It'll depend on what he does between now and January. Bush is still the President, so laying any executive actions at Obama's feet is just lousy journalism at best. Now how things are looking within the lauded First 100 Days will be far more interesting overall, both domestically and internationally.

What will be REALLY fun is watching Obama handle the Democrat held House and Senate. I suspect that particular honeymoon will be over even faster.

Yes. Examine Obama's relationship with the news media by referencing a book from 1984. To hell with that whole Internet thing.

The press corps works to hold the president accountable for what he does and extra hard to hold him accountable for what he does not do

Oh, they're back to taking their responsibility seriously now that their corporatist party is on its way out?

The 'media honeymoon with Obama' never existed. It was a fiction dreamed up by the McCain campaign to explain their low poll ratings.

I disagree. The press may become contentious with him eventually, there may even be a good argument that they are bound to definately be so just by nature.... but it will be a while.

The fawning over him during the election from the press was so pervasive that I just can't see that dissapearing too quickly for any reason. Good for him... I hope he makes good use of the free pass he's going to get for a while.

But I predict he'll get AT LEAST 6 - 9 months, but probably more like a year or two, of coverage which continues to be thinly disguised gushing.

I believe I've just witnessed the single, most important event in my 38 years (at least on the positive side of the spectrum). I saw a country take back the reins from a government running entirely amok. Joy was everywhere; every team won the Superbowl. We aren't going to get much more 'grassroots' than that, not in this day and age.
If you feel scorn today, that is a shame. Something amazing just happened and you missed it.

I would give it at least a month.

BergZ: The 'media honeymoon with Obama' never existed. It was a fiction dreamed up by the McCain campaign to explain their low poll ratings.

that. Well, there is the time when they broke the "McCain base" thing after the Palin meltdown. The Media could be on a "honeymoon" now, since being president elect. Thats about all I can see.

The attacks have been CNN
going on since even before he announced his candidacy inFebruary 10, 2007.

Rush limbaugh is hallucinating on the radio right now. Apparently, he feels that the Republicans didn't loose too badly last night. Obama did not win by a landslide and the democrats are hateful and spiteful and Obama is scary.

So...yeah. Rush is having an 'Alice in wonderland' kinda day. I wonder if he's back to snorting oxycotin again?

One thing I really admire about President-Elect Obama is that he seems to relish criticism. He doesn't shy away from it; in fact, he wants as much as possible in order to make himself better. This is not an insular and self-absorbed man. This is someone who constantly strives to improve.

I'm sure he will welcome a critical media, as it will only increase his ability to formulate effective policy.

The local, DC, media was stil referring to Mr Bush as 'extremely popular' into 2007. Talk about your endless honeymoon.

I thought this was a fairly interesting and well-written article. Obama's going to have to come down from the clouds sometime and get in the mud with the rest of the people who have taken the office.

I'm hoping he does well, but I won't be surprised when the media's calling for his head a year or two down the road.

The press corps works to hold the president accountable for what he does and extra hard to hold him accountable for what he does not do, a territory so vast and encompassing that foraging journalists assigned to the beat can never hunger for a story.

That's a lovely idealization and I look forward to it becoming reality.

2008-11-05 12:26:15 PM
I refuse to take seriously anyone who would pass this kind of judgment in advance. Look at the graceful way Obama handled both Hillary and McCain while being targeted from all directions. He will deal with the press. He won't be perfect and I don't think reasonable people expect that. He'll put anybody with unreasonable expectations in their place and not get distracted by wharrgarbl.

One thing is certain - the beltway insider crowd is NOT happy this morning. This was a huge shake up and I think it'll be a couple days for the wacko fundies to get over the shock of having lost so badly.

Why the hell couldn't we been having this for the past 8 years?

My wife is reading message boards where lots of conservatives post - they're talking about how Iranians rigged the election, and how all Republicans should get out because all hatred arises from the left, and that "Obama is a left-wing fascist" (my personal favorite) - someone called him "Comrade Obama".

Heh.

The "honeymoon" if it ever existed, shouldn't last long. The media should accurately relay the facts to us, if they can find any.

Rush is really wacked out today. I was listening in a few minutes ago and he was going on and on about Obama's speech last night. I heard nothing about McCain's speech, nor did I hear anything critical of the rather rude behavior of the McCainiacs in the crowd that night.

But yeah, you're right - an Obama victory is job security for el rushbo.

LOL. I know. People honestly seem to think Rush has any convictions besides making money.

I am sure he was praying for Obama to be elected.

Yeah, i'm seeing the same things from other sources. WTF? how in the hell did the rank and file republicans think this was gonna turn out!? Hello!? you crapped on the heads of the fiscal conservatives, kicked 'em in the nuts and then laughed at them. And then you are surprised when the fiscal conservatives don't vote for your guy?!

Bite me.

No, really - farking BITE me. The republicans EARNED this defeat. they worked hard for it. They learned a bitter lesson last night about the price for supporting radical fundamentalists over moderate fiscal conservatism. what they do about it remains to be seen.

No, he's not raving and ranting. he's apparently snapped though, and just created an alternate reality in his head. kinda sad really, but he's gone completely nuts and just hallucinating. it's kinda creepy too.

I've been listening to Rush and Hannity lately, because I'm a masochist. Jesus, the biatching! And so far today, Rush is going on about how people on his side who are talking about being gracious and conciliatory are wrong. Wrong about being gracious...

I distinctly remember when Clinton won in '92 and Limbaugh was talking about how the American people had spoken and that he'd seen the light, that he'd been wrong all along. It was actually good lampooning of himself. Now it's just constant biatching, moaning and whining. It would be sad if it was so deserved.

THIS

and this
I'm 65, white female, grew up in rural south, uneducated, volunteered for Obama in an area where it is very unpopular to do so. I am filled with peace today. I feel like I was a small part of something amazing: taking back our country.

Obama and the left are going to have complete run of the government for at least 2 years. What the media says won't matter.

These same rules applied to Bush for at least 6 years. He farked it up royally, and there's no one else to blame but Bush and the Republican Party. When the shoe is on the other foot, it can't just be explained away as racism. He's going to have to deliver.

yeah, apparently the message from the wacko right wing fundies is something along the lines of: 'we didn't lose, the left were the ones that are hateful liars and we didn't lose. did I mention that we didn't lose? because we didn't lose. I SAID WE DIDN'T LOSE! I just wanted to be sure we got that clear [cue nervous laughter]'.
