Awww.... Poor Gus.

Living in Petaluma, the home of the World's Ugliest Dog Contest, I get to meet the dogs before and/or after the event.

Gus was a sweetie. Ugly li'l critter, but just one of the sweetest, happiest dogs you'd ever meet.

Very sad.

If you can, look for Animal Planet's coverage of the WUDC. It's a lot of fun.

Sad. I didn't even know Sandra Bernhard was sick.

2008-11-11 12:08:05 AM
SirHolo,
I can make a pretty educated guess why mine got cancer.

I adopted her at 4 years old just before she was about to go to a shelter. She hadn't been spayed and never had a litter. The cancer was a mammary sarcoma.

The link between those 2 facts is that if a dog goes through 2 or more heats without ever bearing pups, it raises their chances for mammary cancer by 50%. That 50% was enough to push her luck onto the bad end of things.

I never got her spayed because when she did go into heat, it was pretty rare and barely noticeable. I always kept her pretty close to me so I was sure there was not much possibility for an accidental pregnancy. According to everything I've read, her dice were cast before I got her anyway.

Mimi was a very well cared for and very well trained dog. If I had adopted her as a puppy, she'd probably still be alive today as I would have spayed her like any other puppy.

As it was, her first 4 years weren't so great, but the last 8 were wonderful. When the cancer hit, we excised the tumor and removed her uterus and ovaries in an attempt to stop it. It was too late. Mammary cancer in dogs is almost always a grim prognosis. The mammary tracts hook right into the lymphatic ducts which circle around the inside of the pelvis and straight into the lungs in one direction and up under the front legs and into the chest in the other direction.

I kept her happy and comfortable until the end. Those last days, she ate mainly a diet of grilled chicken breasts, string cheese and rice. I also fed her a daily ration of protein powder and milk which she loved. I was decompressing from a 2 year tour in Iraq, so we spent a lot of time together. The only outwardly noticeable sign was a general lack of energy. Her appetite stayed healthy and she had a good demeanor all the way through. She never suffered until the last night.

That night, her lungs began to fail and her chest cavity began to fill with fluid. She couldn't get comfortable and was short of breath. I stayed with her and made her comfortable. She finally went to sleep but I don't think I did. When dawn came, I called my good friend and dog trainer that kept her for me while I was overseas and told her she needed to come. Mimi didn't want to get up to go to the bathroom as she normally did. I carried her out to the front yard and halfway through peeing, she just sort of sat down. I carried her back inside and Trish showed up shortly after that. She talked to her and pet her while I took Mimi's bed and blanket out to my truck. I carried her outside and Trish said goodbye.

Driving to the vet, Mimi started to succumb. It was horrible. She was beginning to pass out. She barked at me with these short panicked barks. Complete distress. It was probably the longest drive of my life. We got to the vet's office and he wasn't there yet. I explained the emergency and had already called in. I was holding her and she was coming around pretty well. The vet showed up in about 10 minutes and I took her back to the exam room.

He explained what I was afraid of. Her lungs were shutting down and fluid was filling around them. The doctor wanted to give her a diuretic, catheter her bladder and relieve the pressure. The situation was dire and he needed to work on her then and now. He picked her up from the exam table where she was sitting. It was hard to let go of her. He carried her through the door to the back. She and I looked at each other and that was the last time I saw her alive.

I went to the front desk and told the VA to call me if anything happened or the situation changed. I then walked out to my truck to wait. An hour or so passed. I went in to check on her and they said she was sleeping. The catheter was working and she drained alot of fluid. I went back outside to wait some more. About 2 hours later, my phone rang and it was the vet. Mimi had passed in her sleep.

I was in shock. It was shock on top of shock added to an open wound. I ran back inside and they took me to an operating room where she was laid out on a table. They had done everything to revive her, but her heart failed. As an act of mercy or final gift to me, I guess, she had saved me the awful decision to put her down and died in her sleep. I took her collar off. I ran my fingers through her soft fur and sobbed quietly. I bent down and breathed in trying to imprint her scent on my brain, I guess. "Go home, puppy." It's hard to remember if I thought it or said it under my breath. Things are foggy at this point. The vet eventually came back in and asked what I wanted to do.

I had already decided to have her cremated. There's a pet cremation service and cemetary about 5 miles down the road from there, so we called him and the guy came to take her away.

I walked out of the vet's office in a daze. I called Trish to let her know Mimi was gone. I went home to be with the other dogs and cry. The dogs ran up to me when I walked in the door and were all over me. They could tell she was not well when we left and they were distressed when I came home alone. We just laid in bed the rest of the day while I cried my eyes out.

That's been almost 2 years now, like I said. Hardly even a few hours go by that I don't think fondly of my lost friend. That dog saved my life when I went through some really dark times and I'm eternally grateful. If you've never had such a close bond with an animal it's hard to get. I can tell you, though, that on my death bed as an old man I'll still think back on that quirky little white dog and smile. I miss you, friend. I'll see you again some day.

Sorry if this post is rambling or long. I've never put these words down on paper before.
