Probably the wrong spot to post this but wtf.. every time I try to view a YouTube clip in the Video tab, I get the 'We're sorry, this video is no longer available' message. But if I go to the YouTube link it works just fine. Any ideas?

No_47: delete your cache and cookies

First thing I tried. Just ran into the problem on another site though, so it's obviously something to do with my computer and the embedded viewers themselves, not Fark. Going to try deleting and reinstalling Flash next.

it's almost like people don't read the farq
at all

it's not impossible. for a few days now my account / IP address has been flagged as a "spam" IP by the fark server/admins/gods and thus all my posts were invisible. Not seen by anyone except me - and only when I signed into my account. I twigged on it for two reasons - no one was responding to my comments (I'm boring but not that boring), and when I went back looking for my post, I wouldn't find my original comment, until I signed in. a lovely moderator/admin fixed it for me and I'm visible again.

Posting in a "private" thread would defeat the point of finding out if I'm still invisible, wouldn't it? And no fun. And the best way (in this crowd) to get a response is to tell everyone not to respond. Whole wack of mismatchers on this site. Rebels one and all.

any good open-source/freeware DVR software out there? For XP. I guess a tuner card should go with it, obviously, but I don't know anything about those. Do they support HD content yet?

Any way you can get away from the XP part? Mythbuntu is great but only for Linux. HD is supported (though that's really up to your hardware rather than the software - you'll need a HD capture card).

IE6 & XP SP2. It's something farked up on this particular computer, doesn't happen on any other computer I've tried. I'll probably just wipe and reinstall, it's about time for it anyway.

Ok guys-

one of the coworkers of my wife bought a computer at a garage sale... it's a windows 98 box with XP installed and a 566 mhz processor, 64mb of ram, and dialup modem... they brought it to me because my wife told them I was a computer whiz and they couldn't use it because it's locked up. There are four accounts. Two of them are email addresses, one is "owner" and one is "guest." I can go into the guest account just fine without a password, all others are password protected. The guest account is just that- it's got pretty much no rights to do anything- the computer does not have works or word (which was the whole reason that they bought it) and I have old copies of works that I would like to put on it just so he has something better than notepad but at the same time, I can't install it without access to an admins account.

I've tried "password" but am all out of ideas. How can I recover this machine for them?

I have XP CDs but I do not have the XP cd used for the install on this computer. Will I be able to do a restore from one of my XP CDs or does Micro$oft not like this?

For that old of a computer, I suggest you obtain a Windows 2000 CD somewhere.

That sounds like they wouldn't even like the current setup, so I wouldn't pay that much attention to it (I assume not having the install CD also means not having the serial, certificate of authenticity or whatever else makes a Windows install legit in MS' eyes).
..unless you mean more practical aspects of "not like this", like having to deal with that newer activation and "Genuine Advantage" crap.

You could try "administrator" with a blank password. :)

But there are tools to reset Windows passwords.
For example, the Ultimate Boot CD comes with a tool named Offline NT password and registry editor

Oh. Your. God. It took less than 10 minutes to D/L burn the CD, use the tool, change the passwords, and login.

You, are one of Americas greatest heroes.

Crap. Now it's looping Automatic updates. It tells me that the system has an update that is ready and needs to be installed. Then, when it is nearly finished, it tells me that the update is in "an unstable state" and to continue I must uninstall SP2.

Can I burn SP2 to a CD?

  2008-08-16 07:54:00 PM
I can't uninstall SP2 because it hangs up, but the update that is looping tells me it will continue to check for failed installs of SP2 until I uninstall, and I think that the uninstall is failing because of the damned update. ARG.

Well, I got the one machine working well enough to return it to them.
Now I'm working on an old machine so that I can extend my inventory in Diablo.
I'm running into some problems with this one- I need to set it up for IPX, but for whatever reason I cannot view the network connection. I can access the internet, I can view the computers shared files as a network place, but I just can't view the connections. I've tried the setup wizard a number of different ways and just can't get anything to show the icon, what am I missing?

  2008-08-18 07:20:55 PM
Holy crap- now I've found a way for it to display an internet connection, but it disappears from the network connection area after about 5 minutes. Before it disappears after right clicking and trying to check the status the dialog box that appears flashes for random lengths of time (between about a second and 4 seconds). I found under a menu somewhere once that local area connection 3 is working, but in that menu I'm not able to do anything, and the menus where I can do stuff there are no connections visible.

When I go to I.P. Config in the Run line, the black box opens and then immediately closes, just like the status box.

  2008-08-18 08:20:10 PM
run "cmd" from the Run line instead, then do ipconfig there.

  2008-08-18 08:58:32 PM
Mike: run "cmd" from the Run line instead, then do ipconfig there.

Well, ipconfig shows what looks to be a dandy IP address for "local area connection three" but I can't find this connection anywhere. It's obviously working to some extent because I can get online, and shared folders exist... but I can't configure it in any way shape or form.

Where can I find it so I can configure it?

Using the Power of Fark.

Mechanical Question:

I want to build a sun-tracking mirror to reflect sunlight through my window all day long. The tracking mirror part is easy. But how do I keep the sunlight pointed in my window?

My thought is the primary mirror would be set at 45 degrees to the sun. It would deflect light to a secondary mirror that would remain on target. How do I maintain the orientation of the secondary mirror?

My idea looked something like a geostationry satallite. 1 fixed gear, one free gear, separated by an arm carrying both axis, both on a single plane, both of equal size, looped by a chain?

Your inspiration is most welcome!

Hey all. I have a basic question for you, since I know very little about home networking. I currently have a wired network with an XP computer and a 360 connected through a 4-port router. My wife is getting a laptop from her job today, and we'd like to be able to use its wireless capabilities. After googling a bit, I guess I need to get a wireless access point to connect to my router. Is there something else I need to keep in mind? Something else I need to buy? Thanks for the help, I know nothing about wireless networks, really. Oh, and here's what I was planning to buy, if it matters.

does anyone know how (or if it's possible) to export emails and contacts from Lotus Notes into an Outlook .pst? our CFO was using Lotus Notes at his last place of employment, and wants to bring his contacts over to us, where we use Outlook. i have his Lotus .nsf database, and i've installed Lotus Notes 7, and imported his database, but i can only export it as "Structured Text" "CSV" or "Tabular Text". any thoughts?

it seems there are pay programs which will convert the .nsf to a .pst, but we'd rather not pay for that.

  2008-08-20 04:40:22 PM
If I was you I'd just reaplce my entire router with a wireless router.
One less bit of junk to worry about.

The only other thing to keep in mind is wireless security. Use WPA.

My thoughts, too.
For some reason they even seem to be cheaper?!?:
For example, I use the WRT54G instead of the WAP54G you linked.

it can, but it seems when i export from Lotus to CSV, it only exports the headers of the emails, and not the entire message. and every program that will just convert the .nsf to a .pst costs like $250+

I think I could do it for less ;)

Idea 1:
Do you have a Lotus Domino server?
Because you can query those with POP3..

Idea 2:
Can you program or does your company have someone who can?
There are some nifty programming APIs to access Notes.
I'm by no way a Notes expert, but 5-6 years ago I did a lot of programming with the Java API for Notes (writing Notes' "Agents" and Servlets that access and work with notes databases).
I think I even wrote an agent to access my mail inbox for fun.

It should be pretty easy to dump those emails and whatever else in that NSF in any format you want; something like:
* some standard call(s) to initialize API-internal stuff
* open the database (nsf)
* do a "database.getAllDocuments()" or something like "database.getDocuments(some query)" and then iterate over the returned DocumentCollection with "getNextDocument()" [back then those collections were linked lists internally, so don't use "getNthDocument(index)" ;-) ]
* each NotesDocument in the collection is just a number of key/value pairs, with keys for emails (probably) being stuff like "Subject", "From" etc.

Since I wasn't sure anymore whether one needs a domino server for the programming approach, I did some googleing out of curiosity and came across this:
Domingo JAVA-API

That (and don't forget to do the "installation" part first) looks like a pretty straightforward example of what I had in mind:
The "Getting Started" part I linked above is pretty much exactly doing (for you) the
* some standard call(s) to initialize API-internal stuff
* open the database (nsf)

part I didn't go into detail about.

The "FAIL" tag was a stupid idea. It's a goddamn meme. It's already stale and annoying, and has been for awhile. The Fark brass should know better than this. It is time for a new tag or two, though, I agree. Not that my opinion matters one teeny tiny bit. Maybe the tags are fine.. they just need some makeovers.

The "FAIL" tag was a stupid idea.

I don't care much for its existence, but I think it's bad that its design makes it stand out like a sore thumb (though maybe that's intended):

* most (all? I'm too lazy to look) of the tags without pictures have black as the foreground color and not as the background - except NEWS, I believe
* the font is bolder than the font used in most (all?) of the other tags, including other tags with only a few letters like HERO and SAD
* white on black makes it look like a "FUNERAL" tag; should have switched the color scheme with SAD or something
