technacho, I recommend not running antivirus at all unless you feel like maybe there's a real problem that needs dealt with.

I haven't used any kind of antivirus for a couple of years or so. I tend to get all antsy if I haven't reformatted my windows machine in over a year anyway. The extra processes running in the background annoy me, even if makes no real difference in performance.

Don't even have adware/spyware removal software installed, either. Just don't use it enough to keep it installed and updated.

I tried for a long time to run without an anti-virus because they are typically a lot more trouble than they are worth. The problem is that my wife does not understand the simple concept of "DON'T OPEN EMAIL FROM SOMEONE YOU DON'T KNOW!" She and I both have the same anti-virus but I make sure mine is running and her machine... shudder.

I'd like to run without an AV suite, but it just seems prudent to be running one with the network situation I'm on.

the steam, it wants unholy permissions with your hdd, so its designed to kill interfering processes like AV & FW when it runs.

Technically, you could say its a virus because it acts like one.
how much do you trust steam? to run it you give it all the keys to your HDD.
i would scrub [deep clean/scan] the OS after every use of that one, just in case...

Couple of questions about something I have no experience with:

I have an AT&T cell phone with a SIM card in it. Can I buy an unlocked phone, swap the SIM into it, and expect it to just work? Is it really that easy, or would I have to set it up somehow?

And if so, can I use a smart phone without a data plan? I'm not going to use the browser or email or anything like that, I just want to make sure it will not screw anything up.

For some phones you can unlock this way:

T mobile will work by swapping a sim card to any phone that takes a sim card[unlocked] at&t should.

That's what I think. But I've never done it before, hence the need for reassurance before I spend $$$

if it's not a fancy-pants smartphone with automatic email and other crap, AFAIK it should work.

Curiosity got the better of me- I downloaded the 64-bit version of Windows 7 with the intention of running it in Sun's xVM VirtualBox. Version 2.0.4

My host OS is 32bit XP Pro- I've burnt the ISO to a DVD and tried installing but I've hit a wall- it says that my processor is not a 64bit processor. It's a core 2 duo and I was under the impression that they ALL are capable of running 64bit- am I hosed because the virtual machine won't emulate 64bit, or am I hosed because it won't emulate 64bit if the host OS is 32bit? I've checked under all of the headings I can find, and short of enabling the extensions in one of the advanced tabs I cannot find anything referencing 32bit this or 64bit that. What are my options?

  2009-05-10 01:21:09 AM
Duh Nacho. Update VMbox and instead of selecting "other" select "64bit windows 7" when setting up the system.

Hooray, new problem. I start up the machine and it gives an honest effort to boot but once I get to the splash screen, VMbox, or windows, or both, crashes.

I'll start by allocating more than 12mb of video memory...

  2009-05-10 01:29:03 AM
Ok, now it's installing. I had to uncheck some CPU extensions, add to the video memory available, and went from down 2048 to 1024 of RAM, which may have been causing the issue because that's "more than 50% of my host systems memory!"

If 64 bit 7 runs ok, my machine supports up to 32gb of RAM. sweet.

  2009-05-10 01:57:09 AM
Hm. When I use 1024mb of ram as my base memory, it runs OK, but when I up it to 2048mb of ram VMbox crashes at the Windows splash screen. Strange.

Ahm, sorry, meant the unread posts in "40 posts in last 15 days:" am not like where they show (+x) on main tabs (It'd be easier to keep track of discussions I actually participate in)

That's funny. I just noticed that the sites end with the same letters I end my perl script filenames with.

Well, yeah, 'cause Fark's written in Perl :)

I saw an odd MS office behavior that I've not encountered before. It would seem that after a while of being on a friends machine starts doing abnormal things with the various office apps. Namely, all the keys act as thought the shift was held down, numbers are symbols, lower case is caps etc.. The menus also go full retard. Selecting save gets you an open document window, Print gets a formatting window. Any ideas? Could this be a memory issue somehow? 2GB on XP. Nothing is apparently sluggish.

  2009-05-12 02:34:46 PM
Hit both shift keys a few times so that it realizes the shift keys aren't actually stuck. Or check the StickyKeys option in the Accessibility control panel.

  2009-05-13 12:13:53 AM
and make sure the keyboard's regional settings aren't set to UK or Russia or some sh*t in the control panel

One of our computers was acting up the other day, like the Ctrl key was held down. Turned out my co-worker had been testing a PS2 bar code scanner and it turded up the keyboard until reboot

Is there a way to pull streaming audio info from a webpage with an embedded media player?

my cellphone (Sprint Touch Pro) has a built in program for streaming media, called Streaming Media for Pocket PC, Version 3.0h. what i'm trying to do, is stream from this page (Link) to my cellphone, so i can listen to tonight's NHL game through the phone.

i've tried going to this page on both the Opera browser and the IExplorer browser on the cellphone, but neither will stream like that. Is there a way to get the stream info from the page, and enter it into my Streaming Media program? the program asks for an "rtsp://" input for the streaming media. can i find that somewhere from the live stream page?

Update on my problem: It seems that my Linux Asus Eee claims that I don't have "enough permissions" to use ANY external memory devices, from external hard drives to thumb drives to MiniSD Cards, and it's really starting to PISS ME OFF. Can anyone tell me what the hell its problem is?

Has anyone every used Spicebird for email? Ive tried it but have not been enthralled. If anyone has used it do you know how to export the mail and calendar data so that it can be imported into thunderbird or outlook? It seems like it makes individual folders for each mail folder within the app. The file format doesn't appear to be recognized by other email clients.

Maybe, maybe not.
Can't say since I'm a dirty furriner and am not allowed to access that site with my IP address.

If it's some shiatty flash player that's embedded in the site, I would have a look at
a) the source code and/or
b) the HTTP-Headers (for example with the LiveHttpHeader-Plugin for Mozilla) when you hit "play".

Some simple sites pass the real address of the stream as a parameter into their generic Flash player ("a)"), some others use an AJAXy-Flashy player that gets the stream via HTTP from somewhere else("b)").
If it doesn't use HTTP, you could have a look at the network traffic to see where the embedded player is getting its stream from.

i've tried looking at the source code, and cannot find any reference to a stream that i'd know what to do with, it looks like a WMPlayer in javascript. the player doesn't work in Firefox, and only seems to work in IE with an ActiveX plugin. if you really want to see the source code, it's here

Hi! I'm about to embarrass myself.

I have never used backup utilities. Ever. I have lost data before. Now I have a drive to specifically backup to, but I don't completely understand what will happen when I run it.

I want to reinstall my operating system, another thing I haven't done in a couple years. I'm pretty sure my system is sick, I seem to have a Vundo virus that no amount of removal seems to correct - trust me, I have tried.

When I backup, am I going to be backing up, like, everything? Including the dreaded Vundo? The embarrassing part here is I just am unfamiliar with the backup procedure, and what will happen. Can someone advise? How embarrassing.

  2009-05-15 05:15:56 PM
I'm just gonna do it and find out.

  2009-05-15 05:24:35 PM

What's so hard about dragging and dropping your files onto another drive?

FuturePastNow: What's so hard about dragging and dropping your files onto another drive?

if he tries to do this with the entire C drive (which i'm betting is what he's going to do) it's going to error out on any file that is locked by the OS, and the entire backup will fail, and he won't know where it stopped, etc..

Brodan, you'll want to definitely back up all your important stuff, files, pictures, music, videos, etc.. generally your "My Documents" folder (assuming you're on WinXP) and anywhere else you tend to save things. don't try to copy the entire hard drive to another hard drive.

unless you have a program for creating a ghost image or an image backup of your OS that you want to restore (which is a bad idea if you have a virus), you won't be able to just copy everything over. go through your files, see what you need to save and what you can get rid of. when you reinstall the OS, you'll have to reinstall all of your old programs (hopefully you still have access to the original media).

  2009-05-15 08:34:14 PM
Some things to remember when you're backing up your data:

-emails
-IM logs
-bookmarks

At least, those are things I forgot when I reinstalled Windows four or five years ago.

Damn, that's the part I was fuzzy on. I really really don't want to reinstall all my programs, but that virus has to go.

Thx for the advice man.

Windows Media DRM crap if necessary.

I once reinstalled Windows for a friend who had used Windows Media Player to rip her CDs to have them on her computer - since it she was on dial-up and WMP was convenient, she didn't bother with MP3 encoding and an additional ripper program, but simply used WMP with default settings, i.e. without her (or my) knowledge she had created a pile of DRMed WMA files that wouldn't play anymore after reinstalling the OS since I didn't know about that local DRM database file and didn't save it..

There's the LHC site, which has a news page that links to their semi-weekly bulletin.
