Anyone remember a story posted here about a guy who made a very fuel efficient bush buddy like camp stove
IIRC it would recycle it's exhaust back into the burning chamber
It had very little waste / ash left over
It burned very hot and used little fuel

IIRC it was built using a stainless steel tube like from a thermos bottle

This sound familiar to anyone?

Coulda swore I bookmarked the story but can't find it...
This story is probably a year or more old, can't remember for sure
Thanks

Hey guys,

Could anyone offer some advice on free programing to generate web hits? I'm trying to boost my company's site so search engines see that it exists, as of right now I can type in my company's name and it still doesn't come up. I guess it would be similar to what some farkers did when voting for the Jersey Shore cast to be sent to Detroit.

Thank you.

I don't help spamming, but if your site doesn't come up at all:
http://www.google.com/addurl/
I'm sure other search engines have similar forms.

Google also has a big help section; you might, for example, find their guidelines for webmasters interesting:

Tried google, and tried messing around with the system, and am having some issues with something... I understand that in order to save PS1 games while playing them on a PS2, you must have a PS1 memory card. After purchasing a PS1 memory card, I find that plugging the memory card into port one causes my controller to stop working. Plugging it into port two allows my controller to work but prevents me from saving.

Any ideas?

Get a PS3 and plug your PS1 controller and PS2 memory card into it.

Anyone javascript programmers ever see this one...

I have a folder where I keep all my .js files. I have the...

script type="text/javascript" src="javascript/jquery.js"
/script

...all set up. [carats removed] All the right folders are made (for each test I would rename the folder and the link). It will not work if I name that folder "javascript".

"javascr" works
"abc"
"javascripk" works
"javascript" will not work.

When I view source and click the src="[location]", I get a file not found, but ONLY when the folders name is "javascript".

So WEIRD.

Ubuntu (Karmic), Firefox, Apache 2.x, (PHP 5 and playing with jQuery if that matters, all running / testing lolcally)

nosajghoul - my first guess is some kind of rewrite rule in a .htaccess file.

If that's not it can you confirm this is your setup:

/var/www/index.php (this page has the link to the Javascript file)
/var/www/javascript (this is the directory containing jquery.js)

and when you do a "ls -al /var/www" you see something like:

-rw-r--r-- for index.php
drwxr-xr-x for the javascript directory

when you do a "ls -al /var/www/javascript" you see something like:
-rw-r--r-- for jquery.js

Are there any .htaccess files in /var/www or /var/www/javascript?

Is there any general consensus on making a site multilingual (not full-blown i18n just multilingual)? We use a standard LAMP stack and I figure there are at least three ways to accomplish the task:

1) Store strings in a file and include the right set of strings based on the desired language.

2) Store strings in a database and pull the right set of strings based on the desired language.

3) Use something like gettext.

According to this page (written in 2005) gettext was the clear winner: http://mel.melaxis.com/devblog/2005/08/06/localizing-php-web-sites-using-gettex t / (pops)

you can blame the script writers for that.

with all the new improved script wagons coming out coupled with all the new browser tweaks [by browser architects] you will encounter more of these.
I call it a script wagon when there is a group of scripts that are co-dependant.

Lucky bastard. I'm getting married in October - so far I've signed an $8k+ contract with the hotel/caterer, paid $600 for a DJ, paid $650 for a photographer (woot!), paid $803 for a wedding dress, several thousand for the rings and we're going to Italy for two weeks for our honeymoon.

Not to mention trips to Vegas and Denver next month.

I think my credit card is on the verge of achieving critical mass.

hey. I have an Xubuntu livecd that someone sent me the link for.

I burned the Iso onto a dvd. I can boot to the login screen where it asks for the username. No where in the setup (I clicked "install xubuntu" and it ran for a while, rebooted and then...)was I asked to setup a user or password.

Now I have a screen that says "Ubuntu" and then Username. I tried admin and no password, and just blank in both and I get authentication failed.

any ideas?

I know nothing about linux. this is my first foray into it. Im loading it onto an old IBM netvista that is going to be a simple terminal for displaying pictures for a project at work.

Strange. Usually you should have been asked to pick username and password during the installation; maybe it wasn't a "normal" image?
One idea:
Instead of "admin" you could give "user", "oem" and "root" a try.

Then there's the option to boot a LiveCD, access the xubuntu on your hard disk from there and add another user by manually editing the text file that contains the user/password information.
But I think downloading and installing a "normal" (k)ubuntu image that asks you to supply username/password during the installation might be quicker and less frustrating than using a web forum to talk someone through the editing approach.

any fark DBAs around? we've got a sql server 2005 instance that one of our guys messed up, i believe they killed the sql server service and restarted the computer, and when it came back all of our databases are "in recovery" and it times out every time we try to connect to it. it's been 'in recovery'and unable to connect to 'msbd' (also in recovery) whenever we try to use SSMC, for the last 4 days now. i'm unsure how to use the DBCC CHECKDB command to check the db integrity. we have backups(which we can't recover from because it keeps timing out), and it's a testing server, so nothing in production is really lost. is there any way to get it out of recovery mode? we have another sqlserver instance running that's just fine, but this instance keeps timing out. the errors i keep seeing are

database msdb is being recovered. wait until recovery is finished

and

an exception occurred while executing a transact-sql statement or batch Timeout expired.

any thoughts? we don't really have a DBA here, or anyone with much sql experience.

Is there any kind of Windows 95/ect emulator for Windows 7 (x64)? I'm trying to run my old copy of Sim Tower (it's apparently 16 bit?) and nothing seems to work, "xp-mode" won't run (my hardware assisted virtualization is either off or non-existant), dosbox doesn't work (it's not dos) and google returns nothing helpful for an early windows emulator. This is really annoying, I've never even needed to use the built-in compatibility features before, let alone all this.

It can't be this hard to run a game so puny I could hold 1000 copies of it in my memory. I'm sure I had it running on 7/vista 32 bit before, but I have no idea how to emulate 16 bit windows.

Could you use Virtual Box, and find an old license and install disk for 95?

VMWare Player can probably still run Win95.

Kinda surprised the 'Windows XP Mode' thing won't handle it though; that's MS Virtual PC, which is pretty similar to VMWare Player. Check your BIOS settings for enabling hardware virtualization (if it's Intel it's called "VT-t" or something similar, if it's AMD I'm not sure what it's called there)

  2010-05-31 09:59:30 PM
I've never gotten the compatibility modes in Windows to ever make any old software run.

Microsoft gives away VirtualPC as a free download, or they used to, and I'm sure you can find a copy of 95 or 98 somewhere.

  2010-05-31 11:46:29 PM
The "Windows XP Mode" in Windows 7 is VirtualPC + a preconfigured XP VM. That's why I was surprised it wouldn't work. You should still be able to set up Win95 in VirtualPC though...

  2010-06-01 05:13:41 AM
Microshaft had initially crippled Windows 7's version of Virtual PC such that it required VT support to work.

They've apparently fixed that recently.

I'm currently reading up on a way to install XP Mode on any Windows 7 PC regardless of VT. It involves downloading VPC, MS's KB977206 patch, and XPMode itself.

Currently I have XP running via VMWare Player. I had problems getting it to work with VirtualBox.

  2010-06-01 07:08:17 AM
It all worked well. I've got XP Mode running on Win 7 Home Premium without hardware virtualization.

He'll just need VPC for Win 7, and the aforementioned patch. Then he's good to go. Getting XP Mode running is slightly harder.

Oh my GOD does my workplace internet connection suck. From about 11:45 to 2PM it crawls. It doesn't help that we're a 'satellite office' so all of our data to domain controllers, file servers etc. is all over a VPN to the head office (or campus, in our case).

I'm currently copying a file to the file server and the1 20MB file is estimated at 12 hours... My SSH and IRC sessions are crawling too.

What are your thought on making any section of the site where you enter your password HTTPS?

It would be nice to be able to post while traveling or on random hotspots without having to worry about giving up our password.

We'd need to get a new SSL cert w/ multiple hostnames to cover all the cases (in particular Totalfark) and that's something we're looking at the next time our current cert comes up for renewal. That's a few months off though.

I have an issue hopefully someone can help me with.
My laptop used to boot up and be connected to the wireless router almost instantly. Since installing (and then uninstalling since it was rubbish) FortiClient, I now get limited connection for a couple of minutes.
I've rebooted the router, reset the TCP/IP stack, removed the connection and re-added it, reinstalled the drivers. Can't seem to get it to work like it did.
There was a device in device manager, some kind of tunneler, that had the red mark on it, so I uninstalled that. No joy.
Scanned clean too.

Any one got any ideas?
Is there a good tool to see what it is doing during boot?

  2010-06-03 07:15:15 PM
Have you tried connecting to another router?

  2010-06-03 07:56:35 PM
A slight tangent to No_47's suggestion, try wiping out the wireless profile associated to that wireless router. Not sure if it'll help but it's worth a try.

Try issuing this at a root command prompt: netsh winsock reset

Alternately you might try one of the utilities that fixes the Winsock2 stack. They sometimes fix what reinstalling TCP/IP doesn't.

For the life of me I can't remember the name of the one I used though. Wiki mentions one called WinsockXPFix. (It only works on XP).

  2010-06-04 06:23:15 PM
By the by, if you want to run an equivalent to the WinsockXPFix reset on Vista or 7, put this in a .cmd file and run as admin

netsh int ip reset ipreset.log
netsh winsock reset
netsh firewall reset
netsh winhttp reset proxy
ipconfig /flushdns

The firewall reset also switches the windows firewall on if it's disabled... so if you're running a 3rd party firewall you'd want to disable it again.

Anyway, RabidDog, have you tried running a System Restore to a point before you installed that application?

I ran the first 2 of those, I'll try doing them all together.

Yeah, the system restore would be nice wouldn't it. I have a habit of deleting all but the last one of those during my clean ups. Live and learn.

HansensDisease: Alternately you might try one of the utilities that fixes the Winsock2 stack. They sometimes fix what reinstalling TCP/IP doesn't.

If the above doesn't work I'll look for a util. I think the key I found was in network/filters or something similar.
There are some registry keys in the controlsets that I can't delete, LEGACY_FORTIGUARD and similar ones.

  2010-06-05 08:10:39 AM
I uninstalled the wireless network device, rebooted and reinstalled. All good again.

After a bit of googling, I was not alone with this problem. It happened to others while FortiClient is installed.

My wireless connection doesn't play nice with my college's network. Random boot-off and requesting of re-authentication. Sometimes it works again, sometimes it doesn't.

Wireless works everywhere else, whether authenticated or not, without fail. Unfortunately, our college's front-line support is "we don't support user-owned devices" aka "PFO, we don't feel like looking into it".

MMMMmmmm... ok. So, a lot of my courseware is provided online, the lab pc's suck and can barely deal with two windows at a time, the college doesn't provide wired jacks in the rooms I have classes in, I specifically require my own laptop because of one of the courses in my program, and they can't be bothered attempting to troubleshoot the problem on either my end or their end? Seriously?

I'm not the only student with this problem, either. It's happening to about 1/3 of the class.
