OK, geeks, here's an odd one. Why would one machine suddenly decide not to decode the reference in html for the dollar sign?
Suddenly, I'm seeing the $ instead of a $ on one page of my software's display. Running xp, sp3 on a pentium 4 chip w/ 2 gigs ram and haven't changed anything recently at all.
I got no idea.

  2011-01-27 12:31:00 PM
@#$%&
I'm seeing the And sign teh Pound sign the numeral 36 and a semicolon, I typed.
HTML filter, go figure.

HTML entities, you mean?

Yeah, I had the same reaction trying to explain something when the fark filter got overzealous with regards to ampersands and kept messing things up quite thoroughly; I guess it tries to be helpful and on the way breaks escaping.

As for the original problem: not enough information.
Sounds like whatever software you're using to look at whatever page you're talking about doesn't interpret (some?) HTML entities anymore.
Does it only happen with $ or are other characters affected, too?

The Voice of Doom: only happen with $ or are other characters affected

It only happened with the $ sign on one screen. Mike: HTML entities, you mean?

Yeah.

And my customer sent me a screen shot, because I wasn't seeing it.
Then they called back and said it had resolved itself.
Didn't give me a clue form thier end what they did, either.

Now I'll not sleep.

HA! The Canuk I work with figured it out in 5 minutes.
Tools, Internet options, Security, Reset all to default. Re-run the standard checklist for the browser for the application in use, and viola'! No more cofusion in the display.
Good to know.

  2011-01-30 01:43:44 PM
paper plates are not very "green" How about we artfully arrange the food on your body and eat it off of your various and sundry pleasing parts with just our tongues.... Oh wait fark is not our personal sexual deviant paradise. NM Paper is fine.

Anyone notice any speed difference here during weekday afternoons in the last week or so (other than Monday), or does it seem about the same?

  2011-01-30 05:28:45 PM
I think I had some posts timing out(*) during preview, but didn't pay attention to the time (~2 hours ago in the PSAEF, though, for example).
The other day it was with a post that contained ~40 links and I guessed the link verifier was a bit overwhelmed at that time.

But that might also all be the suckiness that's kde4 and not Fark.

(*)
read: I gave up, hit cancel, tried to post again and either it worked then or I decided to STFU and GBTW.

here or everywhere on Fark?

everywhere

I heard when Egypt turned off the internets, it created a massive backpression in the tubes and caused fluctuations which may have attributed to our slowness over the weekend.
/That's what Lefty told me.

  2011-01-31 08:13:18 PM
Wow, IPv4 exhaustion just happened. Like... today.

Guess I need to start working on that IPv6 capable load balancer prototyping...

So any of you Farkers remember last year a submission about porn file sharing lawsuits starting?

Guess which Farker's isp just told him they're being subpoenaed. :0

not me.

Apparently the official announcement of the really-we-mean-it-this-time end of IPv4 is tomorrow. Practice your headline submissions if you're into that sort of thing.

  2011-02-02 12:46:10 PM
Yep. Probably won't watch it live tho.

Meanwhile, v6 work over here continues :)

Is Fark joining the day of IPv6? Should I head up to the mountains that day because the rest of the world as we know it will end?

  2011-02-04 08:21:58 PM
Yeah I'm working on it after I finish some new toys for the Photoshopper crowd

  2011-02-08 01:54:20 AM
Hey Mike,

This might be old news now as I've been too busy to notice lately, but thanks for making some progress on the TLS front. It's nice to not be sending my credentials out every time I want to post.

  2011-02-08 02:08:56 AM
well, not in plaintext anyway, yeah.

Hiya Geeks!

I am looking to build or buy a desktop for around $600. to run wow cata on ultra graphics. I was thinking about getting a barebones kit but its been 5 years since I built a computer and it's all pretty confusing.

All the off-the-shelf PCs seem to have integrated graphics cards these days. Should I still be avoiding those?

// Not if you want a 600$ box.
Integrated have come a long way, and are generally faster.
OTOH, if you think you might wear it out, get a separate one later [non pci]

Wow, talk about a weird motherboard failure... the machine suddenly will not POST with its normal 4 x 2 GB sticks of memory (like it's been running with for years), but put one or two 1 GB sticks in and it's fine. WTF?

This machine's been having NMI errors for a week, so clearly something is wrong with either the memory or the motherboard itself...

  2011-02-17 01:58:15 AM
it's mad at you.

  2011-02-17 12:15:07 PM
hah. $1337 to replace the whole system. Nice number.

borrow it from Drew.

Say, Mike, about that Fark email notification thingee that got turned on by default so people would notice it (apparently even for people who had it disabled previously when it got tested on TF..):

Could it be that the profile options for managing those subscriptions are still set to TF only?
Because I just got one of those notifications and, reading through my profile preferences, I can't find anything related to it.

Closest thing are watched/favorited link lists under "User Tools" and the option to automatically add threads you commented in to those lists under "Link & headline preferences", but in my case those lists are empty and the checkboxes unchecked.

  2011-02-17 03:32:36 PM
Go to the page where you'd go to edit your bio, email address, etc.

  2011-02-17 04:10:15 PM
Ah, ok.
I got so used to that wall of checkboxes in the other sections that I read over the part that said to click "edit" to get at the subscription settings.
Not to mention that the section's header with the "Edit"-button is in "my public profile" and while the email address might be part of a public profile, all that subscription and newsflash stuff is, semantics-wise, rather more "preferences" than "public profile".

As a geek I'm all for being able to configure lots of stuff, but I think the Fark profile has grown to a point that it could use a dose of "you'll-get-over-it" redesign.
To be a bit more constructive instead of just whining:
Maybe structure it like BurningBoard does it, with the three main sections (tabs) "public profile", "preferences" and "no clue what it's called in English" ("management", maybe? It's where you manage stuff like favorited/ignored users lists)" and then some subsections like "notification settings", "personal information". "account information" etc.

Or, for the moment, add an "Edit Email subscriptions"-button somewhere next to the email address under "my public profile", where you put all that "notify me in case of X"-stuff instead of mixing those settings directly with the profile picture and whatnot. ;)

  2011-02-17 04:36:06 PM
There's already plans to split it into tabs.

anyone mess with the HHD/SSD hybrid drives?

Newegg (pops)has a 500gb drive on sale... been wondering about those as a "in the mean time" until the SSD prices come down some more.

I have two of those drives -- there is a firmware update that fixes some issues with them, and once you apply that, they work pretty well.
