Do Macs have a way to lock the screen _now_ requiring password to unlock? All I can find is the slider bar where you say how much idle time should cause a lock. Even sleep mode doesn't require a password if awakened before the timeout.

Mike: Wow, talk about a weird motherboard failure... the machine suddenly will not POST with its normal 4 x 2 GB sticks of memory (like it's been running with for years), but put one or two 1 GB sticks in and it's fine. WTF?

This machine's been having NMI errors for a week, so clearly something is wrong with either the memory or the motherboard itself...

Could be as simple as the higher-density memory needing more voltage and one of the capacitors supplying said voltage getting old.

quickdraw: Hiya Geeks!

I am looking to build or buy a desktop for around $600. to run wow cata on ultra graphics. I was thinking about getting a barebones kit but its been 5 years since I built a computer and it's all pretty confusing.

All the off-the-shelf PCs seem to have integrated graphics cards these days. Should I still be avoiding those?

If it's got a PCIe graphics slot, you can make it run WoW at ultra settings. If you want something off-the-shelf, get a desktop that looks like a normal mid-tower and add one of these to it.

Now, that's a cheap solution that probably won't be too much for the power supply on a cheap PC. You could probably get by with an even cheaper card, but I don't know what resolution your monitor is.

Mike: I have two of those drives -- there is a firmware update that fixes some issues with them, and once you apply that, they work pretty well.

greatly noticeable speed increase? or 'meh' tis ok?

Yeah, that's my best guess so far -- I haven't found any bulging caps just yet...

vegasj: greatly noticeable speed increase? or 'meh' tis ok?

Well, they're definitely not slower. :) A few specific things are a lot faster, most things feel about the same... It is 7200rpm, so if you're replacing a 5400rpm laptop drive it's an obvious win.

in my infinite laziness, I have installed an RSS feed reader to pull feeds from all my favorite sites.
now I no longer have to actually click to find updates on all the trivialities that compose my modern life. liferea will do it for me, and display them in chronological order.

does anyone have any suggested RSS feeds they find essential? already have a few from BBC and al-jazeera.

// Meh, tis not ok, its a seagate. Maybe they have improved, but needing a Patch after purchase seems a bad mark from the start.
I don't yet trust drives with the new miniature tracks & hi capacity. fill one of those and have it evaporate? ... better to spend for top of line wdc and, keep testing.
hardware fail is remembered even longer than marriage fail.
browser fail is remembered forever...

  2011-02-25 11:28:41 AM
...and I've had way more WDCs fail than Seagates, and more (pre-Seagate) Maxtors than WDC's. But I've had a lot of every brand and they all die at some point -- everyone puts out a line of lemons every now and then (pre-Hitachi Deskstar, Seagate 7200.11, etc). Everyone's got their own religion there. :)

  2011-02-26 12:12:33 AM
almost every Maxtor I've had has failed at one point or another. I have some Seagates still chugg'n

Lost a WD drive last year. They replaced it quickly enough, though. Other than that, I've been lucky with hard drives.

Oh good lord. Someone was doing a "count the IP addresses in this photo" thing on Facebook, and for laughs I tried to count how many IPs I'm using on my home network...

I came up with 28.

A bit excessive :p

Yeah, I only have one public one but still, this is kinda why IPv6 matters :)

I kind of like the tabbed profiles, but how about a preference setting for which tab your profile defaults to when you click the myFark link? I know that 99% of the time I go to my profile, it's to see the recent threads I've posted in. The way it is now adds a step.

Same for me.
Considering the amount of "bookmark" posts in certain threads, I suppose it's the same for most people.

I mean, I know what's in my public profile and if I'm not there to change something (which will need a click on the edit tab no matter whether "public" or "recent" is the default), the only reason for me to visit my own profile is the recent threads list.

Anyone got a favorite FOSS backup software? I'm trying AceBackup which is perfect for the file by file backup with keeping all the versions, and also trying macrium reflect which looks great for disk images, but neither does both, which I want. Any suggestions? I used to use Windows' backup which was exactly what I wanted before it decided to not work. It was slow as hell anyway.

Got a terrabyte drive, one of the most exciting things about it was going to be seeing that >1000GB or even 1TB of free space when I start it. But of course I don't think about them using BS non-binary exponent gigabytes. 931GB? F*CK YOUR 931 GB. So ugly.

Try disabling some browser plugins, especially Farky and NoScript.

None installed, it's a work computer. I forgot to mention that in the Farkback I sent.

Well, OK, it's got that .net assistant and Java quickstarter install themselves. I'll disable them and see what happens.

Whatever you all did, you seem to have broken the link verifier:
if you quote someone using the quote-button and submit the comment, the link verifier throws the URL away as unfetchable.
I guess it might have something to do with the "#" between thread- and comment-ID getting URL-encoded to "%23" - at least it is "%23" in the URL that's declared as "unfetchable" while the "#" is still there during preview.

Anyone have luck with something that blocks "Best Windows Antivirus 2011", "Fast Windows Antivirus 2011" and their ilk? We're running Kapersky through Untangle and Avira on machines, and they're not catching it.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware should kill an existing infection, not sure on the prevention side.

Anybody know a lot about Chrome? How it selects text for me is wonky and I think it's why I can't use multitouch panning. When selecting text it selects the whole damn line of the screen, not just the actual text (the "blue" does anyway). When I try to scroll with multitouch it does this selection thing instead of scrolling. It's also really ugly. I know other people were able to use touch scrolling so I thought maybe this is why it's not working but IDK if chrome just always selects text like this.

/Hopefully that makes sense, it's a weird problem

does that if I double click or click and highlight. It goes off the screen like grabbing the whole width of the page

make that triple click...

Here's one Google has fail me on. Newegg too.

Anyone have a swell idea to keeping 3 27" LCD monitors cool?

Since I work from home now and run 3 screens... when the afternoon sun beats into the office with the 3 screens all on, some serious heat is given off.

It is really, really uncomfortable to sit in front of these all day baking my face. I've search monitor cooler, keep LCD screens cool, LCD monitors heat, and fark my face feels like it is baking.

No luck

Lower brightness or use LCD-backlight displays vs CCFL-backlight displays (if you can find 'em that large). Best bet's probably just a big ass fan.

OK, first Hitachi Global Storage gets bored by WD, and now Seagate is borging Samsung's hard drive division? So who's left making spinning hard drives now? Just WD and Seagate and (except 3.5") Toshiba?

  2011-04-19 12:30:53 PM
....hm, yeah, that's it, 'cause Toshiba bought Fujitsu's HDD division in 2009. So it'll be just WD, Seagate, and Toshiba now. And SSD's. Wild.

Hey is there anyone who is VB inclined around here? Im trying to figure out how to compare elements of an array I have set up. I want to be able to figure out what the max value is without first sorting. I'm assuming it's something to the effect of If starting value is

  2011-04-20 12:31:42 AM
hmm not sure what cut that off..rest of the statement was if starting value is greater than zero then move to the next. Go to the third see if it is greater than the previous and so on and so forth. Just having a hard time conceptualizing things.

  2011-04-20 12:50:04 AM
Here's how you'd do it the long way around in Perl, should be easy to translate to VB. Assumes everything in the array is a positive number...

my $max_so_far = 0;
foreach my $i (0 .. scalar @arrayname - 1) {
   if ($arrayname[$i] > $max_so_far) {
     $max_so_far = $arrayname[$i];
   }
}

'course if you CAN sort it, the short way in Perl (and maybe VB has something similar) is

my $max = (reverse sort @arrayname)[0];
