Well, I got the one machine working well enough to return it to them.
Now I'm working on an old machine so that I can extend my inventory in Diablo.
I'm running into some problems with this one- I need to set it up for IPX, but for whatever reason I cannot view the network connection. I can access the internet, I can view the computers shared files as a network place, but I just can't view the connections. I've tried the setup wizard a number of different ways and just can't get anything to show the icon, what am I missing?

  2008-08-18 07:20:55 PM
Holy crap- now I've found a way for it to display an internet connection, but it disappears from the network connection area after about 5 minutes. Before it disappears after right clicking and trying to check the status the dialog box that appears flashes for random lengths of time (between about a second and 4 seconds). I found under a menu somewhere once that local area connection 3 is working, but in that menu I'm not able to do anything, and the menus where I can do stuff there are no connections visible.

When I go to I.P. Config in the Run line, the black box opens and then immediately closes, just like the status box.

  2008-08-18 08:20:10 PM
run "cmd" from the Run line instead, then do ipconfig there.

  2008-08-18 08:58:32 PM
Mike: run "cmd" from the Run line instead, then do ipconfig there.

Well, ipconfig shows what looks to be a dandy IP address for "local area connection three" but I can't find this connection anywhere. It's obviously working to some extent because I can get online, and shared folders exist... but I can't configure it in any way shape or form.

Where can I find it so I can configure it?

Using the Power of Fark.

Mechanical Question:

I want to build a sun-tracking mirror to reflect sunlight through my window all day long. The tracking mirror part is easy. But how do I keep the sunlight pointed in my window?

My thought is the primary mirror would be set at 45 degrees to the sun. It would deflect light to a secondary mirror that would remain on target. How do I maintain the orientation of the secondary mirror?

My idea looked something like a geostationry satallite. 1 fixed gear, one free gear, separated by an arm carrying both axis, both on a single plane, both of equal size, looped by a chain?

Your inspiration is most welcome!

Hey all. I have a basic question for you, since I know very little about home networking. I currently have a wired network with an XP computer and a 360 connected through a 4-port router. My wife is getting a laptop from her job today, and we'd like to be able to use its wireless capabilities. After googling a bit, I guess I need to get a wireless access point to connect to my router. Is there something else I need to keep in mind? Something else I need to buy? Thanks for the help, I know nothing about wireless networks, really. Oh, and here's what I was planning to buy, if it matters.

does anyone know how (or if it's possible) to export emails and contacts from Lotus Notes into an Outlook .pst? our CFO was using Lotus Notes at his last place of employment, and wants to bring his contacts over to us, where we use Outlook. i have his Lotus .nsf database, and i've installed Lotus Notes 7, and imported his database, but i can only export it as "Structured Text" "CSV" or "Tabular Text". any thoughts?

it seems there are pay programs which will convert the .nsf to a .pst, but we'd rather not pay for that.

  2008-08-20 04:40:22 PM
If I was you I'd just reaplce my entire router with a wireless router.
One less bit of junk to worry about.

The only other thing to keep in mind is wireless security. Use WPA.

My thoughts, too.
For some reason they even seem to be cheaper?!?:
For example, I use the WRT54G instead of the WAP54G you linked.

it can, but it seems when i export from Lotus to CSV, it only exports the headers of the emails, and not the entire message. and every program that will just convert the .nsf to a .pst costs like $250+

I think I could do it for less ;)

Idea 1:
Do you have a Lotus Domino server?
Because you can query those with POP3..

Idea 2:
Can you program or does your company have someone who can?
There are some nifty programming APIs to access Notes.
I'm by no way a Notes expert, but 5-6 years ago I did a lot of programming with the Java API for Notes (writing Notes' "Agents" and Servlets that access and work with notes databases).
I think I even wrote an agent to access my mail inbox for fun.

It should be pretty easy to dump those emails and whatever else in that NSF in any format you want; something like:
* some standard call(s) to initialize API-internal stuff
* open the database (nsf)
* do a "database.getAllDocuments()" or something like "database.getDocuments(some query)" and then iterate over the returned DocumentCollection with "getNextDocument()" [back then those collections were linked lists internally, so don't use "getNthDocument(index)" ;-) ]
* each NotesDocument in the collection is just a number of key/value pairs, with keys for emails (probably) being stuff like "Subject", "From" etc.

Since I wasn't sure anymore whether one needs a domino server for the programming approach, I did some googleing out of curiosity and came across this:
Domingo JAVA-API

That (and don't forget to do the "installation" part first) looks like a pretty straightforward example of what I had in mind:
The "Getting Started" part I linked above is pretty much exactly doing (for you) the
* some standard call(s) to initialize API-internal stuff
* open the database (nsf)

part I didn't go into detail about.

The "FAIL" tag was a stupid idea. It's a goddamn meme. It's already stale and annoying, and has been for awhile. The Fark brass should know better than this. It is time for a new tag or two, though, I agree. Not that my opinion matters one teeny tiny bit. Maybe the tags are fine.. they just need some makeovers.

The "FAIL" tag was a stupid idea.

I don't care much for its existence, but I think it's bad that its design makes it stand out like a sore thumb (though maybe that's intended):

* most (all? I'm too lazy to look) of the tags without pictures have black as the foreground color and not as the background - except NEWS, I believe
* the font is bolder than the font used in most (all?) of the other tags, including other tags with only a few letters like HERO and SAD
* white on black makes it look like a "FUNERAL" tag; should have switched the color scheme with SAD or something

Lately Ive been noticing the status bar in the bottom left pulling data from m1.2mdn.net. Usually it just stops the page from being displayed (all I see after 5 mins of waiting is a blank white page). This m1 thing is all over the place, from you tube to yahoo, but does not act in a consistent manner. It seems to be ad related, and I do have adblock running, but sometimes it forcibly takes over, forewarding me to another page, whereupon hitting back just restarts the cycle.

Anyone else experiencing this? Could this be DNS poisoning?

Ok guys-

one of the coworkers of my wife bought a computer at a garage sale... it's a windows 98 box with XP installed and a 566 mhz processor, 64mb of ram, and dialup modem... they brought it to me because my wife told them I was a computer whiz and they couldn't use it because it's locked up. There are four accounts. Two of them are email addresses, one is "owner" and one is "guest." I can go into the guest account just fine without a password, all others are password protected. The guest account is just that- it's got pretty much no rights to do anything- the computer does not have works or word (which was the whole reason that they bought it) and I have old copies of works that I would like to put on it just so he has something better than notepad but at the same time, I can't install it without access to an admins account.

I've tried "password" but am all out of ideas. How can I recover this machine for them?

I have XP CDs but I do not have the XP cd used for the install on this computer. Will I be able to do a restore from one of my XP CDs or does Micro$oft not like this
//

Easy fix,,,,,drop it off a the nearest rooftop, I suggest 5 floors or more, and watch it expload.

//no problemo,,,

and I just plain don't like flash sh*t loading automatically. I've never been Rick Rolled.
Also, I only get 50GB a month, and every KB counts.

My god. You've never lived.

I do understand that bandwidth limit though. Sucks. I'll have one that's about 5 or 10 when I'm in oz for a couple months. Lame.

No_47: Also, I only get 50GB a month, and every KB counts.

I don't have a limit, but my download speed is so slow I doubt I could get 50GB in a month. So the less crap a page tries to load, the better.

  2008-08-23 03:35:30 AM
basically every internet connection in NZ has a data cap, but as a result we don't really have a traffic shaping, because the data is paid for.

one particular isp has a "torrent" plan where you get 75GB a month between midnight and 8am totally free, and pay something like $1.50/GB at other times.

Ugh, okay this has me farking stumped. So I got nailed with Trojan.Blusod last night. Thought I cleaned everythign out, blew out my Hosts file because it was seriously screwed but everytime I try to go Symantec/Trendmicro/WindowsUpdate/any site in general I get redirected to a spam bullshiat search engine site.

When I ping Trend or Symatec it's going to the loopback address and I can't figure out where else to look. Ran Spybot, Adaware, full symantec scan and I'm still lost.

Any thoughts Farkers?

everytime I try to go Symantec/Trendmicro/WindowsUpdate/any site in general I get redirected to a spam bullshiat search engine site.

Maybe, instead of using (just) the host file, the thing changed your DNS server settings to use some evil server instead of one from your ISP?
What do your network connection properties or "ipconficg /all" say about that?

When I ping Trend or Symatec it's going to the loopback address and I can't figure out where else to look.

The other thing:
they resolve those sites to your local address but your HTTP requests return some search/spam site?
This could mean that you either have some crap running on port 80 (some light webserver returning that search/spam site) or that your browser is set to use some evil proxy server (local or remote).

I can't figure out where else to look

"Hijack this" might give some additional info.
You could also try some online scanner like kaspersky's here.
(www.kaspersky.com did resolve to 85.12.57.107 for me in case that also gets redirected)

Ugh; One of my coworkers wanted to find out why his system was slow, so he gave it to me.

Turns out that this mook has McAfee, Eset Security, WinXp Antivirus (which teh googles says is a piece of Malware), and is so decrepit that it will rarely even successfully boot with a keyboard, and maybe one out of four tries will let me boot into the UBCD menus to try out the antivirus suites on it. When I do successfully get into the UBCD menus, either the computer will restart and then boot skipping the CD (which is strange because I've changed the boot sequence to CD drive only, disabling the hard drive on boot) into XP... it was built in 2002... I am going to give it back to him as I found it and tell him that he needs a new computer. The problem is that I can't find one on Dell, after Warranty, for less than 800 bucks. I was hoping I could find him something for about 300 with a warranty and XP...

Anyone know where I could find one?

If not, why not just format the drive and put fresh WinXP on? Then grab the drivers from Dell site, do Windows updates, etc.
He will then have a working computer.

I doubt, knowing this guy, that he has the Windows XP cd or even knows what that is. He brought it to me saying that it wouldn't connect to the internet; his wireless network card had fallen out of it's slot. Plus, the machine is over 6 years old. I ran the UBCD hard drive diagnostic and it didn't come up with any errors though, so maybe the drive is still good.

Plus, I'll be spending 2 weeks at the Dell site trying to find those drivers. Dell offers reasonably good driver support- except for old hardware. They give you a list of drivers and make you cherry pick which ones you think will work. I've gotten bad drivers from their site too.

XP Antivirus is difficult to remove when you're running the OS it's infected. Very difficult due to the drivers it installs. smitfraudfix, combofix an spybot will possibly kill it. The other stuff (real security software) can be turned off in safe mode (in msconfig and services.msc) and then removed once the machine boots.

You don't need his XP CD, just any XP CD that matches the licensed version on the COA.

and Dell has comprehensive driver support.

Turns out the mook has two other computers at home.

He couldn't find his Dell driver CD's or his OS disc; until he finds those I'm not proceeding. He's thinking about getting a new computer.

I would put good money he or one of his family members clicked on one of those "YOUR COMPUTER COULD BE INFECTED!!!!!1111!!!" popups.

No one ever keeps their discs. Ever.
I've sold so much Office 2007 because everyone "borrowed" their friends Office discs and then their hard drives died.

I DON'T EVEN LIKE MICROSOFT OFFICE!

The PCI section of SIW is helpful in identifying hardware.
