I thought they hadn't even counted a couple of precincts yet? And that those precincts were likely to swing Dem? No?

2008-11-05 09:39:31 AM
I so hope Franken wins. Just to see BillO Fallafel's face.

2008-11-05 09:40:59 AM
The last precincts came in with not enough votes for Franken.

If the recount is done fairly, without interference or cherry-picking, frankly we still don't know who won. Coleman obviously has a slight advantage because of his lead, but you just don't know.

On CNN they are saying there will be an automatic recount and we may not know the winner until Dec.

The final count I saw has a 700 vote difference out of about 3 million voters.

2008-11-05 09:42:20 AM
If the margin is that low, won't the absentee ballots be significant, meaning this still could go either way?

/still hoping that Franken wins

I don't like Franken but I don't live in Minnesota.

Recounts favor military, usually Republican.

Not a Coleman fan, but Franken is the posterboy for Limousine Liberal Douchenozz; he needs a cockpunch.

... and no, I won't forgive him for STUART SAVE HIS FAMILY.

They are morons. They elected Palin, after all.

Alaska looking like the biggest loser in this election.

But that's . . . okay.

2008-11-05 09:45:33 AM
Because he's good enough, smart enough, and doggone it, enough people voted for him to warrant a recount.

Well, it the two of them hadn't run such a hateful, deceitful campaign, a lot of folks wouldn't have handed Barkley the results he got, and it would likely be a different story.

Franken lost my vote with his vitriol and overt truthinesss. Which sucks, because I wanted Norm out, that wishy-washy pandering shiatbag.

With 99% of precincts reporting:

Stevens (Incumbent)
106,351
48%

Begich
102,998
47%

So AK just elected a Felon. Oh, and they have a Governor with an ethics violation.

They are the real America right?

I'm confused.

IIRC, a few days ago an important Senator said if he was elected they would expel him from the Senate. I'm kicking myself for not remembering who said that.

stebain: Aernis: meanwhile wtf happened with alaska?

Yes, but the Senate can choose to kick him out.

Personally, if I were Reid, I'd wouldn't put up a vote for his expulsion. Let him run his appeals. Let him fester. Let him stink up the joint. The people of Alaska wanted a criminal tainted Senator from the party deeply in the minority? Let them have him, and all the absolutely zero clout he brings. Let him serve as the poster boy of the GOP.

No, but by electing a Republican they prevent a Dem from taking the seat. If (when)Stevens is kicked out of office they will hold a special election which is pretty much a slam dunk for a Republican.

stebain: Aernis: meanwhile wtf happened with alaska?

Yes. He must be expelled from the Senate after hearings and vote, a fight he could hypothetically survive.

If he is ousted, a replacement senator would be appointed. Varying state to state, the appointment may be by the governor or the senator himself.

My guess is that he'll resign before being expelled so he can keep all his sweet senate retirement perks. Then a new republican would replace him in Washington. Palin's consolation prize, a springboard to a 2012 presidential run?

Wow, you know your political party has hit a new low when the absolute best you can hope for is to hold the opposing party to 59 Senate seats rather than 60. Ouch.

BillCo: If (when)Stevens is kicked out of office they will hold a special election which is pretty much a slam dunk for a Republican.

Can't say that for sure, either. Begich, being within a percentage point of winning and having no other job will be running in the special. Who can the GOP find? The problem with small state politics (having lived in the Dakotas) is that there is basically no 'bench' and no 'farm team', so we get the few politicians we have.

I guess Palin will step down to run. Probably win. (And we'd be stuck with this moron for the next 35 years). But, it's not an absolute slam dunk.

According to 538 there were just over 2 million early votes, and current totals are ~3.6 million, which seems a bit off. There were only 3.3 total in 2004 though.

stebain: Aernis: meanwhile wtf happened with alaska?

Legally, yes. However the Senate leadership has made it very clear that they intend to toss Stevens out. I would say that voting against that would be political suicide.

Alaska will need to have a special election to fill Stevens' seat. The BIG question then becomes will Sarah Palin run for it? She obviously wants to become a leader in the Republican party, and that will be very hard to do in a state as remote and small (population wise) as Alaska.

Prop 8? The Colorado prop about defining when a human is a human? Wow... If that passes, someone needs to flood the court with stupid cases involving miscarriages and manslaughter charges.
