It took them 16 years to go back? Jeeze, talk about paranoid. It's not like the guy is still on the loose, or is he?

Where I grew up, West Allis Wisconsin back in the 70s, trick or treating was officially scheduled for the Saturday afternoon closest to, but before October 31st. I thought it was this way everywhere and that trick or treat in the dark on Halloween was some old 50s thing that was a relic of the past. It wasn't until I moved away from my home town that I realized we were the odd ones and almost nobody else did it this way.

A quick check on the internets shows they still do it this way.

People are idiots. Let's ban xmas cause it offends other religions and poor people that can't buy gifts. While we are at it lets ban any form of self expression cause that leads to differences and people can't cope with life.

The long cold winters do strange things to the girls in P'burg. As soon as spring comes they break out their micro-mini skirts and high heals. The city is full of them well into the summer. I have never seen so many women in ultra-short skirts in any other city.

Wow - you really didn't get out much in the Burgh, did you? There are a lot of pretty girls/women in this city, from just about every part of the city, too. What's scary is that it's getting harder and harder to tell the legal from the not-quite legal ones...and the "not-quites" are 12. *shudder*

From TFA, they banned it because an 11 year old girl was abducted and murdered 16 years ago while Trick-or-treating. Put the tinfoil away.

Yeah, I can see how that might make a place skittish about the whole thing. So lay off.

And that is why we can't have nice things. Are people allowed to go out any other night of the year that anyone was abducted and murdered?

When I was young we had trick or treating 6 to 8 (and of course this was when daylight savings was done before Halloween). Meaning it was dark pretty much the entire time.

Then when I was in 8th grade (my next to last year trick or treating) they moved it to 5 to 7.

And just last year the daylight savings moved forward a week. Now it's light almost the entire time.

Sad really.

Here in Hitler's AsscrackCanton, OH, They do trick or treat from 3-5 on the sunday before the 31st. Growing up, I can remember when they at least did it closer to dusk so it would be dark by the time you got back. It's pretty sad now.

I can't imagine trick-or-treating in the light. I remember seeing it in E.T. as a kid and thinking, what the hell are they doing out so early??

woo hoo, trick or treating tonight! taking my three year old for his first time... eight months ago, I wasn't even sure whether I could given the cancer diagnosis and all. (Yes, I did think "man, I don't know if I'll get to (event list) with my kids")

There was an abduction the other night. I move to set a curfew so no one will ever get abducted at night, and while we are at it we'll abolish all night time activities as to lower the possibility of these types of crimes.

Another Oil City area Farker checking in...I'm technically not from Oil City (live in Clarion, PA - about half an hour or so east) but I have several friends in that area, and I work in local radio, so whenever this case came to a close, it was a pretty big deal around here.

A lot of people underestimate just how hard something like this hits in small towns...the whole reason parents move to places like Oil City and surrounding towns is because they seem safer than "the big city." Whenever something like the abduction and murder of a young girl happens, it shatters the illusion of safety completely.

they up on top near Starr

I used to canoe the river from the dam to Tionesta, and i did notice a certain "flavor". Used to go to scout camp near the Gardin Well in Tidioute, rock climbed at Hearts Content.

Good times.

And that's the tradeoff. On one hand you have pretty monotonous small-town life, low wages & cost of living, and a certain redneck bumpkin holdout from the early puritans. On the other hand you have the gorgeous outdoors with top-notch hunting, world-class fishing, an endless supply of trails to hike and falls that rival those in New England.

Plus it doesn't hurt being only a few hours from either Buffalo or Pittsburgh, and half a day's drive from New York City.

Anyway, I'm convinced the Allegheny "flavor" is something you won't find anywhere else in the US. It's a nice mix of natural gas, mountain-folk and industrial waste. It's kind of beautiful in it's own way.

The girl was not abducted trick-or-treating. She was walking home from a Girl Scout Halloween party.

I'm surprised the article didn't mention the Nick Bowen rape/murder that was the week of Halloween in 1997ish.

Those are the only two murders I remember while growing up in Oil City.
