obviously not a geek: is there a way to hook up a camera phone to your pc direct to download pictures/video or do you have to send via email to your pc? any thoughts are appreciated

Depends on the phone. Some come with USB cables, Bluetooth, or both that may allow you to do this. Other have SD or memory stick cards that you can just pop out and stick into your computer or card reader. Basically, it's all over the map and depends on what you have, so your best bet is to Google your phone and/or see what the manual says.

gayb: Holy f*cking sh*t, this might actually be a real ad for a real product. Is MS trying to bring down all of civilization? My GOD.

"Microsoft, huh? So it's pretty easy to use?"

I lol'd. I thought it had to be a parody, but the website seems to be real.

So I FTP stuff from my eeepc to my Mac Mini... I have a new router and tried doing it over the wireless and it was extremely slow, around 90 kilobytes a second. Signal is good and internet access over the wireless is fast. On my old gear, with the wired connection I could FTP and about 11 megabytes a second. It's a 100Mbit router.

Any ideas? (apart from trying a cable and seeing if it's still slow - I'm getting me a 20m cable later)

Is this a wireless G router? Theoretical throughput on 54G is 27.3Mpbs. If both clients are wirelss you can chop that in half so you're looking at 13.5Mbps in each direction-theoretically. Throw in some collisions and renegotionation and you've got your sloowww speed.

Long story short-get a cable.

Fenis-Wolf:
Theoretical throughput on 54G is 27.3Mpbs

The theoretical maximum throughput of 54G is 54Mbps. It's not just a clever name. That's Megabit per second. Not byte. This is abnormally slow. I should be getting 4-6 Megabytes per second.

  2009-01-15 08:13:15 PM
O'Reilly (new window) disagrees. 54G is 54 megaBIT per second-at the very best you will get 6.75 megaBYTES over 54G. Assuming one way traffic and no collisions as I said.

  2009-01-15 08:17:01 PM
Thanks Benny and Fenis.

that's exactly what I just said, and not what you said at all. You said it's 27.3 megabits per second (Mbps).

and I'm getting 90 KILOBYTES per second (KBps), which is about 0.1 Megabytes per second (MBps).

I said I should be getting between 4 and 6 Megabytes (MBps) per second.

O'Reilly agrees exactly with what I said, and now I don't think you know what you're talking about. You most certainly don't need to half the bandwidth if both clients are wireless, either. Do you know the different between MB and Mb?

  2009-01-15 08:34:11 PM
that should be: 0.01 Megabytes per second**

  2009-01-16 01:12:03 AM
and it's fine through the cable. Even hit 13MB/s

OK then, what's the code (or Dreamweaver command) for centering an image on the page? Not just horizontally like this, but vertically?

Regarding vertically centering something on a web page:
see that scrollbar over there? --------------------------------------->

That's something that makes the vertical part a bit difficult..

For the horizontal part, a CSS-less way would be

<div align="center"><img src="image url"></div>

  2009-01-16 12:29:28 PM
N. S. Radieaux: what's the code (or Dreamweaver command) for centering an image on the page (vertically)?

CSS: vertical-align: middle;

Keep in mind this centers it based on the size of the parent element.

  2009-01-17 11:54:14 AM
Gah, I hate Microsoft mice. Why do they make the scroll wheel so bad? They must have had a meeting and decided to make it suck.

I installed this nvidia vista64 driver on Win7 64. note the window title

I've heard good things about TigerDirect, but my first experience with them has been total suckage. Did I miss a memo, or just get bad luck of the draw?

  2009-01-19 08:52:45 PM
Most people I know recommend Newegg. Never tried TigerDirect, what did you order? Maybe the part was just a lemon.

  2009-01-19 10:06:47 PM
They've got better customer service than newegg in my opinion. Newegg is all "well, we'll take care of you this ONE time" but TD is all "our bad, we'll fix everything for you, and anything else it takes to keep your business."

One monitor was DOA, but Tiger replaced it and covered the extra shipping charge. I was happy.

  2009-01-19 11:42:06 PM
Haven't even gotten the stuff yet. They took down the order wrong, didn't put in my shipping address (different than billing), screwed up my name which was spelled out for them three times, credit card didn't work because it didn't match my incorrectly spelled name, appear to be shipping to wrong address although no one there is sure where to. Dropped call, and a couple days of an IVR not picking up. I had called before the order was processed to make sure the shipping address was my workplace, but different web sites report different things. So I expect something within the next couple days, but I'm not sure where. At this point all the parts should be the expected parts. We'll see.

Along with other more minor issues.

Man, I've worked in tech support and customer services, so I've been very polite and cool and all to this point, but I'm about to farking lose it. I emailed to ensure at least the one backordered hard drive would be sent to my correct address, but I am getting the runaround, vague answers, and basically "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that".

Can a apache / linux admin tell who (what IP and when) accessed a page, even if this page has no tracking code on it? Maybe some log of some kind thats kept automatically for every visitor on every page? Is there a setting for this?

Yes.

Maybe some log of some kind thats kept automatically for every visitor on every page?
Yes.

Is there a setting for this?
Yes.

It's done via the apache config and it's usually enabled as a default, so if you don't want to log the IP addresses, you usually have to change the values.
The log files itself are usually somewhere under /var/log/, e.g. /var/log/httpd/ or /var/log/apache.

There are also programs to analyze apache log files, for example lots of web hosters use "webalizer" so their customers can get a few stats about the visitors their website had.

Thanks Benny and V o' D. Now that I've finally updated my site, I have one last question:

Google is still linking to obsolete pages that I've removed. I've read that I can train robots to prevent search engines from linking to my site, but I do I arrange them to stop the search engines from linking to particular pages? (Hints on how to get my main page to the top of the search engine results for searches on my name are also appreciated.)

Google "robots.txt" and you'll find information on how to set up a proper file. Note that bots are supposed to follow those rules but that doesn't necessarily mean they will.

You can also Google for "search engine optimization" and read more than you'll ever want to know about SEO. Google has a section of their site discussing that topic.

I bought 4 seasons of House on DVD and played them on my laptop with no problem.

I had to reformat my computer when Fark had some ad trouble, and now I can't get the DVD to play on my desktop computer. WMP says I am missing a "dvd codec" and I have to pay to download one?

I know I'm an idiot when it comes to computer related things, but do I really have to purchase one from Microsoft? Thanks for any help.

  2009-01-23 01:23:38 PM
PacersJAM3s

I'm assuming it's XP?

You'll have to install some "real" DVD player software first to be able to play DVDs with WMP; programs like WMP and other free media players will then use the DVD-decoding library that the "real" player did install.

Chances are that your computer came with an OEM version of a DVD player software like WinDVD or PowerDVD (sometimes those are re-branded; my Asus laptop came with "AsusDVD" and that was basically PowerDVD with an Asus skin).

You should look through your CDs if you still have an ancient installation disc and key for such a player and install it.
Once it is installed, WMP and others should also be able to play DVDs.

VLC also plays DVDs because it has libdvdcss2

One of the reasons I switched OSes (loves her some Kaffiene).

//not being a smug linux user... just sayin'.

VLC runs on a bunch of operating systems, and OS X Leopard, Vista (Home Premium upwards) all have DVD playback out-of-the-box.

Linux distros generally don't because that lib I mentioned is non-free

Take THAT, smug linux user :P

No biggie. No problem to install with Synaptic or Adept (or command line for some). I think Kaffeine comes with Kubuntu regardless (though you have to add libdvdcss2 whatever). Instructions in Kubuntu FAQ just off main page.

It was XP time when I switched. Didn't know Vista is different... though I can't be bothered with Vista now for other reasons. Only upgraded my motherboard and processor this past week. Last time was eight years ago. The only reason I'm doing so now is because the motherboard has a flaw which makes it extremely picky with RAM (and I'd finally like a new toy). Doing just fine running on 256MB until now. How about you?

Linux has some bullshiat, but at least it's all bullshiat I can know and control. That seals it for me right there. "It's MY computer!" and all that.

Anyone care to help?

Looking for a web app that would allow user comments on a website (it's not a blog, but want a similar feel). Would prefer it to run with windows asp.net, since the goal is to host it on a site that runs with that. Any suggestions/helpful hints?

  2009-01-26 10:40:27 PM
Looks like the damn thing's finally working. Thanks again, Benny.

  2009-01-27 02:11:26 AM
Most of the forum apps out there are PHP (vbulletin, phpbb, etc) but there are at least a few .NET ones. popforums.com is one ASP.NET one, not free though (written for coasterbuzz.com)

XP on 256MB? You are very patient :)

I found XP ran fine at first, but after a couple years, even a format & re-install couldn't fix it. Add in spyware, bloated registry, media players and software that make you jump through hoops, wonky drivers for my ethernet and video card... then I got my first virus ever, which I could not remove without an f&r... well, that pushed me over the edge and I figured if I was going to try another OS, may was well be then.

And then I discovered my system was four times faster than I thought it was. Considering the life & financial situation I was in at the time, it was a big deal for me.

Not to say that Linux is without hiccups. I keep a blog solely to keep track of little issues I encounter (pretty hand to use as a task list for myself)... if I get around to looking for a solution, I find one, add it in there, and actually post the note. Helped quite a few other people this way, too.

Also, as a result, I've finally figured out what I want to do with my life. It's openness (with both the OS and community) has allowed me to tinker and learn. I've always been a jack of all trades sort.

Favorite trick: If you accidentally download a Nero image instead of a normal image, you can strip off the first 300 bytes to get a normal disc image.

dd bs=1k if=image.nrg of=image.iso skip=300

//pretty pretty command line
//*pats command line on head*

Penis. That is kewl.

  2009-01-27 02:53:20 PM
yeah, dd is handy for all sortsa stuff, like recovering data from failing hard drives :)

  2009-01-27 02:54:10 PM
...or erasing drives you're going to sell (dd /dev/random and/or /dev/zero onto the block device)

  2009-01-27 04:37:40 PM
I just used dd yesterday to copy a Dell documentation CD. Definitely a handy command.

N. S. Radieaux - you're welcome, glad I could help.

I just got back from a tour of a nintendo lab in Japan and got to try some new stuff that may make it into the next console. Pretty cool, but I had to screw with it. We were standing around kinda informally and I put the headset on, then thought, why dont I put on a tinfoil hat first to see if it really does stop brainwaves. So I did, much to their amusement, and it did stop the device from working. Farking cool. Tnfoil hats do stop brainwaves from being readable. (One of them mentioned some kind of piezoelectric effect causing interference)

I've got an easy one for the geniuses in the geek forum.

I have a Dell Precision 690 with a Xeon 5150 dual core processor, 700 watt power supply and 4gb of ram, running XP pro.

There is space on the motherboard for a second processor, and I want to know what I would need to do to install another 5150.

  2009-01-29 07:09:14 PM
Find another of whatever heatsink/fan fits that case, and then just buy the cpu.

  2009-01-29 09:11:17 PM
I won't need a bigger power supply?
