Shiat-my farky's acting up too, speaking of FF extentions, any idea why farky 1.11 would be hiding random threads? I have no filters set up...

You might email 920 about it. I think he's got a working, up-to-date version. He usually hooks up LPers, but I haven't used it in a while, so am not really paying attention. Looks like getfarky.com is still up too, but you appear to have the latest version.

Barakku: No_47: I'm not sure if this has been added by an extension I'm using or if it's part of Firefox, but try
Right Click anywhere on page -> Reload Every -> (choose time)
Right Click anywhere on page -> Reload Every -> Enable

and yeha I think it 404s when you go offline

Sounds like what I need, but not a default part of firefox-any idea what extension that might be?

the Reload Every Firefox plugin.

My desktop went pop, a capacitor gave way from what I can see (one is bulged with liquid coming out). Does anyone know if I can just build a new PC and plug my old HD in and have it boot up? Or will the NTSF file system have a cow if it sees a new MB and CPU?

  2008-10-04 11:31:36 PM
It won't care, except:

- It'll bluescreen on boot if it sees a different ATA/SATA chipset than the one the old board had, but, that can be worked around by booting in safe mode and changing the driver.

- If you go from a single-core CPU to a multi-core CPU you'll need to switch the HAL that Windows is using to get the second CPU going; that's not super simply to do, but it can be done...

- Obviously you'll need to reinstall drivers for anything onboard that's different, like the audio hardware, ethernet, video etc... that's easy though, provided you don't get stuck in a chicken-n-egg problem like having no ethernet and being unable to download ethernet drivers :)

Thanks for the reply.

You can also install an OS on a new HD, and slave the old HD to get your copious amounts of prawn off it.

That's not an answer to your question though.

If you have a Microsoft product, it might flip out over the hardware change. I hope you have your original activation key.

the Reload Every Firefox plugin.

I think it might be part of Tab Mix Plus (which I use to modify the appearance of tabs and placement of buttons - it's actually quite cool)

Also, referring to another question, I've found that NT-based windows rarely boots with a new motherboard. Even if a machine is running and you uninstall all the drivers first. It just bluescreens and there's no way to fix it.

  2008-10-05 05:07:00 AM
I'd also like to state, for the record, that there's no way in hell Kubuntu Intrepid is going to be ready by the 30th, and I suspect they'll drop back to KDE 3.5 sometime in the next couple of weeks.

This sh*t is buggy.

That's the ATA driver issue I was talking about; change it to "generic IDE" before swapping boards (or in Safe Mode) and it tends to go a lot better. Otherwise you can get an INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE bluescreen...

  2008-10-05 02:17:40 PM
That not the usual bluescreen I get. I think it's 0x0000007B and/or 7E. Most of the time it doesn't even boot to safe mode.

0x0000007B = INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE :)

I need some design help if anyone can right now -

I'm trying to use a font my client wants on her website, but it's not recognized when it goes online. What can I do?

Explain how the web works and that no visitor of the site will see it in the cool font if the visitor doesn't happen to have that cool font installed on their computer by coincidence?

That's why there are fall-back fonts in CSS.

  2008-10-06 01:07:13 AM
>:(

Font issues are my nemesis (I work in a small print shop).

Problems usually start when people use a medium for other than its intended purpose (i.e. using Excel or Visio to design a raffle ticket or postcard).

Admittedly, the web is more flexible and does evolve to meet unintended consequences...

Would you care to elaborate? I haven't looked at Intrepid yet nor have I used KDE 4 with Hardy Heron. Are the bugs easily reproducible? Is it particular applications that are buggy or all of them?

Was/is Intrepid going to be a LTS release? I was just curious about that because Ubuntu Hardy Heron was an LTS but we Kubuntu users got a standard release.

  2008-10-06 01:46:06 PM
Would an acceptable solution be to use the font to make an image or something that preserves its visual integrity?

  2008-10-06 04:23:39 PM
Depends on how slow they want the page to load, and if they reeeeeally wanna use Photoshop to edit all their text vs using a text editor like everyone else...

  2008-10-06 08:52:14 PM
Late thanks for help with the firefox thing, not exactly what I wanted, but seems to not fark anything up.

Mike: Depends on how slow they want the page to load, and if they reeeeeally wanna use Photoshop to edit all their text vs using a text editor like everyone else...

If they want it to load even slower, they could make every web page as a pdf.

Hey, that would solve the font issue.

I've got a pc here that memtest failed on after 8 hours and 7 passes... with a "unexpected interrupt" "type: divide"

I don't really have any choice but to swap out hardware and run it for another 8 hours, do i?

Nope. Have fun with your dead RAM stick.

Playing with a new laptop tonight, having some fun, have a question.

First, the fun Ive been having. :-) It came with a webcam built into the frame above the screen. I put real vnc on it, set it in my garage, and am now sitting in my computer room watching a cricket wander around the garage. Fun! Tomorrow Im going to set it by the lizard cage. They always scurry and hide when I walk by... I know theyre up to something...

Anyway, the question : How are these people finding their stolen laptops over the internet? Unless you set up something that did something like automatically emailed yourself once a day, how would you get it back?

Undercover, if it's a Mac. (orbicule.com doesn't allow me to hotlink it here)

Can someone inform me as to what domains I need to add to my hosts file to block the crap on the Geek tab that has appeared today? I can't visit the Geek tab because it crashes Camino every time it tries to load whatever has magically appeared here.

Grr, the actual image is hosted at img2.fark.net

So far I haven't found anything else that's at img2: tags are either at img0 or img1, so you could try blocking img2 specifically and see if that works. The link goes to vator.tv so I'd probably block the, too.

It's crap like that, though, that makes me use the PDA version of the site (http://www.fark.com/geek/pda.html for the geek page, http://www.fark.com/pda.html for the main). Of course, that's mainly 'cause I'm browsing *from* a PDA most of the time, but it works on "real" computers, too.

I'm still confused about some things, perhaps you can help:

-- Was the person whose pary were with the father the same person who first asked how babby is formed, or was he mocking the asker? Or it a different story entirely?

-- How could John Freeman have shot the headcrab oficer in the head if he ddint have weapon?

-- Did the original intro to Zero Wing have any spoken dialogue, or was that added in later by fanboys?

I got my first web related cease and desist, woot!

Basically, I was a programmer for company x. Company went through a layoff, so I started my own programming site and cited some work I did and linked to it.

I think I will mail them back the letter, after I wipe with it. Can only add value.

I should probably retract my previous comments about Kubuntu Intrepid. The updates have been coming thick and fast (daily), and it's getting more stable and faster every time.

also, the latest linux nvidia driver is a pretty serious release

I will likely be in charge of building a media center PC for someone soon- typically I use on board sound, and have never bought a soundcard before... any recommendations for a good sound card? This guy is a total musicphile, so I want to make sure that what I get for him is going to sound really good- he's not great with computers though, so I also would like something that has the minimum (if any) software that he'll be worrying about.

Also, I hated Windows Media Center with a passion. I figure his current computer has XP, and I've never used Vista... do any of you feel that Vista has a better media playback interface? I would prefer to us XP Pro because I've had such a good experience with it, he's probably most familiar with it, it's cheaper, and the system requirements are pretty low compared to vista with all it's shiny crap running. Yay or Nay?

  2008-10-12 08:26:34 PM
The Vista Media Center is light years ahead of the XP Media Center. Apart from that, you're pretty much stuck with Foobar 2000, Winamp, or WMP 11.

If you end up getting a Creative sound card, beware that the vista drivers are neutered.

  2008-10-13 01:18:38 AM
I have a bluegears sound card, and it's wonderful. But I only use it in XP and Linux. Who knows how it would do in Vista.

ASUS soundcards are supposedly very good.

  2008-10-13 05:06:32 PM
If he's a musicphile, his home theater/stereo/whatever amp might have an optical (SP/DIF) input, and if the onbound sound has an optical output, you're good to go with just that...

Random purchasing questions(relevant enough?):

1: Keep destroying my earbuds, anything that's nice and durable that anyone can recommend? Within reasonable price, at least; I can get nice "Gummi" JVC earbuds for 10 bucks with good quality/sound. And they're green!

2: Cool tablet PC crap anyone? I found a nice art program (ArtRage for $20) and Vista works wonders for working the comp with my pen, but are there just any fun/helpful/ect apps anyone uses?
One specific thing I'm looking for (may not be "just" for tablets) is something to swap the windows bar when I swap screen modes (it's a hybrid, laptop, then swivel and it's a clipboard-like tablet for the pen) so that I can have it automatically/at the press of a button swap the bar/other settings? I already have something to swap the wallpaper when I do that, was wondering if there's any similar stuff out there.

/Tell me I'm not the only one with a tablet

How long do yours last? I go thru a pair about once every 6 mo, but Im rough on my toys. I find no real difference in durability between expensive and cheap ones, so Id recomend any below $15.

going through earbuds is pretty much a constant with me.

what angers me is that whenever I find a decent kind, they stop making it. I guess I should hoard them whenever I find ones I like.

/I'm looking at you, sennheiser.

My opinion about Sennheiser ear plugs:
Great sound, but I'm convinced their plugs (at least in the 20-30 Euro range with cable volume control) are made with weak points that are going to break pretty quickly.
The three pairs I got during the last year or so all didn't last very long - and surely not long enough for the prices that Sennheiser is asking.

I recommend to keep the receipt if you buy Sennheiser - you might need it to get a replacement in case they come with a warranty.

About 3 months of heavy use?ish. These have been stepped on...at least once (that's not common...honest!) but they're starting to come appart in various ways. Not all of them foot-related. Figured with most products there's little difference, but figured there may be some construction worker-type thing. Tempted to get those MGS codec like things that stimulate your ear bones directly, I can't take the muffs off those/ect. Not sure if I wanna buy 200 dollar or something insane for something I can't even try first.

I know the military has hardware thats rated 'tougher' than civillian counterparts. For instance, you can get a plain old resistor, or a military grade one. I wonder if theres military grade earbuds?

Ironically all I can seem to find are military grade headphones-military grade noise cancellation that is, which I'm not looking for. Probably just gonna pick up a new set of cheap JVCs, they're always high quality.

I have Planet Earth on HD-DVD. Wanted the series in high def, but was stupidly impatient about acquiring it, and didn't even wait to have a player for it.

So what's the best option for viewing the content? Sucking it up and re-buying it on BR? I would prefer having the entire series in digital form on a hard drive, so would it be easier to find an HD-DVD drive to rip it with? Or would it be cheaper and simpler to find the last HD-DVD player in existence and buy that JUST for one set of discs?

Not really in a hurry to move up to high def entertainment, but if there's a cheap option to watch what I have right now...

I used a tablet PC years ago... for work. I never used any cool software, though. All I can help you with is breaking the handwriting recognition.
