I have experienced minor hyponatraemia myself. Let me tell you, it's not fun. I can't believe he didn't experience the effects of this all the time. It feels extremely disorienting (like the worse feeling you could imagine) and in my case I vomited anything I put in my mount.

Holy crap! When I was in the loony bin ( yeah I've been, I got disorders myself ) I saw an old lady that had this. She would drink water incessantly and all the inmates and staff had to watch her to make sure she didn't go to the drinlking fountain. Seriously. She would get drunk from water. It was freaky, disturbing and annoying. You had to literally pull her off the drinking fountain. Weird as heck.

If this was a legitimate condition of never ending excessive thirst it is kind of interesting. Perhaps a tumor of whatever portion of the brain that regulates thirst? Faulty negative feedback from the stomach and kidneys?

If only there were an alternative drink, one with proper electrolytic content to discourage soodium impabalance, even one that might encourage eatingof electrolyte foodstuffs, like salty pretzels or peanuts. Said drink might also reward the drinker with a mild euphoric effect, and a self regulating anaesthetic effect which would render the overindulger in a harmless stuporific sleep.

You know, and this is pure conjecture on my part, but I think they're working on that right now. I sure hope they come up with this so that this tragic event doesn't happen again.

Dead guy's brother: "Something should have been done because Andrew certainly wouldn't have known that it would have lead to death."

Oh, horseshiat! He's been addicted to water for 30 years, people go out of their ways to drag him away from water sources, they medicate him when he drinks too much, he has to sneak around and drink from sinks and garden hoses... you expect me to believe that no one ever told him that it was bad for him to drink too much water? He never once said: "Why is it a big deal? Why can't I drink water all day?"

Unless he also had some cognitive impairment, I don't believe that he never found out, over the past three decades, that too much water is dangerous. Of course he knew. His addiction just won out.

cue "anecdotal evidence" warning...

I saw a medical documentary where a 20-year-old girl developed this insatiable thirst, to the point of seizures if she went more than two hours without water. She went through college like this, until she was finally hospitalized after a major episode and they discovered her kidneys had all but shut down. The excessive water drinking was keeping her system flushed.

Actually, there are a lot of ER cases where people have poisoned themselves drinking too much water trying to flush their system to pass a drug screen.

There is a condition where a person never stops feeling hungry called Prader-Willi syndrome, where the afflicted also have mental retardation. Maybe this water thing is similar.

nytmare There is a condition where a person never stops feeling hungry called Prader-Willi syndrome, where the afflicted also have mental retardation. Maybe this water thing is similar.

That's what I was thinking, but the TFA makes no mention of this at all. If he had a cognitive impairment, you'd think the article would say something more along the lines of "developmentally delayed man killed from hyponatraemia" or "Alzheimers patient dies in bizarre hose accident". TFA article was unclear if he was in a "care facility" specifically due to his water drinking or if he was mentally handicapped. (Assuming 51 is a bit young to be in some kind of nursing home.)

Why stop him? Seriously.

I'm sure it sounds cold to most people, but I just don't see the point past a certain age. It's good to try to keep people from killing themselves, of course, but there's a limit to everything. After a while, when they know what they are doing, why keep fighting them?
