You can get a PCI video card for it, but no, a PCIe card won't fit, or work, no matter how hard you push it in. Hope you didn't already waste your money.

skink: HAI GUYZ...

Can I use a PCI express video card in a PCI expansion slot?

I have:

eMachines Model c2881-

Intel Celeron D 2.66mhz (Stop laughing!)

Chipset Intel 845GV

3 x PCI expansion slots.

Trying to upgrade, it currently has NO video card.

No, and if you try it, you will be made fun of by internet nerds for all time.

That is beautiful. It's been a long time since I've seen that. Nice card, too. Wonder if that voids the warranty.

I think I can safely say that it does.

Oh, man...Not even I am that stupid.

Thanks for the input, guys.

I think the answer to my troubles may be an EVGA GeForce 6200.

Not a hardcore game nut, but I want Civ4 and Age of Empires 3 to run.

The good news is, PCI cards are getting hella cheap. Looks like I can get this one for under $50.

For my next question:

My retractable cup holder appears to be broken.....

PCI cards are arse.
About the best you can get is a Geforce 5200, and they're just plain terrible.

I'd highly recommend a new computer.

Some company makes a PCI Geforce 8400GS.

  2008-09-08 02:27:23 AM
Of course, even an 8400GS, crappy as it is, would be limited by the PCI bus.

Go with the 6200 if you don't want to replace your whole computer. It should be able to decode most video formats and drive a monitor up to 1920x1200, which I don't think an FX5200 will do.

  2008-09-08 02:53:25 PM
Thanks, FPN...replacing the PC is out till wife gets a laptop!

DO NOT GO WITH THE 8400 GS.

I speak from personal experience. Save the extra 70-80 bucks and get an 8800 GTS.

Ain't gonna stick that in a regular old PCI slot.

Look, just because you bought a low-end card without doing any research, doesn't make it a bad card.

Uh yeah, as FPN said, the card you suggested won't fit in a regular PCI slot anyways.

I've got a PCIe 8400something, and it's a low end card that won't cure AIDS, but it works. It's not going to suplode instantly after installation.

It's a great card for people whose idea of gaming is playing The Sims, or for a home theater PC.

Some Questions.

What is the distance limit for VGA?
Do they make a Bnc - Vga adapter? not vga-5bnc

Thanks

Hello Dolly: Some Questions.

depends on the resolution you're trying to put through it.

10 meters is probably about the max.

  2008-09-10 11:18:11 AM
you can't get vga down to a single bnc plug; 3 is the minimum (if you cram all the sync signals onto the green wire like DEC used to do) and 5 is preferable.

  2008-09-10 11:19:35 AM
if distance is the goal, I think there are ways to cram VGA (and DVI) onto fiber.

Windows vista print functionality is quite frankly the shiattiest piece of crap Ive ever witnessed. I could probably find video of a fat mexican taking a diahreah jalapeno dump in the tijuana sewer and not feel as dirty as I do when forced to mess with vista.

Fark you MS.

I don't know what that has to do with us, but I'm guessing it's a user issue. What's the problem?

  2008-09-10 05:52:23 PM
anyone have any good host-based firewall software suggestions? we're trying to completely lock down a user at work who will be getting a laptop and an aircard. we need to be able to block outgoing traffic to all sites except the few sites we approve to be visited.

  2008-09-10 06:44:27 PM
Is it a Vista machine?
The parental controls can do that. They're pretty good.

Anyone know of a way to tell if a video card has been overclocked?

nope, XP. and the Windows Firewall in XP only blocks incoming requests from accessing your computer/programs, not outgoing requests and individual websites.
we're going to look into just editing the HOSTS file, but i'm not sure if that'll be enough for our security auditors.

Googling the name of the card + "reference clocks" should get you what the manufacturer clocks it at, unless it's a "factory overclocked" model. The driver should show you what the card's actual clock is.

but sif it's been overclocked and then put back..? Say if someone's returning a video card that looks like it's been cooked...

Its not really a 'problem', as it is a 'difference'.

Take this old xp computer, or the ubuntu box at work, or the mac machine my wife uses. Plug in a usb printer. Go into word, file->print. Walk out with your printed material.

Take a vista laptop, plug in a usb printer. file->print. Save as? wtf why am I saving as? I want it to print, ok whatever save as whatever.[extension i never heard of]. Open file dialog box opens. Unable to find app that can open this. Huh? Ok, fark this, open control panel, drag document onto the printer icon. Wait, theres 7. Which one? Try first one... printer error. Hmm cancel that, next one... same thing. Wait, Ill email it to myself and print it off my linux machine! Open ff, gmail, mail sent woot, open docx on linux... wait, wont work, need patch or something, try it on XP box... wait, STILL WONT WORK!!! WTF this is a xp box, it of all things should work with other windows software... fark it I got a hacked xp pro laptop, put docx on a usb drive, tadaa, it works!

Moral of the story : MS is total shiat.

Did you kill a graphics card?

I don't know, honestly. I have to assume that the factory can tell if it has been damaged by overheating, or too much voltage, but I don't know what a normal person would look for.

Never had a problem printing on Vista. It recognized my printer, no drivers needed. I click on print and it prints.

  2008-09-11 03:38:06 PM
Not every printer sets itself as the default printer after being installed, and if you've installed Office 07, it does install a faux-printer (i forget why) and it does set that as default

Print to pdf, print to file, print to Adobe PDF, or print to Microsoft Image something something? Confused the hell out of my ADHD boss for a while. Sometimes it's in the print dialog, sometimes it's a little checkbox somewhere.

There's an evil little checkbox in the print dialog in Adobe Acrobat too.

If you have it contantly in the print dialog, make sure the default printer is your real printer, not some other junk.

I've been messing around with linux stuff today. This one's for Fark: did you know there is an XFCE BSD distro called "FreeS BIE"?

  2008-09-14 11:38:26 AM
Yeah, FreeSBIE's a'ight, I've used it for testing machines before :)

  2008-09-14 12:26:13 PM
I'm feeling the love for XFCE. KDE4 looks like KDE3 with Vista barf all over it.

That and I'm too cheap to upgrade my machine. It's been years. Maybe I'll buy myself a birthday present in a couple months.

  2008-09-14 03:53:57 PM
XFCE doesn't have a good SMB browser. Annoys me.

Really nerdy. 100% nerdy. But it's a good test. If she's a vapid idiot who thinks anything sciency is boring as hell and would rather talk about her toy poodle, dump her ass. Out of the moving car.

I DID IT!

Using the LHC simulator that was linked a few days ago (I can't find the link now) I was able to create a Higgs Boson!

Yes, I realize that it is just a flash program, and I also realize that I am most likely not the first person to pull it off in said flash program, but I am still pretty stoked.

Anyone know how to get the apple wireless keyboard working under Ubuntu 8.04 on a Core Duo Mac Mini?

i'm looking at putting a Forum onto a website i run. so far it'll probably only be used by 10-25 people, but hopefully it will grow over time. i've used phpBB before, and it worked just fine, i'm just curious if there are any better solutions or if anyone has any other suggestions (or if phpBB is the best suggestion).
