You're kidding me right? There are a ton of resources and public records out there. Use them to educate yourself before saying something retarded. I realize that living/working in the corporate realm shields you from the military goings-on, but what you fail to realize is that there are so many programs that are in place right now to not only provide homeland defense but to support our soldiers on the ground with critical resources to carry out their jobs and to protect themselves. Like it or not, we are in a state of war and as long as we are out there, there is a need/demand for appropriate military resources. You can't give a soldier a stick and shield and expect him to stand a chance. There are more than a few antiquated (read as Vietnam/Korea leftovers)resources that our soldiers are expected to be succesful with. It is paramount that we provide adequate support to be successful.

Do you just hate humanity, or what? It's reasonable to ask that these programs be meritocratic in their selection of recipients, but are you really so vicious that you balk at the idea of spending even a dime on the insane, the disabled, those incapable of competing for a living?

Would you have them die?

No. I choose to make generous charitable donations to humanitarian organizations that actually use my hard earned money responsibly and efficiently...

Do not tell me how to spend my money on the needy. Lastly, our government is the last organization I would give my money to in order to help those that need it.

The electoral college doesn't make sense from the perspective of representative democracy. It results in overvalueing the votes of people who live in states with small populations, while undervaluing the votes of people who live in states with large populations. Contrary to memes from recent years, the electoral college was not designed to "increase representation of rural voters," nor to "give the states a larger say in the presidential election process."

Instead, it was specifically designed to act as a buffer between popular will and the office of the presidency. 18th century political elites feared that the masses were too stupid or too ignorant to make the right choices in presidential elections, or that they would be easily manipulated by demagogues. The electors in the electoral college, it was believed, would be composed of the political elites themselves. If the people made the wrong decision, the founders thought, the electors would make the right decision.

The 2000 election revealed the ultimate folly of this line of thinking. History has born out that in 2000, the people chose the objectively superior candidate. But as a result of a fluke of electoral math, the objectively inferior candidate assumed the office of the president. For the past eight years, we have paid the price for that folly. The people, for the most part, are capable of making the right decision. The electoral college should be abolished, and the president chosen by popular vote.

TigerStar: Last night and today, I feel so much hope. I feel so much pride. I feel like my one vote was a single drop of water in a great Tsunami of change. I feel like I was one of a million voices screaming in the night, "I love my country and I'm taking it back!" I'm so proud of the country that I love and have so much hope in my heart that we can together heal the wounds that have been such a source of pain and anger to us all. No more living in fear. No more living in hate. We can overcome! Yes we can!

I know Obama isn't going to fix the economy overnight. I know he won't be able to provide healthcare to all Americans by February '09. I know Obama isn't a Messiah who four years from now will have turned this country into a fabled utopia, but I also know Obama will make moral decisions. I know Obama will try to unite where others try to divide. I know Obama will help to make America the beacon of hope it once was to others. I know that at 46 years of age, I witnessed one of the most important and hopefully glorious chapters in American history.

I know hope. We can overcome! Yes we can! God bless you, God Bless Barack Obama, and may God Bless the United States of America!

This. All of it.

Kenwhat: At no other point in American history have so many uneducated and politically ignorant people voted. I like Obama and I'm glad he won, but at the end of the day he didn't win because of his policies, he won because he ran a slick marketing campaign that whipped people into a fervor as if he were releasing Halo 3 or another Lord of the Rings movie.

Carefully crafted slogans, a shiatload of money and a shiatload of people who know nothing about politics hitting the voting booth is why he won.

How is this different than any election in last century or two?

More like skid-mark on history, one that even Tide can't get out.

I'm just curious about one thing... I have no idea if Bush actually thinks about such things so deeply, but how does it feel knowing that the rest of the planet, a good 70+% of humanity itself (along with a good chunk of your your own countrymen) is this glad to see you gone? That they have been counting the days and hours until january 20th with this much glee, and that in certain quarters is name will be reviled through all time?

Does he think about this from time to time, or does he just not give a rat's ass?

18th century political elites constructed the masses as too stupid and ignorant as well. let's not forget that any "objective" appraisal of this as fact is also well-bounded by a hell of alot of perception.

if you believe in the democratic process, where the electorate, for better or worse, decides on the candidate of their choice, through either rational, critical thought or lizard-brain impulse, you have to allow people to speak with their ballots.

I see where he thinks it's a tragedy that the movement became so court focused. I read the the "community organizing and coalition of powers through which you bring about redistributive change" as talking about the political and economic issues of equal pay, equal representation, equal rights.

And again, how does Bush begging to buy shares of the banks not epitomize socialism?

Well I am glad you see it as issues of pay, representation and rights. I am not so confident in his views that I make that same assumption.

I never said that the bailout plan was a good idea. I am staunchly against it and I voted against my representative yesterday who voted for it.

Maybe they are. But is the electoral college fulfilling its function? If it were, in 2000, it would have picked the well-qualified Al Gore over the high functioning alcoholic and moron George W. Bush. By any reasonable, objective, non-ideological criteria, Gore was the superior candidate to Bush. Yet the college gave us the inferior candidate, while the people gave us the superior candidate.

Even if the basic predicate rationale for the college is true; that the people are dupes easily manipulated by demagogues, the fact is that the college isn't serving its function of keeping demagogues and weak candidates from winning. 2000 demonstrates that in at least one case, it produced exactly the opposite result.

The justification for its existence just isn't there anymore. It isn't doing its job. It should be abolished.

Kenwhat: Carefully crafted slogans, a shiatload of money and a shiatload of people who know nothing about politics hitting the voting booth is why he won.

And the swing-voters who elected Bush in 2000 didn't do so because they wanted to have a beer with him, and out of a (correct) desire to punish Clinton for perjuring himself? Do tell. I'm sure they were all ardent scholars of his future plans that "we shouldn't engage in what is called nation-building".

I keep repeating this (apologies, we makes them, Precious), but it continues to sum my up my feelings about this historic night:

I'm not normally given to an excess of emotion, but just before Obama's speech I was explaining to my son why this was so important and why he would want to remember this night when he's older, and I nearly broke down.

I have had a few moments in my lifetime I can point at as being moments when I could say I was so proud to be American my heart would nearly burst from it-

The first time I voted.
Standing on a DZ in Alabama with wings on my chest.
Getting off a plane coming home to an Army band and kisses.
Setting up a polling in a tent and standing guard over it so people could vote in Dade County, Florida after Hurricane Andrew,.
Attending an antiwar demonstration after 9/11 but before the US invaded Iraq.

And today. I'm not sure I can point to a time when I was more proud of my country than I am right now.

A Vietnam Veteran salutes you.

I'd just like to leave the butthurt conservatives with this thought:

You were wrong to vote for Bush, twice, and you were wrong to vote for McCain. The shiatty condition of our economy is your fault. The war in Iraq is your fault. The prohibition on federal funding of stem cells is your fault. The resistance to environmental measures, your fault. The fact that neither gays nor women enjoy the rights they should in this country, your fault. Faith based initiatives and the presidential approval of intelligent design in schools, your fault.

You drove this country into the farking ground over the past eight years and now you have the pig-ignorant audacity to harrass your betters for voting in a well educated, reasonable, secular candidate. You seem to hate anyone capable of improving our conditions, as if you're actively working towards the ruination of the country. If you'd had your way, we'd have another for or eight years of the same disastrous policies, yet more illegitimate war (in Iran this time) and the very real and very chilling prospect of a president Palin. That is what you would visit upon us all, and I spit on you for it. You are garbage, fark all of you, and I will enjoy the next eight years of hearing the sweet symphony of your desperate, anguished bleating.

Raharu: Perhaps its time to try a little socialism, as uncontrolled capitalism seems to have worked so well.

Two points on that:

A: Progress leans to the left. Too far and you get the USSR, sure, too little and you get the UK, and we don't want that. Just far enough and you get Scandinavia, which offers some of the highest quality of life on Earth, despite the cold and 6-month night. Ok, that's going to be too far for you, but watch this space for the next couple of hundred years, as I say, the future always bends to the left overall.

B: Obviously you're not going that far, and Obama and the Democrats might lean leftwards to your American eyes but to call this Socialism is to fundamentally misunderstand the concept. You can initiate social programs and not "be" a socialist. Some ideas and policies may be social in nature, but Socialism is an entire governmental structure and you guys are so not ready for that yet.

Take it from an ex-Socialist, Obama is not one. Really.

Zamboro:
"different"? I currently live in the south. It's a hotbed of ignorance and racism. Beautiful land, but terrible people by and large.
rynthetyn:
One of my other American coworkers here where I'm at said that she's glad she's not back in South Carolina because she can just imagine what all of the signs all over town are saying today, and it won't be pretty.

Nice to see the tolerance I am accustomed to seeing here on Fark.
Sorry to disappoint you two tolerant stalwerts of Liberalism, but as a black person living in SC- everything here is calm and peaceful and it's a beautiful day. None of the typical bigoted stereotypical views you two have of the south going on. And southern people are nice and wonderful as always. We're busy working and living. What was that you said, Zamboro? Oh yeah- Get it straight from the horses mouth rather than relying on the caricature you've set up in your mind to make it easy to hate those you disagree with.
Dumbass.

BTW-
Raharu
Perhaps its time to try a little socialism, as uncontrolled capitalism seems to have worked so well. If anything it will teach the capitalists a lessen and perhaps they will not be so greedy next time around. Because it does go around, it always does.

This is what people were saying in the 1920s- when liberals and some in the press were celebrating the figure of international change- Mussolini. The same type of fawning we've seen this election. It wasn't until well after the Italian invasion of Ethipoia
As for Liberals initial take on Hitler-
HG Wells: we need to "assist in a kind of phoenix rebirth" of Liberalism as an "enlightened Nazism." 1932 (http://jch.sagepub.com/cgi/content/abstract/35/4/541)
And all that gave us WW II. Nice.

"I hear your voices, I need your help and I will be your president too."
