt sign the guy if he didnt think he could help.

2008-11-11 09:15:29 AM
If Law is such a force why did the 1-8 Kansas City Chiefs cut him and why has it taken until week 10 for him to find a home. Add this acquisition to Mangini's strange personnel moves. He brings in an aged QB and releases a more accurate passer. That makes no sense to me.

And ESPN has posted this:

News: Gholston had one tackle Sunday, giving him just seven (along with no sacks) through the first eight games.
Spin: Two months does not a career make, but Gholston has Jets fans muttering "bust" under their breath.
**
Seven tackles from a first round draft choice? Are you kidding me? Jerod Mayo (who the Jets passed on) has 65, including 50 unassisted.

Patriots 28, Jets 12

theres not really any logic to your prediction. Yes Gholston so far has been a bust, but i think in time he will get better. Hes playing a new position and clearly uncomfortable. As for Law, you are aware that the Pats were trying to sign him as well. And he chose to go to the Jets. To me, thats a good sign, because although the Jets may be dumb at times, I expect smart moves from the Pats front office. And also, do you know how the draft works? If the Pats had the Jets pick they probably would have made the same pick. There are always busts, it certainly doesnt mean the Pats are much smarter, the Jets had one of the best drafts of every team in the NFL. And now for fun I will try to predict the score in the same absurd fashion you did.

Jets 28, Pats 12

jaylectricity: Who's he gonna cover, Heath Evans?

Pretty much the same question I had. The past couple years Law's "playing weight" has been fairly high for a CB, and I can't imagine he is in pristine condition at the moment. Who knows, maybe he has been busting his ass for the past few months and is in better shape than he was in Kansas City, but I wouldn't go betting on that.

With that being said, what is Law's job on Thursday night? He certainly isn't going to be covering Moss or Welker one-on-one (not that many DBs do that these days anyways). So is he going to be a nickle back? Maybe even a safety? Is this just a psychological ploy by Mangini?

i think its mixture. They said they want him in at safety and CB. so who knows. But I dont think Mangini would throw him in to a game this big unless he felt it would be advantageous. Lowery has been pretty solid, but has a rough couple of weeks and they just want some insurance at the position. Im with you on the who know what kind of shape Law is in though. I mean, maybe like you said, he has been busting his ass and hes in great shape. But i dont know. This is out of left field for me.

Although Gholston may not be doing much, Elam, Lowery and Keller are. Also, the Jets signed Law to fill in a saftey. They had the room and they kept him off the Patriots who were also looking to sign him.

Last year the Jets went 3-13 under Chad Pennington. Under Brett Favre, they're 6-4 through 10 games and almost a shoe-in for a wildcard.

Who's he gonna cover, Heath Evans?

As a matter of fact, yes. (Kind of.) The Jets have struggled to cover backs, 3rd receivers and tight ends, so Law will probably play the nickel and take on the likes of Evans or Faulk or whoever lines up in the slot.

DE->34 OLB is a tough transition. It usually takes 2-3 years. And DEs can take time to adjust. Please see Mario Williams of the Texans. Terrible first year, quality DE now.

Mayo plays ILB and a 43 LB, and was a college LB, making the transition much, much easier.

i almost welcome that since i have welker on my fantasy team. It also could be, just maybe, that they're actually giving the ball to Thomas Jones more than 14 times a game.

And perhaps the improvements to the offensive and defensive lines?

But no, let's give credit to Farve's mediocre 16/12 TD/INT ratio.

I'll have to alert the Patriots that they're running a 4-3, I'm sure it'll be news to them.

They do play some 4-3, maybe 20% of the time if I had to guess. And with the injury to Adalius I wouldn't be shocked to see them in the 4-3 a little more often, with Jarvis Green playing the role of the pass rushing DE.

But yeah, saying Mayo had an easy time adjusting to the NFL and Belichick's defense is a bit naive. And while Gholston has the added pressure of switching from DE to OLB, you'd think based on his athleticism alone he would be doing better than he has been thus far. If you cant even put him out there with the simple "go get the quarterback" order then something is going on.

2008-11-11 12:18:47 PM
We'll see Thursday night.
I still think Gholston is a bust. The Patriots have rookie unsigned free agents with more tackles. And rookie DE Long from the Rams has 31 tackles.

Lots of Jets fans here.

You do know that it takes years to be able to properly judge draft classes right?

Just because Kiper ranked it as a good draft doesn't mean anything.

..and I'm sorry but this game invokes the "don't bet against the team that has consistently beat the other".

Sorry, I meant to say ILB in the 34, and a ILB in the 43, which he's accustomed to. The Pats play a hybrid (playing both 34 and 43 depending on the package), but have been seeing a lot more 43, than usual the past couple years...

I'm definitely not muttering "bust" under my breath, and Jets fans have seen our share of busts.

Calvin Pace was a phenomenal bust until just last season with AZ. Now he's one of the stars of the NYJ defense. Sometimes players take time to develop. Dewayne never did because the Jets drafted him to play in a 4-3, and then switched to a 34, where he isn't big enough to play NT.

Vern is also seeing limited time. With Harris out now, his role should expand, but the Jets have had the luxury of having about 8 other guys to include in their front 7 who have been effective as hell; Gholston didn't have to come in and be a superstar. Bryan Thomas already basically does the job we were expecting him to do.
Also, Gholston is far more physically gifted than Robertson ever was.

This really shouldn't be news any more but most first round picks aren't worth the price they cost. The Jets do have 4 starters from this years draft, though. That is a solid draft by any measure.

Getting out of Arizona helps too. (See Jones, Thomas; Rice, Simeon; Davis, Leonard; Vanden Bosch, Kyle; Hearst, Garrison. All were better after being busts or semi-busts with the Cards.)

I really thought they reached on Keller, but the more he plays the more he is looking like a great pickup. And I think he could be the key player for the Pats defense to contain Thursday night. If he is able to catch some passes in the seam the safeties will have to back off, opening things up for the running game. But if Mayo/Sanders/Merriweather/whoever is covering him can keep him under wraps it should help them slow down the Jets offense. We'll see...

Keller is a phenomenal talent. I would like them to mix him and Leon Washington in a bit more. I know this may be a crazy thing to say, but the Jets have nearly too many weapons. Cotchery and Coles, Jones, Keller, Washington. They all need to get the ball. But I would like to specifically see Washington get more carries and Keller get more passes.

So I see they released Justin Miller to make room for Law. Was he just a horrible cornerback or is there some other injury/attitude thing going on? I know he was pretty highly ranked coming out of college and he was a damn good kick returner, too.

Did they? Well they must have just done it. As a corner, Miller wasnt much, but he was a great kick returner. Now we have Leon washington, so we didnt really need him. Kind of funny since hes like the last jet to go to the pro bowl.
