If it's in restore mode, and you didn't put it in restore mode, it's probably blank, or more than the screen is broken.

The client can just get another iPad and restore their last iTunes backup of the broken iPad onto the new one. Or, if they were on iOS 5 and were using its option to do automatic nightly iCloud backups, you can restore the iCloud backup onto a new iPad. If they weren't doing regular iTunes syncs OR using iCloud, they're probably screwed.

  2011-11-17 08:47:21 PM
Yeah they weren't syncing or backing up.

  2011-11-17 10:21:34 PM
Hold power button for 4 seconds, power down, power up (without holding home button) and see if that clears restore mode, if not then they're probably screwed; tell them to turn on iCloud backups on their replacement for next time.

Current Resident: Well, hell.

I'm looking to buy a tablet and, as a veteran desktop (and get-off-my-lawn) guy, am getting completely lost in my research.

My requirements are:
- WiFi access via typical access points (home wireless, Starshmucks, etc)
- No cell plan required
- Flash and Silverlight support (yeah, iPads are out), mainly for YouTube and Netflix
- At least one USB port (mini or standard)
- 9" to 10" screen, at minimum
- Price of ~$500 USD

So, fellow Farkers, any suggestions and or recommendations?

/geez it feels like '94, researching building my first PC

I have a Toshiba Thrive and it does everything you listed except for Silverlight.
There is a group working on porting the Linux version (Moonlight) for Android but it doesn't appear to be fully working yet.
Here's a Link (pops to Newegg)

Don't most Androids also have native Youtube apps? The iPad definitely has Youtube and Netflix apps native, no need for Flash or Silverlight. Adobe is discontinuing Flash on Android anyway.

Depending on what you need the USB port for, the iPad might work. I've got an iPad 1 and will probably get a Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 once Ice Cream Sandwich runs on it, just so I can have one of each to compare and test stuff on.

For Netflix. But since there's an app for that...

I think I'm going to go for the Samsung Galaxy 10.1.

It meets enough of my reqs and needs.

Anyone ever replace a fan on a T43 Thinkpad? Got the dreaded "fan error" message and it won't boot. Also, any recommendations on where to buy one, what to expect to pay, etc? The swap looks easy enough for me to pull off if I can't get it to my friend quick enough.

OK. I now also have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 to go alongside my iPad1. (I'm not switching, I'm keeping both.) What's the must-have stuff for an Android n00b?

  2011-12-14 12:21:27 AM
Most of the necessary stuff is already in Android
Have you rooted it?
Because there's stuff like Advanced Task Manager, AdFree, Titanium Backup, and Root Explorer that all require root.

RealCalc is an improvement over the Android calculator. I use Dolphin Mini as a browser, but on a full-sized device, the regular Dolphin would be the better choice. Has tabbed and gesture browsing.

Terminal Emulator for access to the linux command line. Remote RDP Lite for remote desktop.

Galactic Core live wallpaper as it's just cool lookin'

My only advice for working on a laptop is be very, very careful not to strip the screws. That's really easy to do and it leads to tears and pain.

I hate sites that force disable cache making Firefox refresh when you use the back button. Especially when loading the page has side effects and/or does not result in the same bits as when you first loaded it.

Well, I hate browsers whose back-button cache doesn't keep DOM changes that happen after the page loads. (Which is, apparently, "all of them")

Hey all (hi, vegasj!)

I got a new TV with wifi (yaaay). But I'm having trouble connecting. I see the SSID, and when trying to connect it correctly identifies the security I'm using. But it times out and says can't connect. The mfr says the TV has 802.11n, but I think my router's 802.11b/g. Are 802.11n devices supposed to be backwards compatible (routers are, but ...)? And if I was in the wrong frequency band wouldn't I just not see the SSID and security from the TV?
I've also made sure that the TV's wireless MAC is on my allowed list, etc. Anyway, happy new year. Thanks for any clues!

  2012-01-07 03:07:57 PM
Never mind. I turned the TV off and turned it back on again and it hooked up to the wireless just fine without being asked. Sheesh.

Getting an i7-2600, or an i7-2600k? The "k" version is overclockable, if that matters to you. Also, the GT 430 is a very weak video card. If you have no gaming needs, I wouldn't even bother with a video card, instead use the processor's integrated graphics. Looks like that motherboard has the requisite video outputs.

FWIW, I had an interesting problem with an 11g gadget (a Wii?) that wouldn't talk to an 11g access point because I'd set it to 11g-only mode. Once l turned on its 11b compatibility mode, it was fine. Very bizarre, that.

naw, no overclocking. These would be work machines again. mild graphics needed, mostly processor & memory required. I actually need to dump the SSD too, found out our software constantly writes and rewrites from the server to the local stations... and they might last 2 months if that's the case.

  2012-01-12 10:47:34 PM
Most SSD's use wear leveling and are massively overprovisioned to try to get around the write cycle limit issue (like an 80 GB SSD might really have 128 GB of flash on it, with the extra space used for bad block replacement).

I'm still just using them as ZFS cache devices so far and I've only seen a few bad blocks in the SMART stats... they're wearing out a lot slower than I thought they would, honestly, but I'm not ready to replace all my spindles with flash just quite yet.

OK. I still think you should skip the weak graphics card and just use the integrated graphics (unless you need 23.976 FPS movie playback, which Intel's driver won't do and is the only real advantage a GT430 would have). Or go big and get a real graphics card, but I doubt that would be justified by the machines' usage. And if you do go with the integrated graphics, there's another reason to consider the 2600k over the 2600 non-k: it has the HD3000 graphics instead of HD2000.

80 Celsius is HOT. Mine runs at about 32 and I remember that that used to be hot before dual cores.

Depends on the processor.
My old AMDs (K6II-450, 1.2 GHz Thundebird and maybe also the Athlon3200+) were always in the sixties, IIRC.

I run a 1Ghz thunderbird for my fileserver and it's usually around there....those procs were the hot. if you didn't seat those heatsinks just right you just fried a $250 processor. those were the days. :)

  2012-01-14 12:44:29 PM
AMD's thermal issues were part of why I stopped using their stuff. Chipset bugs were the other part.

Our servers tend to run about 30C when lightly loaded and 76C when I max out all the cores.

our designers run dual HDMI 27" monitors... need to run 2 video cards.

Which leads me to my next question...

when a mother board has PCI Express 2.0 x16 2 or 3 slots they say "support x16; x16/x16; x16/x8/x8 configurations"

can two 2.0 x16 video cards be ran in the 2 PCIe slots ok?

  2012-01-16 06:33:50 PM
What resolution are the 27"'s running at? You only need dual-link if it's more than 1920x1080. (Can HDMI even do dual-link?) There might be single video cards that can do two dual-link displays though. There are a few that'll drive two separate non-dual-link displays though (might need an HDMI to DVI adapter for the second one) and it looks like the GT430 is one of 'em.

Anyway if the board does x16/x16 you should be fine, if it did x16/x8 one card would run slower but should still work.

  2012-01-16 08:38:08 PM
thanks Mike, I found out 4 screens are HDMI or DVI or VGA... the other 2 are DVI or VGA only. Not sure if they run them more than 1920x1080. maybe 1920x1200

Might go with the Asus Sabertooth X56 MB which should run x16/x16 & 2 GeForce GT 430

I've found out running 1 video card for 2 monitors makes troubleshooting graphic issues harder. Running 2 cards, 1 per screen, would be easier to narrow down monitor problems or card problems.

plus, this way should give the possibility of added a 3rd and/or 4th screen down the road.

Yes. When a board has three graphics slots with an x16/x8/x8 lane configuration, it's telling you that the third slot will, when a card is inserted into it, steal half the bandwidth of the second slot. That won't make any difference for a graphics card, though.

wouldn't talk to an 11g access point because I'd set it to 11g-only mode

Reminds me of bugs I encountered when I worked in wireless c. 2004. IIRC, some chips didn't like seeing beacons on the higher bit rate modes and you needed to enable 1 or 2 Mbps as a mandatory mode. Or something like that. It's been a while. We were trying to convince clients to use less loaded access points. One client chip you had to ignore for a while so it would give up, forget about you, and keep looking. Another respected the go away error code. A Broadcom chip retried forever to connect its favorite access point no matter what you did to steer it elsewhere. I bet it worked great in the lab with exactly one client and one access point.

So I have a quick question for the geeks who are obviously much more knowledgeable than I am, since they're dickin around with hardware an shiat.

I've got a Dell Inspiron 15 with Vista - yes, I know, stock as hell, long story - and although I've had flawless performance the two and a half years I've owned it, it's been acting funny lately. Mostly when I'm online and I'm browsing, I'll get (NOT RESPONDING) all of a sudden, and then nothing works, no CTRL+ALT+DEL, no Task Manager, nothing. I have to hard power cycle, reboot, it runs chkdsk, everything is copacetic, and I go on as usual...until it happens again, 5 minutes or 5 hours down the line.

I run MSE, Avira, and Malwarebytes. Not one has turned up a single issue. Yes, they're all updated.

I use CCleaner to uninstall shiat I'm not using, and clear my startup list. Everything is updated to within an inch of it's life.

So I bought a WD My Passport 500GB drive, the better to clean my lappie with. I installed the software and ran a backup, thinking that if I used it as a separate storage device and cleared as much as I could from the laptop, things might run a bit smoother. However, I'm not really happy with not being able to browse the files on the WD. I'd rather be able to access and use it just like a flash drive. Is wiping the external drive and using it like a huge memory card a possibility?

But I fogrget, as it has been years.

I went with my memory and the X extracted, and the /C worked fine.
But thanks for looking if you did.

What you probably ought to do is back up all of your data to the external and reinstall Windows. Vista has a built-in backup service that works fine, so you'd just have to "find" a Vista disc. Or, if the laptop still has the factory reinstall partition on the drive, you can use that, then import all of the data you backed up.

If reinstalling Windows doesn't fix the slowdowns, then you're seeing the symptom of a hardware problem.

Any recommendations for excellent data recovery software?

Got the message that "Failure imminent" and then the HD rolled over and died. I have a Seagate 1TB that was supposed to be doing backups but when I plugged it in after replacing the 2 WD HD's and a clean install of Vista from my HP recovery discs the Seagate created a partition and won't let me in to the old files. Apparently, Seagate knows about this and recommends data recovery software to locate and extract the old files. (facepalm)

So, I need a recommendation. Cost isn't an issue. Just need to get as much as I can back.
Thanks,
