I christen thee, the U.S.S. Liger!

Oh, wait. . . mythical figure. . .

2008-11-07 02:10:02 PM
I guess I better re-name my boat. It was Lucky Himmler.

2008-11-07 02:14:06 PM
I had no idea that Pacific Princess was a Nazi. I guess we were all fooled by such a benign-sounding name.

2008-11-07 02:19:09 PM
That's like the USS William Ayers or USS G Gordon Liddy.

Actually no, it's not, it's far far far worse than those.

The U.S. government owns one called the Horst Wessel.

At least it used to be. (Try to guess what it is now, you'll be surprised!)

strangeguitar: I guess I better re-name my boat. It was Lucky Himmler.

That's an outrage! You damn well better rename it. Himmler was never lucky.

:P

Tr0mBoNe: When is the U.S.S. George W. Bush getting built?

The next carrier is the George H.W. Bush commisioning scheduled for 2009, next up is the Gerald Ford, expected completion date 2015, after that I would expect the ship to be named Kennedy, so somewhere around 2031.

Why do these stories always originate in the Netherlands? What is it with the swamp Germans and their affection for the Nazis anyway?

Tr0mBoNe: When is the U.S.S. George W. Bush getting built?

They're waiting for him to decide if he wants the racing stripe down the side, the spoiler, or both.

Umm...this isn't Himmler we're talking about, it's a guy who actively resisted Hitler from 1943 on which is why he didn't go to prison because of his, "very important" services to the resistance between August 1943 and March 1944.

That's a craft that's powered by big oil, and you have to bail it out just before jumping ship.

You know who else thought it was a good idea to name ships after Nazis?

Man, and here I was thinking only America whined about dumb sh*t. It was the man's father, let him honor his name regardless of political affiliation. I know I would.

/Netherlands, you disappoint me.

Heerema joined the Nazis out of opposition to communism rather than enthusiasm for national socialism. He said he then switched sides and joined the resistance in 1943 "as he could no longer associate himself with the ideas of the Nazis".

He's not Dutch. He's Italian.

I have yet to see a single history book mention the fact that Hitler's war machine ran on gasoline made from coal, and that the process was sold to the German firm of I.G.Farben GMBH, by Standard Oil, for the paltry sum of $35 million.

Sounds ridiculously cheap, until you figure how much they made off of World War II; for that size fish, very reasonable bait expense.

The deal was brokered by the firm of Kuhn & Loeb, a primarily Jewish banking house. . . but apparently not the sort of folks who were too proud to touch Nazi money, if there was enough of it.

Quite a few good people were swept up in the Nazi mania, then came to their senses later on and regretted it.

His services as a resistance fighter outweigh his duty as a SS man. Well, I guess its better that Rudolf Heydrich wanting to name his boat..."SS Obergruppenfuehrer Reinhard Heydrich"

"He said Heerema's son Edwin's desire to honour his father was understandable up to a point, but the choice of name was "tasteless and unethical"."

He tried to name it the HNLMS My Dad Genocided And Everyone Thought It Was Awesome?

There's nothing in the article that suggests this guys father did anything other than live in German during Nazi rule.
